Quick Release Clamps: Jorgensen vs. Harbor Freight

Quick Release Clamps: Jorgensen vs. Harbor Freight

08-25-2013 09:34 PM by SirFatty | 44 comments »

I recently purchased some Harbor Freight clamps that are still on sale, “12 clamps, “18 clamps and “36 clamps (the picture shows the 36” as yellow, but they are blue in the store). Decided to go with these because, quite honestly, they look almost exactly like Jorgensen clamps. The main difference, besides the cost, is the plastic/rubberized grip versus the Jorgensen’s hardwood. Although the castings are a bit rough, there’s no doubt where the Harbor F...

Serious Imperfection

Serious Imperfection

This review is for the Harbor Freight (some call it Central Machinery) item #30289. 6” free standing jointer. I’ve had this thing for about 2 years now. It has probably been the most frustrating tool I have but it has also come in handy. This was my first serious woodworking power tool. I’ve read some reviews that said it was basic, but pretty good. I got this because I needed a jointer and it was the only one I could afford. Every other jointer that wasn’...

Earlex Spray Station 5000

Earlex Spray Station 5000

03-28-2008 06:59 AM by thewoodwhisperer | 43 comments »

To sum up, I thought the Earlex did a darn good job spraying pretty much everything I put in it, including oil-based poly, water-based finishes, lacquer, and latex paint. I would probably recommend purchasing some of the smaller tip sets though, since they will increase performance on the water-based stuff. The 5000 does lack some of the spray controls typically found in higher-priced 3 and 4-stage units, but sometimes those extra features are just unnecessary. I found the simplicity of the u...

Great value in a contractor saw

Great value in a contractor saw

11-02-2009 04:11 AM by Glenn | 43 comments »

I’ve been using an early 1980s-era Craftsman 9-inch portable table saw with a steel table and stamped steel extension wings. After deciding that I needed something a little more precise than this older saw, I was looking to upgrade and was attracted to the Bosch 4100-09 partly because of the reviews, but mostly because of the blade guard/riving knife it features. I wasn’t really wanting another portable saw, however, and was looking for something beefier instead. I discovered this...

Well worth the money

Well worth the money

11-05-2009 03:39 AM by Joe | 43 comments »

I find this sander outstanding to use. I purchased this when I realized I would be sanding forever on all those little pieces that made up the two excavator I built. Very easy to use and changing belt to spindle is a snap. Just remember it has left handed threads. I have read on the internet that people had problems with the tracking on the belt. Sure, mine did not track straight right out of the box, but it took a total of 15 seconds for it to track dead straight. You set it once and that’s ...

Do not buy at this time, manufacturing error

Do not buy at this time, manufacturing error

03-12-2013 02:48 PM by asloanie | 43 comments »

I recently bought one of these, returned it, and now am about to return the replacement. The unit comes with a mounting platform and casters. They must have recently changed caster manufacturers as the new ones do not line up with the pre-drilled holes in the metal platform. Both units I got had this exact problem. If you want to use your own platform or drill new holes yourself, this still could be a usable system. Just an FYI. I would recommend opening the small box the caster...

Grizzly G0453 15" Planer

Grizzly G0453 15" Planer

06-04-2009 08:18 AM by Don K. | 43 comments »

Well As I recently stated….I did some serious upgrades in the old shop in the last few weeks, bought a new cabinet saw, new band saw, new jointer and a new planer. This first review will be over the new G0453 15” planer. (actually my second review…the jointer was a few weeks ago) I did some serious thinking about which planer to buy….but decided to go with a new Grizzly since I have had such good luck with my Grizzly jointer. While I really wished I could have went ...

radial arm saw

radial arm saw

03-05-2008 08:08 PM by runngt | 43 comments »

I have read a few reviews and topics about how dangerous radial arm saws are and that now days they have out lived their purpose in wood working. This is something I just don’t get as this was the second tool I purchased for my shop (like new, second hand for $250) and has been one of the best tools and one of my favorites since I brought it home. They are like any tool in your shop dangerous and reading the owners manual twice on this tool is a must. They have a tendency to produce kic...
