Makita MAC5200: A very well designed easy to use compressor! My shop used to run on a multi-thousand dollar Ingersoll rand 120 gallon 7 horse power 3 phase, 2 stage compressor circa 1969. We stopped using it for spray painting back in the late 1980’s so it’s been overkill for decades. It’s finally on it’s way out, and at the same time our portable Porter Cable Job Boss C3151 has died. Some of my review will directly compare the Makita MAC5200 and the PC Job Boss a...

Shopsmith Thickness Planer

Shopsmith Thickness Planer

02-29-2008 01:12 AM by bkhop | 14 comments »

Here’s my review of the Shopsmith thickness planer. I’ve had mine for about 2 years now and it is a great planer. It replaced a Delta TP305. Let’s start out with the specs – 12” x 4” capacity; 28” long bed; for HP, read #1 below. 1. The Shopsmith Thickness planer comes in two variations that are basically identical except that one is mounted on the Shopsmith Mark V and the other is a “free-standing” tool with its own stand and motor;...

Accuracy out of the box

Accuracy out of the box

I have owned a Rockwell Unisaw for 4 years now. I bought it used from the US Army. It had the original fence on it. It was a constant job to keep it aligned and semi accurate. I recently was able to purchase the Delta 36-U30 Unifence. I took only about an hour to assemble it. It was amazing after I was done to do my first test cut. I set the curser at 6” and made my cut and low and behold it came out to six inches. Coming from what I just had all I could say was WOW! With my o...

How could they even sell this?

How could they even sell this?

I was very excited to order this. A 10” Jointer/Planer for only $420? That’s a great deal! And it’s a JET! Well, when it arrived, it looked like the box had been through hell. The top and bottom flaps were opened, the stand was missing, and all the nuts, bolts and washers were scattered all over the place. I was ok with the missing stand, since I had an extra stand from an old Delta table saw I can use. I just had to make sure none of the other parts were missing....

Very surprising precision in this straightedge

Very surprising precision in this straightedge

05-16-2010 05:17 AM by Twigger | 1 comment »

I bought this before I started woodworking to do carpentry like circular sawing the full length of a piece of plywood. So when I bought a jointer, I wanted to use it to check for coplanar. But of course the precision of this inexpensive straightedge found at a big box store was very questionable. But using the technique found at http://lumberjocks.com/topics/16233I checked it out. In particular, I scribed a line using a knife blade, flipped it, and scribed a second line hoping to match ...

8” Bionic Wrench

8” Bionic Wrench

02-20-2011 03:39 PM by christopheralan | 3 comments »

This is the 8” Bionic Wrench by Logger Head Tools. It is one of the coolest tools I own. Thanks to innovative design and engineering, it automatically adjusts to any size hex-head fastener from 7/16 inch to ¾ inch and from 11mm to 20mm. This had Super Hero Belt status immediately. Being a carpenter and woodworker, I don’t normally turn wrenches, except to change blades and occasionally to secure lag bolts and screws. It is ideal for me in those situations where I normally have enough cle...

Using a Mad-Dro Mitre Slot Base to Align Your Table Saw

Product Description: MAG-DRO’s mitre slot base is a device used to fix calipers easily in a 3/4” slot, the base can be clamped or screwed to any flat surface for quick, accurate measurements or adjustments to table saws, planers, and router tables. Great idea - does not execute well

Great idea - does not execute well

(note: In response to some of the comments…. I do realize that for some these will work quite well. I too have seen reviews of items I was very pleased with though the reviewer was not. For those of you who these work well for, I would love for you to demonstrate because I really hoped they would work. I appreciate your positive findings. I also want to be clear that I in no way am dissing Rockler. I continue to buy many things from them. My decision not to return them had nothing...

Better Pegboard hooks

Better Pegboard hooks

09-16-2012 06:07 PM by Grumpymike | 6 comments »

Have you ever pulled a tool off of your pegboard and had the wire hanger go rattling down to the bench or even worse behind the bench to the floor … Grrrr …. Talon Hooks has a product that I tried and after using them I bought more to fill up my new storage cabinet. These little sleepers have been hiding for a while; I discovered them on the internet while searching for a better way to hang my tools. These hooks are designed for 1/4” pegboard, they secure on the board with a n...

Veritas Low-Angle Jack disappointment :(

Veritas Low-Angle Jack disappointment :(

01-31-2013 01:22 AM by Willeh | 54 comments »

I’ve been looking for a new jack plane to replace the turn of the century Stanley 5 1/2 that i’ve been working with for a long while (For sale btw, if anyone is interested).. Finally decided on the Veritas Low Angle Jack.. Basically the options were the LN 62, the Veritas Low-angle jack, a LN #5 or a wood river #5. I didn’t love the price of the LN #5 and, while i’m happy with my other wood river, I wanted to try one of the low-angle jacks since so many people rave ...
