Good Belt

Good Belt

So I found a couple 25% off coupons for Harbor Freight. I decided to pickup a link-belt to replace the worn belt on my table saw as part of the tune-up I did recently. The old rubber belt was worn, and I read a lot of good things about these link belts in general, as well as generally good reviews for the Harbor Freight link belt. The one I picked up was labeled “Jason Industrial Inc” and was green in color. I was able to get it sized up and installed in no time. I fired up ...

a versatile tool that functions well.

a versatile tool that functions well.

Although this saw can be used for both wood and metal, because I have better tools for woodworking, I’ve used this exclusively for metal. But that said, I find that having the ability to do a little metal work here and there comes in very handy and supports my wood working. (cutting piano hinges, bolts, black iron pipe, rebar, angle iron, T-track, etc…) I’ve wanted a portable BS since I built my timber frame house 20 years ago. But they were expensive and 4 inches was ...

I got this angle grinder because i have only used 1 of these a single previous time. I normally used air tools only. so i decided to start out cheap and get one of these. I didnt want the regular one but got the heavy duty instead. I was planning on using this for grinding on metal and cutting metal. Mostly cutting threaded rod for jig building and also for anything else like that. i dont leave a tool in my dremel and so thats the reason why i didnt do that. I ended up getting a crazy g...

Harbor Freight Mortising Machine

Harbor Freight Mortising Machine

01-28-2015 06:47 PM by MrRon | 3 comments »

I bought a Harbor Freight mortising machine around 5 years ago and have not used it on a project, other than to test cut. I now have a project that needs mortising, so I tried it out and I was surprised as to how well it worked. I did have to tweak it and make some modifications which are common to most HF tools. I bought an X/Y cross slide vise and mounted it in place of the hold down device. The bit and chisel was not very sharp, so I diamond honed the chisel and the bit. It now cuts quite ...

Got it as a freebie so I have a hard time complaining, but mine was off by 5/16”. With all the math involved in creating an average piece of furniture….it’s a pain to have to correct for the tape as well. Otherwise decent quality (for inexpensive tapes anyway). Mines relegated to missions to my local wood monger, where precision is not needed. I have since checked multiples at the store, and have yet to find one thats dead on. Oh well it was FREE.

Better than nothing (for free), but you gotta wonder about the dye.

Better than nothing (for free), but you gotta wonder about the dye.

I picked up one pair of these red Harbor Freight split leather work gloves as a freebie, and use them on occasion for gardening. The gloves do the job to protect my hands, but as the HF site reviews say…the dye can run and get on your hands. If you’re wary of the dye being toxic, consider looking elsewhere. In my mind, they’re a last resort if I’m doing something dirty and don’t want to use my Mechanix gloves.

Single-purpose freebie: Paper cutter

Single-purpose freebie: Paper cutter

Harbor Freight item 60274, 47877 is one of the many freebies I stock up on. I wouldn’t call it a multi-purpose tool. My family has one purpose for them: to cut paper, and usually coupon trimming. Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy, but I seem to only cut HF coupons with these scissors, sometimes for more scissor freebies. My wife uses them to trim coupons when we are on a long drive. The complaints I have for this too are: They may be relatively sharp at first but dull very qui...

Light duty freebie that I treat as a consumable

Light duty freebie that I treat as a consumable

The smallest Harbor Freight tarp (item numbers 953, 69248, 69136, 69128) comes up as a freebie every now and then. I stock up on these whenever I see the freebie. The tarp is very thin and very light duty. I treat them as consumables and generally don’t expect them to last more than a couple of uses. I’ve had 2 of them tear on me after snagging a sharp corner of something. Usually they serve to line the minivan when picking up lumber (or an annual Christmas tree), or cover u...

Excellent but Elusive Freebie. Hard to get this wrong.

Excellent but Elusive Freebie. Hard to get this wrong.

I have one of these magnetic parts holder and I have one more freebie coupon to use. Like the 6” counterpart, as a parts organizer, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do: keep the screws in place where I need it. My opinion is the same for this 4” parts organizer and the 6” parts organizer. At the current price of $3 (sans any coupon you might use), it’s hard to get it wrong, and it’s probably coming from the same factory line in China that other stores sell for more...

I’ve been lucky to pick up 2 of these guys with HF freebie coupons in the last few months. As a parts organizer, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do: keep the screws in place where I need it. At the current price of $4 (sans any coupon you might use), it’s hard to get it wrong, and it’s probably coming from the same factory line in China that other stores sell for more. Would I pay for it? Well I got by without it before getting them as freebies. Now I have...
