I’m really sort of an old tools kind of guy, and therefore I’m never very enthusiastic when the time comes to use a poly finish. As a matter of fact, I lurk on another list where we refer to this stuff polyurinate. I’ll use shellac or French Polish in a heartbeat. Now, I’ve used the Minwax poly by the gallon for past projects, and I first picked up a quart of the Minwax water based poly from the big blue bigbox store in order to finish out a client’s library t...

new General drill press

new General drill press

this was my christmas gift(from me to me). I was looking to buy a drill press for a long time. It’s a nice tool, cast iron head and base and it’s heavy so it’s stable. The motor is 3/4HP and has enough power for me. It is made by General so like all the tools they do it is perfect…..

General Maxi-Lathe 25-100

General Maxi-Lathe 25-100

General makes two mid size lathes, the 25-100 and the 25-200. They are almost identical except that the 25-100 has a 1/2 HP motor with 6 speed stacked pulley, compared to the 25-200 having a 3/4 HP variable speed motor and the headstock assemble is capable of rotating for outbound turning. I was lucky enough to have a 25-100 donated to the shop and I’ve enjoyed using it now for the past few months. It is capable of turning small bowls, pens and spindles. I did notice when turning a ...

General International 50-260 table saw

General International 50-260 table saw

I had posted this tool review of my cabinet saw purchase a few years ago on a couple woodworking forums, I hope it helps. The picture above is actually the right tilt 50-250 model, the left tilt is the 50-260. Here’s my review on my new GI 50-260 3 h.p left tilt cabinet saw. I’ll try not to get to wordy and keep it short as possible. I ordered it from Mark’s Machinery and had it the next day!! It was more of a good timing thing I think it’s usually 2-3 days. Very we...

Great Machine, intructions leave something to be desired.

Great Machine, intructions leave something to be desired.

I purchased this machine after reading a lot of top reviews. My inital take on the machine was it is pretty well made. However, when I went to set it up, the instructions were very lacking…there were several steps missing, and they did not even address how to attach the upper work hold down clamp. After l looking closely at the pictures on the web, I finally figured out how to install it. The machine was very stiff to use at first. After a run of about 10 mortices, I reshapred the ch...

Outstanding Saw for the Home Shop

Outstanding Saw for the Home Shop

I have owned this saw for approx. two years now. In reality I would rate it at about 4.5 stars only due to a minor annoyance. I had been using a bench top Delta given to me by my father in-law for a few years and had become VERY frustrated with this kind of saw. In my search for a contractor style saw it came down to either the Powermatic or the General; I am glad I chose the General. It was accurate right out of the box; I used a Master Plate / Master Guage setup to check the blade and ...

General 15” Wood Bandsaw

General 15” Wood Bandsaw

639 days ago by toyguy | 3 comments »

Without a doubt, the most used/loved machine in my shop is my old reliable General 15 inch bandsaw. This particular saw is an older tool inherited from my Dad. It was manufactured in 1970 in DrummondVille, Que, Canada. Model number of this saw is the 490 and it is still manufactured today, a testimonial to its quality. This is an original General product; not to be confused with the now available General International products that are manufactured off shore. Like a lot of the tool manufactur...
