Serious Imperfection

This review is for the Harbor Freight (some call it Central Machinery) item #30289. 6” free standing jointer. I’ve had this thing for about 2 years now. It has probably been the most frustrating tool I have but it has also come in handy. This was my first serious woodworking power tool. I’ve read some reviews that said it was basic, but pretty good. I got this because I needed a jointer and it was the only one I could afford. Every other jointer that wasn’...

A barely viable alternative to the Bora, but most are duds

A barely viable alternative to the Bora, but most are duds

After I fitting my power tool collection with both a circular saw and router, I wanted to add a few easy to clamp edge guides to my tool collection. After playing with a variety of different edge guides in the market (Bora, Emerson, Woodriver), I settled on the Bora as the one that felt the best, given the long handle. All reviews about clamp edge tools I read highlighted the aluminum bar’s had a tendency to flex midway through a cut operation, making me think the wide track model was...

Harbor freight bench top drill press

Harbor freight bench top drill press

For a cheap way to drill straight holes you can’t beat it. More for the hobby woodworker though. Unlike everything else I have bought from Harbor Freight assembly was very simple. My only complaint is the power. On the lowest speed(620rpm) I can stop the chuck in my hand. Although with a 1” forstner bit it will go right through oak/ walnut without any trouble. Anything bigger and you might as well give it up. But, for 69.99 then a 20% coupon I can’t complain. Just don&...

Harbor Freight Scissor Lift Table

Harbor Freight Scissor Lift Table

Tool Review 500 lb capacity hydraulic lift table I struggle lowering cabinets or other heavy items from the workbench down to the floor. It’s often more of a controlled drop than anything else. I thought it was just me, but the topic came up on one of the forums recently. Someone mentioned that they used a scissor lift table from Harbor Freight and several others chimed in saying they used the same thing. It was such a simple solution, I had to get one. A friend picked it up...

Good, low cost toggle clamps at Harbor Freight

Good, low cost toggle clamps at Harbor Freight

Just sharing this. When something raises my eyebrows and gets me thinking then maybe it’s worth passing on. I’m going to talk bang for buck. I hope you don’t mind. Yup, I’ve got a few harbor freight tools but not much. I’ve had mixed luck with them. But a friend let me see one of these toggle clamps. I have some from a wood store and I must say, they are very similar but not identical and but both seem to be of the same quality. They’re probably both fr...

Harbor Freight Dado set

Harbor Freight Dado set

I’m certain the purists will condemn me for using the name “Harbor Freight” in connection with woodworking tools, but like it or not, here it is. I don’t use a dado blade very often, so I couldn’t justify $200+ sets like those from Forrest. But when I do need one, I went with the cheapest set I could find. The HF set is 8” and cuts dados up to 7/8”. The teeth are C2 carbide and number 22 teeth. I was impressed by the size of the carbide. They look lik...

The Harbor Freight way of jump starting your clamp collection

The Harbor Freight way of jump starting your clamp collection

When I first began dabbling in woodworking, I had zero clamps and high aspirations. Stocking up on the well F-style Harbor Freight clamps seemed like a good idea. For months, I impulsively made trips to HF and picked up one HF F-style bar clamp (using a 20% off coupon) and 1 freebie per trip. Fast forward 2 years, and I now have 10×6”, 6×12”, 2×18” and 2×24”. Overall impression is that the HF F-style clamp was the most inexpensive way of jump st...

HF Work Bench On Sale

HF Work Bench On Sale

My homemade workbench top (my first big project) gave up a few weeks ago. I saw an advertizement for this and had a coupon for 20% off so net price for the work bench came out to $129 …. not a bad price. Pros:- Assembly is solid .. .I was worried it would be flimsy and it is not- Vice quality is acceptable Cons:- 1/2” bench dog holes that are spaced inconvienently far apart- Either I am bad at assembly or the mounting hardware is slightly off … i had trouble keepi...

Turds That Take a Surprising Polish

Turds That Take a Surprising Polish

So I am working on my workbench that will be made of doug fir. I started making the mortises which I hogged out with a Forstner bit and then I reached for my Narex bench chisels to clean them up. All three of the Narex chisels I used got dinged up blades rather quickly. Not wanting to do any more damage to them (which I probably just didn’t have set up for chopping out corners), I bought this cheap set from Harbor Freight knowing that they had a high likelihood of being total garbage...

Harbor Freight 3/4" Pipe Clamp with Base

Harbor Freight 3/4" Pipe Clamp with Base

05-18-2011 04:00 PM by zindel | 12 comments »

about a week ago i needed to pick up some bar clamps to handle a larger project that I was fixing up. I started off at Ace hardware because i knew i needed the pipe and thought i would check the prices of the clamps…and wow they were $17 big ones, and for 2 of them that means $34 + $22 for the pipes…no thanks. So i pulled out the good old phone and looked on HF to see their price…$9.99 on sale plus these have a base which is a bonus if you ask me. I have used them for a few ...
