Big Bang For Buck Belt Sharpener

Big Bang For Buck Belt Sharpener

I had been toying with the idea of getting into Woodturning for some time and the opportunity presented itself, so I started some serious planning. One of the things that goes along with Woodturning is the ability to sharpen your own turning tools. At the time I did NOT own a mechanized sharpening machine/system and had to rely on manually sharpening all of my planes and chisels with the “Scary Sharp” sandpaper to stone methodology. Don’t get me wrong, that system works a...

The Full Potential of the R4512

The Full Potential of the R4512

I have an R4512 with a MLCS cast-iron router table extension, Incra 32” TS-LS fence system, Incra 1000HD miter guage and 48 tooth WWII blade. I love this saw and have no complaints other than being underpowered at times. However, once everything is properly calibrated I would argue that this setup could perform as well as any comparable duty saws and it has made me very happy to own. The MLCS cast-iron extension bolted up easily with the supplied hardware. The middle bolt was tric...

These Clamps Are Terrible

These Clamps Are Terrible

12-09-2014 02:59 PM by Patrick | 40 comments »

It’s right there in the picture. The clamping pads are not parallel. The tops are touching and the bottoms have a gap. I got these the other day and they simply don’t work. You can’t get even clamping pressure with pads that are out of whack like this. I mean it’s in the picture that they have posted on Amazon. Ahhh. I have Dewalt quick clamps like these and they are awesome. I also have Irwin F style clamps that are awesome. What happened to these?

My new saw

My new saw

03-19-2010 05:03 AM by Tony | 40 comments »

Although I used industrial grade bandsaws in Jr and Sr High Shop Class, the only bandsaw I’ve owned is a Craftsman 10” bench top model. I’ve had it about 20 years, and it has been used for many model airplane and craft projects, but I’ve never been able to get it to cut anything over 1/4” reliably. I’ve been hoping to find a used 14” bandsaw around here, but they are scarce, or I’ve just been looking in the wrong place. I’ve done a lot of ...

A Satisfied SawStop User

A Satisfied SawStop User

Like a lot of woodworkers, buying a cabinet saw was a big commitment for me. It wasn’t just a big financial decision; I also wanted to be sure I was going to have enough time between kids, a career, and other stuff that I’d feel like I really got my money’s worth out of it. My Ridgid contractor’s saw was doing a nice job for me already. But I like to make cabinets and, at the end of the day, it’s just not convenient to break down a 4×8 sheet of plywood wi...

Harbor Freight Dado set

Harbor Freight Dado set

12-16-2013 06:48 PM by MrRon | 40 comments »

I’m certain the purists will condemn me for using the name “Harbor Freight” in connection with woodworking tools, but like it or not, here it is. I don’t use a dado blade very often, so I couldn’t justify $200+ sets like those from Forrest. But when I do need one, I went with the cheapest set I could find. The HF set is 8” and cuts dados up to 7/8”. The teeth are C2 carbide and number 22 teeth. I was impressed by the size of the carbide. They look lik...

(photo from: www.ridgid.com) When we first were looking for tools for our shop Rick wanted a drum sander. We asked at a store and were shown this Ridgid model which is multi-purposed. Rick was sold and we’ve never regretted the purchase. Features: belt sander (4”) spindle sander (5 sizes) tilting table Conversion Switching between the belt sander and spindle sander is really easy. It is also simple to change the sleeves for the spindle sander. Everything...
