The rasps that do what I always assumed rasps should do

After trying almost every kind of file I can locally source here (mostly metal files, but also some Bacho and Nicolson) and being very disappointed with the results i got, I ordered these from toolsfromjapan.com. These files are different. very different. instead of having solid steel “blade” with sharp bits punched or machined on it, they look like a lacework of razor sharp saw blades. because of the openings between the blades, they will not clog, even on the most difficult t...

Learning French Marquetry

Learning French Marquetry

06-25-2014 06:09 PM by RogerBean | 11 comments »

I’ve been off-line for the past two weeks, so my LJ activity went completely dark. But I’ve now returned from two delightful weeks at the American School of French Marquetry. I wanted to up my box game a bit, and thought some study with two extremely talented and accomplished craftsmen would be one way to do it. I also owe Paul Miller (shipwright) for his encouragement to attend. There have been a number of blogs and posts about the ASFM school, so I won’t attempt to repeat what’s ...

Incra - A great router fence

Incra - A great router fence

I purchased this after seeing it at the Woodworkers show in Dallas this year. I didn’t get it at the show becausewoodpeckers had it cheaper and free shipping. (Saved $80) I have been looking at it for a while, but thought what’s the big deal, my fence works just fine. Then atthe show I saw some features that I liked. Now, like at all shows they have nice slick demos that they doto make their product look simple and easy. Well, for the most part it is simple and easy. The sys...

Replaced 1 1/2hp Jet with 2 hp HF

Replaced 1 1/2hp Jet with 2 hp HF

I am very pleased with the 2hp HF. I caught it on sale for $151.99. I could not be any happier with the big difference in suction power. This was well worth the price. Knowing what I know now, the jet unit was a waste of my time and money. This unit is twice as good! God bless

$40 For a tape measure?? Absolutely!

$40 For a tape measure?? Absolutely!

01-29-2013 06:38 PM by lumberjoe | 37 comments »

I saw this at a booth at the New England Woodworking show a few weekends ago. At first it seemed like just another gimmick, but I noticed the company is local to me. I am always one to give local businesses a shot, so I asked for some more information. What I found out was this is not a gimmick. I would go as far to say this is a must have. You are probably thinking ”A tape measure is a tape measure, what makes this one $40?”. Well, let me answer that for you. Before I get into...

Rhynosoft pads have been mentioned/rated before & thanks again to Charles Neil for mentioning them in one of his videos. I’m finishing my 1st box & ordered some of these pads in various grits. Used the 320 for the arm-r-seal fiinsh. Pads are great to work with, tore one sheet in half & still has plenty of life left. Pads don’t crinkle like paper backed. Conforms nicely to the piece. $10.75/box of 20 pads 4 1/2×5 1/2. Grits available from 180 to 1200Web site is www...

Wixey WR 550 - Excellent addition to an old 15" Planer

Wixey WR 550 - Excellent addition to an old 15" Planer

11-17-2011 04:24 AM by jwisbey | 5 comments »

I recently installed a Wixey WR 550 digital readout to a 20 year old Bridgewood BW15P 15” planer. I purchased it from Amazon for $79 dollars. The contents were well packed in the box. The reason I purchased this readout was due to the various options for installation on a machine. With my planer being so old, I wasn’t sure if I could find a digital readout for it. The installation took about 20 minutes, with most of the time determining where the best place to install it wa...

Small Cheap Chinese Laser

Small Cheap Chinese Laser

05-20-2016 08:21 PM by RootandBranch | 9 comments »

Gave this 4 stars since it’s almost exactly what I expected going in. Cheap, small scale and does a decent job so far for what it is. Playing with a laser. What could possibly go wrong? This gizmo is a mini 500mW engraver. Blue and purple beam, proprietary drag and drop software, 2 axis movement with a burn area of about one and a half inches square. It’s small but scaling up in laser capability increases the cost by a bunch. When you get up to Death Star wattage; well then, you ...

Etekcity 3 Pack Wireless Controlled Outlet socket with remote

I bought these in Jan 2013 and so far everything has worked better than I anticipated. Originally, I bought a single unit but it worked so well that I ordered the three pack. The first one is hooked up to the shop vac/Dust Deputy. The second one is connected to a box fan/filter combo. The third one is connected to my 2hp Harbor Freight Dust collector! :-) I have started/stopped the DC at least 20 times so far. I have had no issues with the remote starting or stopping any of the three mac...
