General International 50-260 table saw

General International 50-260 table saw

I had posted this tool review of my cabinet saw purchase a few years ago on a couple woodworking forums, I hope it helps. The picture above is actually the right tilt 50-250 model, the left tilt is the 50-260. Here’s my review on my new GI 50-260 3 h.p left tilt cabinet saw. I’ll try not to get to wordy and keep it short as possible. I ordered it from Mark’s Machinery and had it the next day!! It was more of a good timing thing I think it’s usually 2-3 days. Very we...

General 15” Wood Bandsaw

General 15” Wood Bandsaw

2342 days ago by toyguy | 3 comments »

Without a doubt, the most used/loved machine in my shop is my old reliable General 15 inch bandsaw. This particular saw is an older tool inherited from my Dad. It was manufactured in 1970 in DrummondVille, Que, Canada. Model number of this saw is the 490 and it is still manufactured today, a testimonial to its quality. This is an original General product; not to be confused with the now available General International products that are manufactured off shore. Like a lot of the tool manufactur...

new General drill press

new General drill press

this was my christmas gift(from me to me). I was looking to buy a drill press for a long time. It’s a nice tool, cast iron head and base and it’s heavy so it’s stable. The motor is 3/4HP and has enough power for me. It is made by General so like all the tools they do it is perfect…..

I’m really sort of an old tools kind of guy, and therefore I’m never very enthusiastic when the time comes to use a poly finish. As a matter of fact, I lurk on another list where we refer to this stuff polyurinate. I’ll use shellac or French Polish in a heartbeat. Now, I’ve used the Minwax poly by the gallon for past projects, and I first picked up a quart of the Minwax water based poly from the big blue bigbox store in order to finish out a client’s library t...

General International 50-200R M1 Table Saw

General International 50-200R M1 Table Saw

March 5, 2014 FYI: I have had several different batches of the 50-203 inserts from GI and none have the correct screw location for the table top. The GI provided solution is to drill new holes. GI cannot even tell me which is wrong according to THEIR manufacturing specifications; table top/original insert or the 50-203. I want a resin insert for the good blade. I have made 5 inserts for other uses and currently use one for the good blade cuts. This could be an issue with the 50-275R mo...

General Maxi-Lathe 25-100

General Maxi-Lathe 25-100

2082 days ago by Chris Wright | 3 comments »

General makes two mid size lathes, the 25-100 and the 25-200. They are almost identical except that the 25-100 has a 1/2 HP motor with 6 speed stacked pulley, compared to the 25-200 having a 3/4 HP variable speed motor and the headstock assemble is capable of rotating for outbound turning. I was lucky enough to have a 25-100 donated to the shop and I’ve enjoyed using it now for the past few months. It is capable of turning small bowls, pens and spindles. I did notice when turning a ...

General Machine - 75-050T M1 - Tilting Bench top Mortiser

General Machine - 75-050T M1 - Tilting Bench top Mortiser

1328 days ago by Gator | 4 comments »

Picked this up today at Federated Tool in London, OntarioIt is the General Machine 75-050T1 – Tilting head mortiser. I brought it home and unpacked it. There was a small amount of oil, not pounds of grease to deal with. I had the entire unit wiped down in less than 10 minutes. There were no parts missing, and it was 80% assembled in the box. Instructions were not too bad, there was not much to do. The fence is dead straight and required no shimming. The unit came with 4 chisels, 1/4&...

General International 10-105M1 1.5 hp Dust Collector

General International 10-105M1 1.5 hp Dust Collector

1433 days ago by Manitario | 10 comments »

I bought this dust collector a few weeks ago after much research into dust collection units. Ideally, I’d loved to have been able to afford the cost (in money and shop space) of a cyclone dust collector, but it wouldn’t have fit into my budget or 13×22’ garage. Initially I was interested in the Delta 50-760 after reading some good reviews, however the owner of the local tool store convinced me that the General was a better unit from what he’d heard from his custom...

Solid Jointer

Solid Jointer

1355 days ago by Manitario | 7 comments »

After several weeks of debate, I decided to go with General International for my jointer. I seriously considered going with Grizzly for a jointer, most of the reviews I’ve read about them are very positive, and it sounds like their customer service is second to none. The deciding factor though was having a General dealer in town, so if anything goes wrong or if I have questions it would be easy to get help. The jointer was a display model, so it was already assembled and cleaned. The ...

Good bandsaw but pricey

Good bandsaw but pricey

833 days ago by Manitario | 9 comments »

I’ve had this bandsaw for about 8 months now, so I thought that it was about time to review it. I started looking at bandsaws about a year ago, mainly because I wanted something that I could cut curves with. I didn’t really think much about re-sawing during the decision process, thought it might be something I would do someday, but the real reason for buying a bandsaw would be to cut curves easily. I have several other General International tools, mostly because they are the mai...
