Great Stile and Rail Set - Made in USA

Great Stile and Rail Set - Made in USA

01-01-2014 11:38 PM by mcase | 5 comments »

I recently went through a real nightmare with Freud’s new stile and rail cutters. Since I stupidly trusted Freud I did not use the set until I needed it for an order for cabinets. Unfortunately It was too late to return their junk so I had to eat the cost of their useless product. I replaced their garbage with a set of American-Made cutters from Eagle America. What a world of difference! – Smooth cutting and perfectly mating. It feels good buying American products and h...

Makita 18v 3pc combo kit

Makita 18v 3pc combo kit

03-14-2015 01:36 AM by Hooligan | 10 comments »

I recently decided to purchase a new driver/impact for the shop and went with the Makita kit. I was reluctant after reading a lot about the battery life being short, but after thinking about the speed of recharge and the light weight nature of the tools decided that since I am just a hobbyist I could deal with the down time between charges. I placed the batteries on the charger today for the first time to find that neither would take a charge! Sure it felt like a bonus that they included the ...

Great cutting bits

Great cutting bits

06-20-2015 07:48 PM by DKV | 9 comments »

I bought this set of drill bits because I was always needing a bit a tad larger or smaller than the bit I had available. This is a set from 1/16 to 1/2 inches by 1/64th. It’s the “by 1/64th” that I bought the set. Now I can easily go a tad bigger or smaller. The bits cut very clean holes entry and exit but all new bits probably do. The real test comes after a year or so of use. These bits get 4 stars until I see them holding their edge after a year’s use.

Triton TTS1400 Track saw

Triton TTS1400 Track saw

Just to put this review into perspective I’d like to say that I’ve used it to break down 5 sheets of plywood and trim two door. This is not a comprehensive review just some thoughts to share. My 32 year old skillsaw has finally given up. It spent many years cutting through 2x lumber and plywood/osb. For the past 5 years I was just using to break down plywood to more manageable pieces. I’ve really looked hard at the Festool but I have a difficult time justifying the cost. I’m a hobbyist. ...

ROCKLER - DRILL PRESS FENCE KIT - ITEM #53648

ROCKLER - DRILL PRESS FENCE KIT - ITEM #53648

This was an impulse buy because I didn’t really need to replace the fence I made with the table top. But I knew that this would be a good upgrade. Instantly I am impressed with this. The anodized aluminum fence is perfectly square. My shop vac hose is a snug fit onto the dust port, and I do like the sliding fences (features that my old one didn’t have). This fence fit on my existing table without any modifying. It’s a bit pricey, but worth it for me as this is an u...

Not just a pen lathe

Not just a pen lathe

11-24-2015 01:57 AM by Woodmaster1 | 1 comment »

I purchased this lathe at Johnson’s lumber wood expo in Sept. I can’t tell you how much needed to be assembled as I got the last one and it was the show model. I just completed turning a segmented bowl and it worked great. It did slow down if I got too aggressive but as long as watched that no problems. So far I have turned several Christmas ornaments, 3 lidded bowls, and two segmented bowls. The lathe has performed great. I added the bed extension and the fit was ok but needed to...

Making Good Box Joints Easily and Repeatable

Making Good Box Joints Easily and Repeatable

02-09-2016 07:16 PM by Kelly | 1 comment »

I’ve been woodworking, both professionally and as a hobbyist, since 1974. Over those years, my appreciation of the value of jigs has continued to increase. For example, using a circle cutting jig on my band saw allowed me to cut precision circles ranging from a couple inches to three feet in diameter. Box joints, or finger joints, make for strong joints and can add aesthetic value to a project. Laying out multiple box joints, individually cutting them and getting good, tight joints t...

A Great New Addition To My Shop

A Great New Addition To My Shop

Manufacturer: Grizzly Industrial, Inc.Model: Grizzly G0513P – 17” 2 HP Bandsaw, Polar Bear SeriesModel: Shop Fox G7314Z – Heavy-Duty Mobile BaseCost: $895 and $74.95 Overview First a note about this “review”. This is more of an informational post, not so much of a review as I have not owned a bandsaw before, and therefore have nothing to compare it to. Having a bandsaw in the shop opens a completely new avenue of possibilities in the way wood is cut: ev...

 Woodpeckers OneTIME Tool® - One Piece T-Square: TS-3

Woodpeckers OneTIME Tool® - One Piece T-Square: TS-3

08-18-2016 05:43 PM by cmmyakman | 2 comments »

I have three favorite tools in my shop and the TS-3 is one of them. The other two favorite tools are an after market glue container (FastCap Glu-Bot Glue Bottle (16 Ounces) available on Amazon) and my Saw Stop table saw. Woodpeckers is one of my favorite tool suppliers. I really enjoy their squares, triangles and the table saw set-up gauge (http://www.woodpeck.com/sawgauge.html). I also have a router lift (Sidewinder) that Woodpecker doesn’t make anymore (it has a crank on the side)...
