I’m really sort of an old tools kind of guy, and therefore I’m never very enthusiastic when the time comes to use a poly finish. As a matter of fact, I lurk on another list where we refer to this stuff polyurinate. I’ll use shellac or French Polish in a heartbeat. Now, I’ve used the Minwax poly by the gallon for past projects, and I first picked up a quart of the Minwax water based poly from the big blue bigbox store in order to finish out a client’s library t...

General International 50-260 table saw

General International 50-260 table saw

03-15-2008 01:45 AM by OttawaP | 12 comments »

I had posted this tool review of my cabinet saw purchase a few years ago on a couple woodworking forums, I hope it helps. The picture above is actually the right tilt 50-250 model, the left tilt is the 50-260. Here’s my review on my new GI 50-260 3 h.p left tilt cabinet saw. I’ll try not to get to wordy and keep it short as possible. I ordered it from Mark’s Machinery and had it the next day!! It was more of a good timing thing I think it’s usually 2-3 days. Very we...

Why did I wait so long??

Why did I wait so long??

Easily accessible power is priceless in the shop. While installing new outlets would have been the preferable remedy, it wasn’t particularly practical in my case. This cord reel has solved a lot of problems for me. At 30 ft, its long enough to reach any point in my workshop/garage, and can even reach onto my driveway if necessary. And being mounted on the ceiling makes it easy to manage the cord, keeping it off the floor and away from my feet. The reel includes all the needed hardware t...

General International 10-105M1 1.5 hp Dust Collector

General International 10-105M1 1.5 hp Dust Collector

08-25-2010 10:06 PM by Manitario | 10 comments »

I bought this dust collector a few weeks ago after much research into dust collection units. Ideally, I’d loved to have been able to afford the cost (in money and shop space) of a cyclone dust collector, but it wouldn’t have fit into my budget or 13×22’ garage. Initially I was interested in the Delta 50-760 after reading some good reviews, however the owner of the local tool store convinced me that the General was a better unit from what he’d heard from his custom...

Good bandsaw but pricey

Good bandsaw but pricey

04-17-2012 06:27 AM by Manitario | 9 comments »

I’ve had this bandsaw for about 8 months now, so I thought that it was about time to review it. I started looking at bandsaws about a year ago, mainly because I wanted something that I could cut curves with. I didn’t really think much about re-sawing during the decision process, thought it might be something I would do someday, but the real reason for buying a bandsaw would be to cut curves easily. I have several other General International tools, mostly because they are the mai...

Had this saw three months

Had this saw three months

09-19-2012 01:22 PM by Howie | 5 comments »

I had this saw for three months now. It replaced a Ridgid 3650 which served me well. I had been looking at cabinet style saws for a while. I got up one morning and had an email from Woodcrafters that they had this saw for $300.00 off. They only had two(one in the crate, one floor display. I got the one in the crate.(I paid $899.00)Set up was easy(I did it all myself) Originally I put the stock fence on it and I feel that fence was adequate however thru the generosity of my son, I have replaced...

Darned good fer the money.

Darned good fer the money.

This is my first review so please bear with me. I purchased this saw new back in Dec. and have been using it fairly extensively ever since. It was a toss up between this and the Laguna LTS 220 and I picked this as it is 2 hp compared to the 1.75 and it was $100 cheaper (that paid for the mobile base). It” a fairly high tool with a table height of 36” adding a mobile base brought it to 36 3/4”. As I’m a bit of a short a$$ it means a bit of leaning way over to ...

General International 50-200r

General International 50-200r

Purchased this saw after spending time debating which saw offering I was going to give my hard earned cash too. Looked at Grizzley, Saw Stop, Laguna, Steel City, Delta, Shop Fox,Craftsman and many others. I debated the safety aspects of all saws against the Saw Stop and came to the conclusion that for the amount of time I use my saw, and the fact that I am extremely anal about working safely, I ruled out Saw Stop because their price point in my opinion is way to high. Yes I hear it now, what ...

General 15” Wood Bandsaw

General 15” Wood Bandsaw

02-29-2008 04:00 PM by toyguy | 3 comments »

Without a doubt, the most used/loved machine in my shop is my old reliable General 15 inch bandsaw. This particular saw is an older tool inherited from my Dad. It was manufactured in 1970 in DrummondVille, Que, Canada. Model number of this saw is the 490 and it is still manufactured today, a testimonial to its quality. This is an original General product; not to be confused with the now available General International products that are manufactured off shore. Like a lot of the tool manufactur...

I just found this post, curious about the General 90-200 M1 15” saw I read about in Feb. 2010 Woodshop News article about band saws. I’ve owned a 490 since 1985. I bought it knowing I’d need a sturdier, less aggravating tool than my inherited Sears band saw. From day 1 it has been the primary stationary power tool in my shop. I don’t own a table saw, I use the band saw for all cutting. Safer. I’ve been in business as a one-man shop for almost 30 years. I do some ...
