I’m working on a box project , and I am making up the plan as I go. I’m right at the point where I’m thinking, How am I going to put this together? This is normal for me. I’ve got parts cut and glued together, and I need to connect 2 of the 3 main sections. I’m way past the point of doing any kind of joinery. I have a subscription to Woodsmith Magazine. I think it’s the best. In the current issue ( Vol. 38 Issue 224) is a review of some of their favorit...

Harbor Freight 14" x 40" Wood Lathe: Best for the Small Shop?

Harbor Freight 14" x 40" Wood Lathe: Best for the Small Shop?

As always comments are welcome and encouraged. I have been looking into buying a lathe for some time now. I mainly need it to turn some simple dowels, but I would like to pick up the skill of turning beautiful pieces as well. The Harbor Freight 14” x 40” wood lather is mostly written off by critics mainly because it is an entry-level tool by Harbor Freight. I use this video to highlight why I think it is perfect for my shop and my needs at this moment. Here are a list of some...

Abrasive sanding ball

Abrasive sanding ball

01-01-2016 09:53 PM by htl | 1 comment »

A couple a months ago I needed a flap sander and went to Harbor Freight to pick one up, they had tons of sanding thingys but flap sanders no.The closest thing was this Abrasive ball they have 3 different grits and I got the 80 grit to test out. What it turns out to be is pads like you would use to clean a greasy pot in your sink bolted together to make this ball but with a little bit of sand or other grit glued to the out side.I got the 80 grit thinking it would make fast work out of some ...

Another Harbor Freight Gem

Another Harbor Freight Gem

I picked this hoist up today to install my new Grizzly G0572 Air Filter (see my other review). This little dandy made it a piece of cake to install my air filter by myself. What was really nice about it is the overalllength when fully raised. It what short enough to get the air filter up to the ceiling. My regular chain fall was way to long. With the 20% coupon I paid about $35. If you are going to hang anything like a air filter pick one up and save your back.

Great flush-cut saw

Great flush-cut saw

06-15-2015 02:23 PM by BinghamtonEd | 19 comments »

I’ve owned this saw for about 2 years now, and have been really pleased with it. I’ve used it for tasks ranging from flush-cutting hardwood dowels to trimming baseboard molding back in place to fit a heater. Just yesterday I used it to flush-cut some 1/4”x1/4” white oak filler strips. It’s still cutting well and very sharp. If this breaks, or wears down, or someone walks off with it, I will definitely go buy another one. I’ve tried a few dovetails with...

A decent self centering doweling jig for 12 bucks

A decent self centering doweling jig for 12 bucks

After your 20% off coupon. Compare the exact same jig at Woodcraft for $66.50. I bought this jig yesterday after reading the HF reviews, lots of pros and cons, but the bottom line is you need to clean all the cosmolene off of it, take some time calibrating it, and it’s a great doweling jig for very little money.

Harbor Freight Mobile Base with steel support bars

Harbor Freight Mobile Base with steel support bars

04-18-2015 09:09 PM by PaulHWood | 6 comments »

Thanks to curliejones for the idea and help. substituted 1 1/4 inch 16 gauge tube steel instead of hardwood, approximately a $1 a foot for material. Cut to size, clamped into support and started the holes with a 5/16 bit to mark, then finished drilling with 1/8” starter bit and step bit to 11/32 (bolts are 8mm). All but one lined up perfect, and the last one just took riunning the 5/16 bit throuhg once (likely an interior burr). I painted the steel black to match the mobile base, ...

Good Belt

Good Belt

03-21-2015 05:44 AM by B4B | 11 comments »

So I found a couple 25% off coupons for Harbor Freight. I decided to pickup a link-belt to replace the worn belt on my table saw as part of the tune-up I did recently. The old rubber belt was worn, and I read a lot of good things about these link belts in general, as well as generally good reviews for the Harbor Freight link belt. The one I picked up was labeled “Jason Industrial Inc” and was green in color. I was able to get it sized up and installed in no time. I fired up ...

a versatile tool that functions well.

a versatile tool that functions well.

03-06-2015 04:24 PM by Mainiac Matt | 10 comments »

Although this saw can be used for both wood and metal, because I have better tools for woodworking, I’ve used this exclusively for metal. But that said, I find that having the ability to do a little metal work here and there comes in very handy and supports my wood working. (cutting piano hinges, bolts, black iron pipe, rebar, angle iron, T-track, etc…) I’ve wanted a portable BS since I built my timber frame house 20 years ago. But they were expensive and 4 inches was ...

Works great but with some vibrations

Works great but with some vibrations

I got this angle grinder because i have only used 1 of these a single previous time. I normally used air tools only. so i decided to start out cheap and get one of these. I didnt want the regular one but got the heavy duty instead. I was planning on using this for grinding on metal and cutting metal. Mostly cutting threaded rod for jig building and also for anything else like that. i dont leave a tool in my dremel and so thats the reason why i didnt do that. I ended up getting a crazy g...
