Not just a pen lathe

Not just a pen lathe

I purchased this lathe at Johnson’s lumber wood expo in Sept. I can’t tell you how much needed to be assembled as I got the last one and it was the show model. I just completed turning a segmented bowl and it worked great. It did slow down if I got too aggressive but as long as watched that no problems. So far I have turned several Christmas ornaments, 3 lidded bowls, and two segmented bowls. The lathe has performed great. I added the bed extension and the fit was ok but needed to...

Making Good Box Joints Easily and Repeatable

Making Good Box Joints Easily and Repeatable

02-09-2016 07:16 PM by Kelly | 1 comment »

I’ve been woodworking, both professionally and as a hobbyist, since 1974. Over those years, my appreciation of the value of jigs has continued to increase. For example, using a circle cutting jig on my band saw allowed me to cut precision circles ranging from a couple inches to three feet in diameter. Box joints, or finger joints, make for strong joints and can add aesthetic value to a project. Laying out multiple box joints, individually cutting them and getting good, tight joints t...

A Great New Addition To My Shop

A Great New Addition To My Shop

Manufacturer: Grizzly Industrial, Inc.Model: Grizzly G0513P – 17” 2 HP Bandsaw, Polar Bear SeriesModel: Shop Fox G7314Z – Heavy-Duty Mobile BaseCost: $895 and $74.95 Overview First a note about this “review”. This is more of an informational post, not so much of a review as I have not owned a bandsaw before, and therefore have nothing to compare it to. Having a bandsaw in the shop opens a completely new avenue of possibilities in the way wood is cut: ev...

 Woodpeckers OneTIME Tool® - One Piece T-Square: TS-3

Woodpeckers OneTIME Tool® - One Piece T-Square: TS-3

I have three favorite tools in my shop and the TS-3 is one of them. The other two favorite tools are an after market glue container (FastCap Glu-Bot Glue Bottle (16 Ounces) available on Amazon) and my Saw Stop table saw. Woodpeckers is one of my favorite tool suppliers. I really enjoy their squares, triangles and the table saw set-up gauge (http://www.woodpeck.com/sawgauge.html). I also have a router lift (Sidewinder) that Woodpecker doesn’t make anymore (it has a crank on the side)...

Great content, easily sidetracked

I thought I would review some woodworking (and related) podcasts. I often prefer podcasts over music while in the shop or on drives. Previously I reviewed the 360 Woodworking podcast. Shop Talk Live is a twice monthly, 1 hour, podcast by Fine Woodworking’s Tom McKenna, Mike Pekovich, Matt Kenney (It seems they switch this up once in awhile). Mostly they answer listener questions but also have guests and talk about the magazine and woodworking trade shows. I’ve been a listener s...

SawStop customer service fail

SawStop customer service fail

02-23-2017 04:24 PM by leftcoaster | 59 comments »

I bought a sawstop PCS 3hp last week. Today I received a flyer saying that they’re giving away the over arm dust collection or mobile base for purchases after march 1. I called sawstop to see if they would exhibit some flexibility on the promotion since it’s an expensive item and a difference of only two weeks. I just finished setting it up and haven’t made a single cut yet. ???? For a company tha touts its customer support awesomeness, this seems like a silly place...

Great Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

Great Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

04-11-2017 06:27 PM by CharlesA | 10 comments »

I listen to lots of podcasts, and I especially like to listen to them while I woodwork. These 3M Worktunes headphones are just what the doctor ordered. As hearing protection they work well: block out the sound and are quite comfortable. Add to that the ability to listen to FM/AM/Aux/Bluetooth. I use the radio a bit. It is pretty basic, a manual tuning wheel—works adequately. I haven’t used the auxiliary cable hookup. Where they shine is the bluetooth capability. I find podcast...

All-in-one cleaning kit makes it simple.

All-in-one cleaning kit makes it simple.

This kit is really convenient. Sure you could gather all the pieces separately, but it’s nice to have them all together. The basin for the saw blades is really nice. You don’t have to worry about finding a shallow cookie sheet that might be used for food (and potentially getting someone mad at you). Just mix one part of the cleaner to 3 parts water and let your blade or router bit soak. After five minutes or so, use the included brush to scrub off the pitch and resin. Voila! Clean...
