Harbor Freight 3" x 21" Variable Speed Belt Sander

Harbor Freight 3" x 21" Variable Speed Belt Sander

08-08-2010 07:41 PM by Routerisstillmyname | 4 comments »

Never had a need for a belt sander. Occasionally I thought it would help to have one around just in-case but the prices on belt sanders are ludicrous. Up until now…. HF has two belt sanders on sale and I had a 20% coupon so I took the plunge especially since I desperately needed some aggressive sanding to remove glue from large panels.I decided on this 3”x21” instead on the other one that’s 4×24. Mainly because I liked the weight and I feel that the 6 amps is more than adequate for sa...

Great Value In A Lathe

Great Value In A Lathe

01-18-2014 06:16 PM by OSU55 | 15 comments »

I had never used a lathe for wood turning, and wanted to give it a try. I didn’t want to break the bank to have a lathe for occasional use. As others have, I wound up with this HF model. I haven’t tried anything larger than 6” dia, but so far I’m extremely pleased. I think I paid ~$180 with discounts. Edit – I have since turned up 14” dia bowls. That is about the limit due to the lathe’s min speed of ~600 rpm. Recommended finish turning rpm at 14&#...

Harbor Freight Carbide Faced Carving Disc for 4 1/2" Grinder

Harbor Freight Carbide Faced Carving Disc for 4 1/2" Grinder

I had to carve 2” off the diameter of 4 1/2” pistachio tree that was 50” long and needed something to take off a lot of material without loading up or wearing out. So I tried one of the half donut shaped carving wheels from HF that has pieces of carbide embedded in it. I usually don’t like the cutting tools or sand paper from HF, but this carving wheel is one great abrasive tool. It cut all that wood away and is still sharp enough to do it again. I hate to say that I ...

HF Mobile Base is Dead On and Rock Solid!

HF Mobile Base is Dead On and Rock Solid!

03-14-2012 01:49 PM by Bob | 21 comments »

INTRO:I spent way too much time researching mobile bases. In the end, despite the nay sayers, I decided to give the HF mobile base a try. I paid $29.95 with a super coupon. ASSEMBLY:The metal brackets are very thick. I ripped some SYP I had lying around to the 1 1/4” x 1 1/4 dimension specified. There is a formula in the manual that tells you exactly how long to cut your wood pieces. As a double check, I placed each of the brackets (with bolts in place) against the 4 corners of ...

Great for paint

Great for paint

05-08-2012 01:35 AM by Vrtigo1 | 15 comments »

Let me start out by saying that I am pretty new to spray finishes of any kind. I recently built some MDF shelves and got about half way through the first coat of primer on the first shelf when I remembered how much I hate painting. So I tried to get the wife to do it, then when I realized that wasn’t going to happen I set about finding a faster/easier method. I have an Earlex HVLP system, but from the 1 or 2 times I’ve tried to use it to spray paint I’ve found the proce...

Harbor Freight 60 Piece Alloy Steel SAE/Metric Tap and Die Set

Harbor Freight 60 Piece Alloy Steel SAE/Metric Tap and Die Set

07-26-2012 12:20 PM by b2rtch | 51 comments »

For quite awhile I wanted to buy a tap and die set. I buy many things on Amazon so I shopped on Amazon several times for such a set but the prices for such sets always stopped me from buying one. Last week I was browsing through HF website and I read reviews about this set. The reviews were mostly good, so after work I went to buy one of this set. Strangely enough I have been living many years without such a set but since I bought it I have used it every day!It is quite an extensive se...

Harbor Freight = an exercise in readjusting your expectations ... it is what it is.

I go back some 16 years with Harbor Freight Tools…. And while I don’t often buy from them, I was reminded today that I have to readjust my expectations to reflect their low price point… As a company, I have to say that Harbor Freight has always resolved any issues I’ve had with their products, it wasn’t always a speedy solution, but in the end they made it right. So given the recent positive review about their ‘F’ style bar clamps…. and me...

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

10-12-2011 08:11 PM by ChuckC | 9 comments »

I recently bought the Harbor Freight Inlay Kit. HF obviously doesn’t make it but there’s no other name on the package. I was looking at them from other stores and for $35 for the kit and even more for the templates I always passed it up. This one was $10 and I had a coupon that brought it down to $8. The HF one even adds a centering pin which was a nice touch and the bushing is solid brass. I still needed templates so I designed something quick in Sketchup and cut it out on the...

Harbor Freigth Tree Pruning Tool

Harbor Freigth Tree Pruning Tool

07-12-2014 01:08 PM by b2rtch | 13 comments »

I had several trees with dead branches that I wanted to cut.Several times at Harbor Freight I looked at the cordless electric chainsaw which at $60.00 after rebate is a good buy but being cheap I decided not not buy it but to buy the manual tool instead.I am very glad I did. It is very well build made not of cheap stuff but heavy steel and the adjustable pole is also steel and lock with a 1/4 turn or so.I used this tool most of the day yesterday and I am very happy with it.I paid around $12.0...

Say hello to my little friend, The Harbor Freight 4oz. Detail Spray Gun.

I am generally loathe to buy Harbor Freight tools if they have a motor/moving parts, probably snobbish on my part, and not springing from a lot of actual experiential data. But I have had my eye on this little gun for some time, and as it had dropped in price from $15.00 to the ridiculously low price of $12.95, I jumped on it. I mean how bad can it go, this is the disposable chip brush of spray guns, so if it sucked I wouldn’t cry and would have bought an education in “you get wha...
