Great plane, great customer service, surprisingly bad quality control

Great plane, great customer service, surprisingly bad quality control

Let me start off by saying this is the best plane I’ve ever used. I can run it any direction with or against the grain and leave a mirror-smooth surface, taking translucent shavings. The reason I docked a star is Lie-Nielsen’s quality control isn’t very good. When I first received the plane (ordered brand new off their website), there were several problems: - The chipbreaker’s leading edge didn’t contact the blade, it was ground wrong. This means small sha...

Wow, what a way to join wood!

Wow, what a way to join wood!

This is a fantastic way to join wood. It works well with little instruction. This method al,ost will eliminate the need for clamps, as the screw pulls the two pieces of wood togerther for drying! There are FEW downsides. One is the cost of the jig, but with the time saved over biscuits or dowels, that is a moot point! Another is that the directions state that the drill should spin at least 2000 RPMs to protect the bit. This elimininates many cordless drills, even though their demonstr...

Hitachi 10in 40t ATB, good deal at about $25

Hitachi 10in 40t ATB, good deal at about $25

I have been using cheap and hand-me-down blades ever since I got my first tablesaw a couple years ago. Sawing has always been loud. Smoke and dust always looming in the near future for anything thicker than 1/2”. I hadn’t been too pleased with my last purchase. Go figure $10 is not going to cut too well. So I was in Lowe’s the other day. I had a $10 coupon that required me to get my total up to $50 to use. I was drawn over to the saw blades by the Ice finish on the ...

Stiletto 14 Oz. Hammer Overview Isn’t a hammer just a hammer? Well, yes it is, but as you know there are different types of hammers such a claw hammer, framing hammer, brick laying hammer and more. For this review we are going to cover the Stiletto Framing hammer. The Stiletto is one of our favorite hammers around. Jet bandsaw motor replacement

Jet bandsaw motor replacement

1356 days ago by kayakguy | 11 comments »

This is not so much a review of my bandsaw, as a discussion of issues I had with the motor, and the struggle I went through replacing it. I had origionally posted this under ‘projects’, but some folks had suggested it really belonged under ‘reviews’. So here it is. While re-sawing some 10” wide Walnut boards, I managed to blow out the motor on my bandsaw. The local repair shop could not fix it (they claimed it was a cheap motor, and not repairable). Jet wanted almos...

Good jig but not perfect

Good jig but not perfect

I was recently at my local Woodcraft and they only had a display model so I was reluctant to buy but i went ahead and bit the bullet and bought it anyways. The price was $399 which was $50 less and I didnt have to pay for shipping or wait for it to come in the mail. So after making sure they had all the parts that came with it which they did I went ahead and bought it. I got it home and had to do some adjusting to get it to fit my router (Ridgid plunge) which was easy enough. The only thing a...

Moisture meter

Moisture meter

Went into a newly opened Harbor Freight store in Florida and while cruising around I came across the Pittsburgh Digital Mini Moisture Meter (item67143). Wasn’t looking for one but when I saw this and the price I figured what the heck…go for it.I’m glad I did because it really works and now I won’t touch a piece of wood for turning until I check the content first. I was actually quite surprised at how high the moisture was in some of my wood. Having read the comparat...
