4" x 30" V-Drum Sander kit....Build your own Drum Sander!

4" x 30" V-Drum Sander kit....Build your own Drum Sander!

I saw this link via the wood whisperer website. This company, Stockroom Supply (www.stockroomsupply.com) sells the parts to built a face sanding drum sander. Granted its not the full blown thickness sander, but this method suits my needs better. I teach high school woodshop and I would not feel comfortable letting kids run a thickness sander, but this is a machine that is nearly idiot-proof once it is assembled. It doesn’t squeeze the wood between two drums, it instead mounts just u...

Good Quality Jointer/Planer Blades

Good Quality Jointer/Planer Blades

120 days ago by tenontim | 7 comments »

I use my planer and jointer constantly and I try to keep a sharp set of blades in each one. A couple of years ago I found Global Tooling, http://globaltooling.bizhosting.com/index.html on the internet, and couldn’t believe the prices they got for their blades. I thought that even if they were just throw aways, it would be worth the test run. “Knives are made from T1-High Speed Steel (18% Tungsten steel), 63 Rc hardened and finish ground to super sharp edge. Also offered Carbide ...

My First New Tool For New Shop - What is it?

My First New Tool For New Shop - What is it?

I bought a solid oak cabinet at the prison industries auction 2 years ago. I brought it home and hung it in the garage. I am starting to clean out the garage where my new shop is going to go. I was taking the screws out of a brace on the bottom of the cabinet. While holding on to a 2 X 4 fastened on the side of the cabinet, it felt like it moved. I got to looking and this is what I found. It is a Prison Shank!!!!! You figure out what it could layout.

Pesky Little Brass Screws and such

Pesky Little Brass Screws and such

Because of a recent post by Betsy I decided to post this review.Auger gimlets are small hand drills that closely match screw sizes and are handy for pre-drilling holes for Little brass screws. I also use them for drilling small holes in small pieces when making toys.I listed them as Lee Valley but they are available elsewhere as they are not made by Lee Valley.I’ve had mine for over 20 years and the smallest is showing some wear, so I would say they are a good investment

Evapo Rust - Awesome Awesome Awesome

Evapo Rust - Awesome Awesome Awesome

I posted up a project about refinishing an old plane and Mark Mazzo refered to a product on his sites blog for removing rust. In my best Hank Hill voice…I tell you what. This stuff just works! I had to let it soak for a couple of days but man, all I had to do was rinse off the pieces then lightly use a stainless still brush to remove the remaining paint. I have used navel jelly, wire wheels, WD 40. They all pale greatly in comparison. If you have something small that is heavily rusted a...

Great DVD on the Jointer and Planer

Great DVD on the Jointer and Planer

165 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 6 comments »

I heard about this DVD over at Matt's Basement Workshop. I hadn’t hear of Hendrik Varju before that, but I’m glad I know about him now. His DVD on the power Jointer and Planer is one the best woodworking DVDs I’ve watched. It covers all of the techniques you need, to get the most out of your Jointer and Planer. If you are new to using these machines, I highly recommend this DVD. I wish I had had it when I first bought my Jointer and Planer. Many of the mistakes I made ...

I’m really sort of an old tools kind of guy, and therefore I’m never very enthusiastic when the time comes to use a poly finish. As a matter of fact, I lurk on another list where we refer to this stuff polyurinate. I’ll use shellac or French Polish in a heartbeat. Now, I’ve used the Minwax poly by the gallon for past projects, and I first picked up a quart of the Minwax water based poly from the big blue bigbox store in order to finish out a client’s library t...

Charles Neil’s Finishing A – Z Beyond the Books is a DVD set that EVERY woodworker should have. it is packed with i think about 15 hours of finishing on 10 DVD’s and it is so thorough. the two whole DVDs are just on preparing for the finish and sanding and i thought that there wasn’t much to know about sanding and preparing to finish but after Charles goes through it i just thought wow. even on preparing for a finish i learned a lot. then there are three DVDs on ...

STANLEY BOSTICH - CAP2060P CONTRACTOR COMPRES. W/ 23 GAUGE PIN NAILER

I blogged about this when it arrived by UPS, but have not had the chance to use it until now due to medical reasons. Luckily lately I’ve been able to do a little something in the shop and had the privilege to use my new Stanley Bostich Compressor. It is everything that Gary Blanchette said it would be and more. I can’t say enough about this man and his public relation’s skills, but he delivered on every promise he made, and that is exceptional in this day and age. I e-mailed...

Great storage solution.

74 days ago by GaryK | 24 comments »

Looking for someplace out of the way to store all your screws/small hardware? Want to keep the dust out? Well, here is a great solution. They are made by a company called Stack-On. Here you will find their website. They come with 12 compartments with a lid that protects the contents keeping the dust out. The lidsslide back in a little to keep them open as you can see in the second picture. They can also snap shut whenclosed. They can either stand alone or be hung on the wall. I at...
