Modifying HF's Dust Collector for Better Mobility, Sturdiness & Electrical Capacity

Modifying HF's Dust Collector for Better Mobility, Sturdiness & Electrical Capacity

Over the past six months, I modified my 22’ x 22’ British-style backyard conservatory to serve not only as my gym, as it has since 1997, but also as my workshop (see, photo 1) [If interested in this conversion, including heroic saga of my fighting off tens of thousands of carpenter ants and rebuilding after they ravaged the structure, see my video on VIMEO http://vimeo.com/103100319] In sharing exercising and woodworking in a closed space, I decided that it was imperative to my good h...

Very Happy with this Dust Collector

Very Happy with this Dust Collector

Between sale price and coupon, the price was low enough that I took the plunge and bought the HF 2HP DC. —Starting with assembly:— You end up doing quite of bit of assembly with this unit, not just 2 or 3 connections. The very first thing I did when unpacking the unit was to plug the motor in to make sure it ran. I didn’t want to assemble the whole thing and then discover the motor didn’t work. It fired right up, no problems. I’ve seen talk on the intern...

Hi, First time posting,Long time reader I just finished my HF DC mod. When I first added a seperator with Theinbaffle I noticed a big drop in suction. Once I eliminated all bends and flex hosethe collector seem like I gained all suction back. (Plus saved a lot of room) CollectorIs hung off shelf and only thing touching the floor is seperator can. Seems Awesome. I would like to add a wynn filter at somepoint when I have $$$$. (I can’t see how any more air could flow through t...

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

10-12-2011 08:11 PM by ChuckC | 9 comments »

I recently bought the Harbor Freight Inlay Kit. HF obviously doesn’t make it but there’s no other name on the package. I was looking at them from other stores and for $35 for the kit and even more for the templates I always passed it up. This one was $10 and I had a coupon that brought it down to $8. The HF one even adds a centering pin which was a nice touch and the bushing is solid brass. I still needed templates so I designed something quick in Sketchup and cut it out on the...

Another winner for Harbor Freight

Another winner for Harbor Freight

These anti-fatigue floor mats are very inexpensive, especially when on sale 50% off. They are very easy to install , they fit very well, easy to clean and they look good. Of course I bought them for my comfort but more important I also bought them to save my tools. A Stanley plane or a chisel dropped on the concrete are dead meat, with the mats they have a fair chance to survive.Highly recommended.

So VERY Thankful no one was hurt!!

This could have easily become the most expensive tool in the shop! We bought this adjustable circle cutter a few weeks ago at Harbor Freight. Seemed like it’d be a useful little tool. I’d set it up once on the drill press and used it to drill a test hole on a piece of pine. The arms sticking out spinning around made me kind of uneasy so I switched to a hole cutting saw bit. My husband set the cutter up today on the DP and was using it. One of the cutters came loose during operatio...

These hold down cost the exorbitant price of $1.97 each!!!!! I read about other “famous” brand hold downs which break the first time you use them. These did not break after about ten tries and they in fact hold , as they are supposed to do . Excellent value. One more time, thank you Harbor Freight,my very favorite store.( just for Greg: this is a full review with pictures not from Harbor Freight ’s website but in fact taken on my new bench)The Harbor Freight guy

HF Mobile Base is Dead On and Rock Solid!

HF Mobile Base is Dead On and Rock Solid!

03-14-2012 01:49 PM by Bob | 20 comments »

INTRO:I spent way too much time researching mobile bases. In the end, despite the nay sayers, I decided to give the HF mobile base a try. I paid $29.95 with a super coupon. ASSEMBLY:The metal brackets are very thick. I ripped some SYP I had lying around to the 1 1/4” x 1 1/4 dimension specified. There is a formula in the manual that tells you exactly how long to cut your wood pieces. As a double check, I placed each of the brackets (with bolts in place) against the 4 corners of ...

Worst tool I have ever owned

Worst tool I have ever owned

I bought two of these bar clamps for $8.99 ea at a Harbor Freight store. On one of them the tab on the movable jaw rounded over after a few uses to the point where it would not engage the slots in the bar. The casting on the fixed jaw of the other clamp broke under moderate pressure.I bought them because i liked the design, the length is adjustable. i wrote to Harbor Freight and they offered to send replacements if I returned the broken clamps, they would pay postage. i had already tossed ...

Great Value In A Lathe

Great Value In A Lathe

01-18-2014 06:16 PM by OSU55 | 14 comments »

I had never used a lathe for wood turning, and wanted to give it a try. I didn’t want to break the bank to have a lathe for occasional use. As others have, I wound up with this HF model. I haven’t tried anything larger than 6” dia, but so far I’m extremely pleased. I think I paid ~$180 with discounts. Although I’m new to turning, I’m not new to machinery of all types, and a wood lathe is a simple machine (I’ve been in automated manufacturing in eng...
