Close to true cyclone performance on a budget.
55 days ago by dbhost | 19 comments »
I have been getting a few questions about the Thien Cyclones I have been building, and figured I would write a quick review of them, and try to answer the questions I see about them.. For starters a Thien Cyclone Separator is NOT a true cyclone, but does operate in a psuedo cycloninc fashion. Meaning the incoming air stream spins around the outside of the vessel / dust bin and drops its load of dust, and larger particles in much the same way as nearly all the other separator lids do. The B...
First Dovetails Ever. Easy as Pie with the Akeda BC24 Dovetail Jig
119 days ago by thiel | 17 comments »
First, Some BackgroundThere’s one thing I should clarify so you’ll put this jig in the proper perspective: I’ve never made a dovetail. Not by hand, not by machine. I’ve never even seen a dovetail jig used (except on New Yankee Workshop). To be perfectly honest, I didn’t (until this morning) know the difference between a pin and a tail. That being said, I have aspirations of building fine furniture of my own design some day. And with those aspirations in mind, I try to make each tool p...
4" x 30" V-Drum Sander kit....Build your own Drum Sander!
635 days ago by JonH | 13 comments »
I saw this link via the wood whisperer website. This company, Stockroom Supply (www.stockroomsupply.com) sells the parts to built a face sanding drum sander. Granted its not the full blown thickness sander, but this method suits my needs better. I teach high school woodshop and I would not feel comfortable letting kids run a thickness sander, but this is a machine that is nearly idiot-proof once it is assembled. It doesn’t squeeze the wood between two drums, it instead mounts just u...
A great accessory for your router
178 days ago by GaryK | 28 comments »
Using either one of two wrenches for replace a router bit can be a real pain. Especially if it’s in a router table. This nifty little thing will allow you to replace your router with an allen wrench. This “Eliminator RC Quick Change Chuck” is a combination bit extension and one-tool chuck.Unlike other extensions, it replaces the nut and collet on your router thus minimizing run-out which can occur with some extensions. I hesitated getting one of these things for a l...
Good Quality Jointer/Planer Blades
610 days ago by tenontim | 8 comments »
I use my planer and jointer constantly and I try to keep a sharp set of blades in each one. A couple of years ago I found Global Tooling, http://globaltooling.bizhosting.com/index.html on the internet, and couldn’t believe the prices they got for their blades. I thought that even if they were just throw aways, it would be worth the test run. “Knives are made from T1-High Speed Steel (18% Tungsten steel), 63 Rc hardened and finish ground to super sharp edge. Also offered Carbide ...
OUTSTANDLY Comfortable "Protective Listening"
236 days ago by CessnaPilotBarry | 9 comments »
Blockade Ear Buds! Folks who use Work Tunes protective earmuffs, or the various clones, know how enjoyable listening to music or a podcast can be while working. I like my Work Tunes enough to have replaced them several times as I’ve broken them. Nowadays, I NEVER listen to the radio. My IPod, with over 1000 songs, and 50-100 hours of podcasts on a typical day, has completely replaced radio in my life. Like TiVO has changed my TV viewing, my IPod has made listening to the radio...
Earlex Spray Station 5000
590 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 44 comments »
To sum up, I thought the Earlex did a darn good job spraying pretty much everything I put in it, including oil-based poly, water-based finishes, lacquer, and latex paint. I would probably recommend purchasing some of the smaller tip sets though, since they will increase performance on the water-based stuff. The 5000 does lack some of the spray controls typically found in higher-priced 3 and 4-stage units, but sometimes those extra features are just unnecessary. I found the simplicity of the u...
Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood for Jig Building and General Use
27 days ago by Jerry | 27 comments »
As an alternative to the less than ideal MDF, a cabinetmaker friend of mine recently turned me onto “MDO”, aka “Signboard”. It is made up of phenolic resin coated paper laminated between layers of ply (11 layers of wood in 3/4”) and twice again as many of the phenolic- resin impregnated paper. Its what roadsigns are made of, its waterproof, flat , flat, flat and did I mention waterproof? You wont find it in Home Depot or Lowes, I have looked. I have had success at many of the local lumbery...
Heating the shop
215 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 22 comments »
Summer is arriving. But, winter will be back. If you live in a cool climate I’d like to share my experiences with shop heat with you. I see a lot of people in blogs who say that they’d like to work but it’s too cold or they just have to wait for warmer weather. I found my cold weather answer. Not a tool but an important shop item just the same. I’ve been in my shop 2-4 days a week this winter. The winter has been cold in maine. Last year when I was renovating I deci...
Review of ClearVue 1800LH
289 days ago by Padre | 38 comments »
I purchased a ClearVue cyclone 1800LH for my shop about two months ago. Had torn muscles in my shoulder, so put it up a month ago, had shoulder surgery, and finally got it wired and turned on for the first time today. First Impressions: The unit came complete, packaged extremely well. Everything labeled, wrapped, boxed, re-wrapped. I unpacked everything and nothing was dented, broken, scratched or otherwise in any condition but brand new. The system also came with a remote control and...
