Last fall I put up a couple hundred bd ft of ash to air dry in a friend’s building near our summer place. I couldn’t wait to get back this spring to check on the progress so as soon as I got our place open for the year, I called him to see if he could check it with me since he has a pinless Wagner moisture meter that he paid several hundred bucks for. Just before I headed that way, I stopped at our local Harbor Freight store & bought my own meter. It was a pin probe style, ...

2 hp dust collector

2 hp dust collector

I recently purchased a 2 hp dust collector from harbor freight and found, that for the money, it is a very good tool. Assembly was pretty straight forward and took about 2 hours.Yyou should keep a sense of humor when doing that as the instructions are pretty vague and not very accurate as far as descriptions. I bought this to replace a jet DC-650 and it does have considerable more suction pressure and moves a lot more air. All though not as much as the delta counter part which was 3 times the...

Why pay more?

Why pay more?

I bought a new (used) craftsman belt drive table saw about a month ago and was amazed at the vibration. So, following the lead of all the LJ’s who love their link belts, I thought I’d give it a try. In comparing prices, I found two price points:- Harbor freight at $4 per foot, and- Everyone else at $8 per foot. Yankee that I am, guess which price point I chose? I adjusted the length and installed the belt in under 30 minutes last night (Note: I sized the belt to match th...

Decent Dust Collection Really Cheap

Decent Dust Collection Really Cheap

My 1970’s Craftsman Contractors saw has zero dust collection and much of it falls straight down so I thought about using some sort of bag for it. I happened on this canvas “Table Saw Dust Bag” at Harbor Freight and it was only $5.99 so I thought I would give it a whirl. The material is pretty cheap and the snaps aren’t anywhere close to being put on straight or even, but that’s alright. The bag came with the male end of the snaps attached to sheet metal scre...

Good, reliable jig, no longer in the HF catalog...

Good, reliable jig, no longer in the HF catalog...

Since the family blowup at Harbor Freight, a lot of good tools have gone out of the catalog, in particular, the aluminum taper jig. Now I am not sure what all can be said about this thing. It’s just about as straight forward and simple as can be, and it works exactly as you would expect it to. When they were available, they were often on sale for about $13.00, or $11.40 after the 20% off coupon… The jig slides easily along the fence, holds tight and secure, the adjustments h...

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

615 days ago by ChuckC | 9 comments »

I recently bought the Harbor Freight Inlay Kit. HF obviously doesn’t make it but there’s no other name on the package. I was looking at them from other stores and for $35 for the kit and even more for the templates I always passed it up. This one was $10 and I had a coupon that brought it down to $8. The HF one even adds a centering pin which was a nice touch and the bushing is solid brass. I still needed templates so I designed something quick in Sketchup and cut it out on the...

Don't Bother

Don't Bother

I am usually a big fan of Harbor Freight and have gotten a lot of good stuff there. But these sanding discs are truly atrocious. Using a random orbital sander, it took about 2 minutes to wear the grit away. On softwood construction lumber. After sanding an area about 10 inches wide by 48 inches long (just one side) the grit was worn completely away. I don’t know whether the grit doesn’t adhere well or if there is simply not enough grit. Please note: I have only used the...

Momentary Power Foot Switch

Momentary Power Foot Switch

How many time when starting your router or your drill press or other power tool did you wish you had one more hand to grab firmly on the piece you were ready to machine? Often we present a piece of wood on the router just at right place to route it and then we need to let go of it to start the router and then the piece move. Or we hardly can hold one large piece , we do not feel very safe and then we need to let go of one hand to start the router or the drill press. After I refurbished...
