Does. Not. Work.

I bought this at Home Depot, and out of the box, it just didn’t plane boards. Now I’m not expecting Veritas quality for $35. But I’m not complaining here that the tool might have worked a little better, or been a little easier to use. Let’s set the bar low. Let’s assume that I have a Douglas Fir 2×4 and I get splinters in my hands from handling it, but I want to build a ladder out of it and not get splinters in my hands every time I climb the ladder, s...

Variety, Tips, Inspiration

Variety, Tips, Inspiration

(photo from www.canadianwoodworking.com) I always look forward to receiving my next issue of the Canadian Woodworking magazine. Each issue is filled with: several projects to complete, lots of tips skill building variety of furniture building, carving, and other woodworking techniques I think that that is my best part, that they mix the types of woodworking and do not just focus on furniture building. They also, in my opinion, cater to the skilled woodworker as well as the...

Tool of last Resort

Tool of last Resort

03-02-2009 01:36 AM by littlecope | 3 comments »

What’s so special about a saw? I was moved to write this last week when i had occasion to use this baby again, my “tool of last resort”. I wanted to change the orientation of tenons on my current project and was dreaming up all of these sophisticated set-ups, involving V-blocks and clamps, when it occurred to me to just cut the things using this saw! And, as always when I use it, I wonder why this tool isn’t on my front line of attack. It cuts like a dream! When I boug...

powerful and heavy duty

powerful and heavy duty

This tool is heavy duty in every aspect. It cuts hardwoods like butter. I like the basic nature of the tool, no lasers etc. They often obscure the sight line by getting in the way, and I would rather clearly see myself than rely on a laser. It base plate is aluminum, but is heavy enough it doesnt flex and I’m sure it helps keep the weight down. The adjustments are straight foreward and are easily operated. The motor sounds smooth in it’s wind up and use. The cord is nice and long,...

Powermatic 54A 6” Jointer

Powermatic 54A 6” Jointer

01-07-2010 10:35 PM by PeteMoss | 11 comments »

Jointer Overview: I decided to purchase a jointer for my home workshop. I did a LOT of online research and talked to as many local folks as I could trying to make sure I made the best purchase. I considered the value of Gizzly, the somewhat less expensive Jet models available, looked for quality OLD jointers to restore, plus a dozen more possibilities. I wanted an 8” model but couldn’t quite swing it. In the end it came down to a four-day 15% off sale on Jet and Powermatic at my local Wood...

Poor quality and even worse costomer service

Poor quality and even worse costomer service

Got this unit home and uncrated after it took 3 weeks to get from Laguna. When I ordered it the unit was on the floor ready to ship and when it was all said and done it hadn’t cleared customs yet. First thing that I noticed is that the plug on the end of the power cord was only rated for 15 amps. This unit has a 4hp motor so I thought that was underrated. It didn’t matter to me though I had already planned to cut the end off and put one on that matched my set-up with locking plugs. It ...

Reluctantly joined the Sawstop Club

Reluctantly joined the Sawstop Club

06-12-2011 07:26 PM by Manitario | 35 comments »

So I bought a Sawstop. I was perfectly happy with my General International granite topped TS, but I have been increasingly concerned about my safety when using it. Namely, I’m an ER doctor, and need my fingers or most of them at least. I debated for a long time about this saw, and whether a) if I needed it (as I already am a very safe and careful TS user…most days) and b) if it really would help prevent a serious injury. In answer to “a”: I realized that as careful as I am using the TS, ...

Accu-Link Adjustable Link V-Belts (from Harbor Frei

Accu-Link Adjustable Link V-Belts (from Harbor Frei

10-18-2011 02:13 AM by David Grimes | 19 comments »

There are at least two common brands of link belts on the market: PowerTwist belts, manufactured by Fenner Drives, are red. Accu-Link belts, from Jason Industrial, are green. The Harbor Freight belts are the green Accu-links and the subject of this review. The regular price is $24.99 for a five foot piece ($5 per foot). I have the pleasure of being a Ridgid BS14002 bandsaw owner. Luckily, mine did not have the vibration issues that others have experienced. However, there was some mino...

First Impression Review

First Impression Review

03-08-2012 07:01 AM by Mike | 10 comments »

Here is my first blush review after less than 5 hours of use: ====================== the Good - Out of the box, the blade was dead nuts on. I did not have the problem that others have had with the blade becoming off angled at full height. Assembly was actually really easy once I looked at the parts and the instructions closely on “difficult” sections. I feel that if you need this kind of table saw and have problems assembling it, you really aren’t reading the ins...

Set of four Eng Squares

Set of four Eng Squares

01-15-2013 05:24 AM by Ken90712 | 15 comments »

One of Blondie’s Christmas presents to me was this awesome set of squares. They are an extremely accurate set of squares that are particularly valuable when I’m setting up my power tools. It is boxed set of four Engineer’s Squares. There made by the engineering firm in India. They come a in a So/So box, however the box is not what I was interested in so I couldn’t take a star for that. They come wrapped in plastic with oil applied. There on sale and I’m not sure you...
