A lot for very little

A lot for very little

I thought my saw was reasonably vibration free for a contractor but on start up and especially shut down it would give a slight shudder. After years of ignoring advice to buy a link belt I did and am sorry I waited so long because it’s like having a new saw. I only thought my saw ran smooth but now there is no more shudder even at shut down and I’d swear it cuts a little smoother though that might be psychosomatic. If you’ve been wanting to try a link belt and have been putt...

Ashley Iles Mk 2 Bevel Edged Cabinetmakers Chisels

Ashley Iles Mk 2 Bevel Edged Cabinetmakers Chisels

Ashley Iles Mk 2 Bevel Edged Cabinetmakers Chisels I have for as long as I can remember wished for a quality set of chisels and few years ago I took the decision to spend the money on a set of Bahco 434, and boy did I regret this after… Why? Because what I was looking for was a set of cabinetmaker chisels and not the perfect on site construction chisel that also would be used for opening beer and cans of paint! Say what! This is actually meant as a compliment bec...

Woodworking Magazine Survey

Woodworking Magazine Survey

02-20-2012 04:28 PM by duosonicdave | 49 comments »

Okay LJ’s – time to weigh in. . . I’ve searched around and can’t seem to find a survey/side-by-side comparison of the various woodworking magazines. I’m thinking about taking out my first subscription and find myself wondering, “So, what’s unique about “this” publication vs. “that” publication. I was wondering if those of you who have experience across a wide spectrum of woodworking magazines could describe how they stack ...

Laser wood engraving on the cheap works surprisingly well.

Laser wood engraving on the cheap works surprisingly well.

I make a lot of boxes & cabinets and have long wanted to put pictures and words on items. The latest thing in the tool catalogs are ‘affordable’ laser engravers / cutters that start at several thousand and go up rapidly from there. Obviously that’s out of reach for a dabbler. Searching the internet shows lots of units for between $100 and $200 – all from no-name Chinese cos. Gearbest listed several models from 200mw to 5w. I settled on the 1600mw unit as the bes...

Move over Diablo, Irwin got something right for once

Move over Diablo, Irwin got something right for once

Yesterday I found myself in Lowes. Rumor was they were offloading all of their CMT stuff cheap. While browsing around I stumbled upon the Marples blades. Disclaimer I have a saw blade addiction. If I see something new or exciting, I have to buy it. It’s a problem and I need help! Also I am not a fan of Irwin at all. Their marathon blades are pure garbage, and the “classic” blades are a downgrade from whatever came on your saw – as hard to beleive as that is. I did some...

I am really impressed with this saw

I am really impressed with this saw

06-21-2010 04:41 AM by zierath | 49 comments »

I received this saw about two weeks ago. My wife bought it for me as a father’s day gift. It was packed very well, and there were no parts missing. Set up was simple enough. Lifting it was quite a bit of work; as it is a very heavy piece of equipment. I tuned it up in a very short time and was really impressed how quiet it runs. I’ve been reading books and watching videos on bandsaws and it appears to have many features found on much more expensive saws. I think the quality...

Grizzly G0555

Grizzly G0555

11-12-2011 04:19 AM by mushmouse | 48 comments »

After reading so many positive reviews for the G0555 I went ahead and purchased one. I always seem to be the one in a hundred who gets the lemon. I have limited experience with bandsaws and am hoping it’s just a setup error on my part, and that someone may have some insight they can offer me. I have spoken to Grizzly tech help several times but find their responses inadequate. First the trivial issues (at least I think they are trivial). 1.) Can’t adjust the guide beari...

I saw so much talk in the furniture forum for this book I had to get it. The book arrived Saturday and I immediately began reading it. I had heard that this was a book you have to read while in the shop working on layout. This is true. But because I have yet to get some dividers (hint: buy some dividers because they are the backbone of the whole theory of the book) I read it with a glass of brandy in my chair. I finished it Sunday and turned back to page one to begin again. Basic book geek...

Quick Release Clamps: Jorgensen vs. Harbor Freight

Quick Release Clamps: Jorgensen vs. Harbor Freight

08-25-2013 09:34 PM by SirFatty | 48 comments »

I recently purchased some Harbor Freight clamps that are still on sale, “12 clamps, “18 clamps and “36 clamps (the picture shows the 36” as yellow, but they are blue in the store). Decided to go with these because, quite honestly, they look almost exactly like Jorgensen clamps. The main difference, besides the cost, is the plastic/rubberized grip versus the Jorgensen’s hardwood. Although the castings are a bit rough, there’s no doubt where the Harbor F...

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

04-10-2008 05:58 AM by tooldad | 47 comments »

I have had the opportunity to use about 4 different planers. I owned a Ryobi 12.5” for about a year and returned it because rollers wouldn’t work, They bought a Ridgid and it lasted about 3 months, same problem (Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee are same corp) Finally I bucked up and bought Dewalt after seeing this at the wood show. However I am not the average weekend woodworker being a shop teacher so minimum duty tools just dont’ cut it for me. I also had a Delta 12.5”...
