Good bandsaw but pricey

Good bandsaw but pricey

818 days ago by Manitario | 9 comments »

I’ve had this bandsaw for about 8 months now, so I thought that it was about time to review it. I started looking at bandsaws about a year ago, mainly because I wanted something that I could cut curves with. I didn’t really think much about re-sawing during the decision process, thought it might be something I would do someday, but the real reason for buying a bandsaw would be to cut curves easily. I have several other General International tools, mostly because they are the mai...

General International 50-200r

General International 50-200r

Purchased this saw after spending time debating which saw offering I was going to give my hard earned cash too. Looked at Grizzley, Saw Stop, Laguna, Steel City, Delta, Shop Fox,Craftsman and many others. I debated the safety aspects of all saws against the Saw Stop and came to the conclusion that for the amount of time I use my saw, and the fact that I am extremely anal about working safely, I ruled out Saw Stop because their price point in my opinion is way to high. Yes I hear it now, what ...

Does anybody have an opinion on this lathe?

Does anybody have an opinion on this lathe?

I am seriuosly considering buying this lathe because of the swivel head stock. It has very similiar features of the DELTA 46-460 and the JET 1220. It is priced higher than both. Is it worth the extra $ ?

Solid Jointer

Solid Jointer

1339 days ago by Manitario | 7 comments »

After several weeks of debate, I decided to go with General International for my jointer. I seriously considered going with Grizzly for a jointer, most of the reviews I’ve read about them are very positive, and it sounds like their customer service is second to none. The deciding factor though was having a General dealer in town, so if anything goes wrong or if I have questions it would be easy to get help. The jointer was a display model, so it was already assembled and cleaned. The ...

Replacing an old benchtop planer

Replacing an old benchtop planer

1246 days ago by Ian_S | 7 comments »

I recently purchased ($1390.00) this planer from my local woodworking store Warren Cutlery in Rhinebeck New York. The planer was on display in the store, so all I had to do set up wise was bolt on the cast iron bed extensions, connect the dust collection hood and install a plug. Set up time under two hours. The adjustment screws on the bed extensions were easy to use when leveling the beds, though the screws on each end had limited room for turning the allen key. This planer appears to b...

Might want to spend a few extra bucks

Might want to spend a few extra bucks

So it seems in the world of scratch awls, the price range seems to be $4.50-24.50. Sure, there are plenty of examples of awls that are priced higher and lower, but 95% seem to fall in this range. The General 818 is in the cheap camp at $4.50. When I decided to buy this tool, my school of thought was “its a glorified nail fastened to the end of a stick, how could a manufacturer possibly screw it up?” In other words, I figured the $4.50 tool was probably almost as good as the more e...

Had this saw three months

Had this saw three months

662 days ago by Howie | 5 comments »

I had this saw for three months now. It replaced a Ridgid 3650 which served me well. I had been looking at cabinet style saws for a while. I got up one morning and had an email from Woodcrafters that they had this saw for $300.00 off. They only had two(one in the crate, one floor display. I got the one in the crate.(I paid $899.00)Set up was easy(I did it all myself) Originally I put the stock fence on it and I feel that fence was adequate however thru the generosity of my son, I have replaced...

I just found this post, curious about the General 90-200 M1 15” saw I read about in Feb. 2010 Woodshop News article about band saws. I’ve owned a 490 since 1985. I bought it knowing I’d need a sturdier, less aggravating tool than my inherited Sears band saw. From day 1 it has been the primary stationary power tool in my shop. I don’t own a table saw, I use the band saw for all cutting. Safer. I’ve been in business as a one-man shop for almost 30 years. I do some ...

Outstanding Saw for the Home Shop

Outstanding Saw for the Home Shop

I have owned this saw for approx. two years now. In reality I would rate it at about 4.5 stars only due to a minor annoyance. I had been using a bench top Delta given to me by my father in-law for a few years and had become VERY frustrated with this kind of saw. In my search for a contractor style saw it came down to either the Powermatic or the General; I am glad I chose the General. It was accurate right out of the box; I used a Master Plate / Master Guage setup to check the blade and ...

General Machine - 75-050T M1 - Tilting Bench top Mortiser

General Machine - 75-050T M1 - Tilting Bench top Mortiser

1313 days ago by Gator | 4 comments »

Picked this up today at Federated Tool in London, OntarioIt is the General Machine 75-050T1 – Tilting head mortiser. I brought it home and unpacked it. There was a small amount of oil, not pounds of grease to deal with. I had the entire unit wiped down in less than 10 minutes. There were no parts missing, and it was 80% assembled in the box. Instructions were not too bad, there was not much to do. The fence is dead straight and required no shimming. The unit came with 4 chisels, 1/4&...
