Shopsmith clamps

Shopsmith clamps

I was using these clamps today and thought to myself that I have never seen a review of these clamps on LJ. These are my favorite clamps for gluing up panels (like table tops or chair bottoms). What you see in this picture will be a chair bottom by the end of the day. When you tighten these clamps you are applying pressure to the edges and the sides. This does a great job of keeping the boards aligned. I particularly like these clamps when I am making something that is too big to ...

Five Stars for 5 basic tools

Five Stars for 5 basic tools

The year was 1947. Hans Goldschmidt thought that post war America could use a quality combination woodworking tool. Most do-it-yourself folks at the time didn’t have the luxury of having a large basement or spare building to devote to a workshop. He was right. It became the largest selling power tool of its time. The ads talked of having 5 power tools in one, with accessories for at least a half dozen more. In 1952, my dad was listening. This is a long overdue review of that ve...

Shopsmith Joint Matic - Horizonal Router

Shopsmith Joint Matic - Horizonal Router

First I must say that the photos are not mine. I surfed the net and found them. This review is for a discontinued tool. Can’t buy it new anymore, but if you find one, grab it. It is a rare tool. Shopsmith originally sold for $999. There is currently one for sale on craigslist.org in Dallas for $600 I bought mine on eBay a few years ago. It came with a Porter Cable router base that fits my 690.Even came with the optional Shopsmith stand. I got one heck of a bargain. Paid twice a...

Now HERE'S a drill press for woodworking

Now HERE'S a drill press for woodworking

Here’s my review of the Shopsmith Mark V in drill press “mode”. I am convinced it is one of the only truly designed-for-woodworking drill presses on the market. Go take a look at drill presses on the market today… they’re all equipped with a beautiful dinner plate sized table. -Which isn’t worth beans for woodworking… want proof? How many guys have built their own “aftermarket” table to fix the problem? How many places offer pre-built drill press tabl...

Shopsmith by Magna 11" bandsaw...small, simple, unchanged for a half century

Shopsmith by Magna 11" bandsaw...small, simple, unchanged for a half century

I decided I’d review my 1956 Shopsmith band saw. Why would anyone care about a 50 plus year old band saw???(except for a couple of old Shopsmith nuts?)Because it’s a great saw and you can still buy one new today from Shopsmith, or used on ebay, and you’d be getting essentially the same machine as my 50 year old saw.(and I consider that a good thing) Now, why would anyone build the same tool for a half century while everyone around you changes stuff almost as often as car ...

Shopsmith Thickness Planer

Shopsmith Thickness Planer

2365 days ago by bkhop | 12 comments »

Here’s my review of the Shopsmith thickness planer. I’ve had mine for about 2 years now and it is a great planer. It replaced a Delta TP305. Let’s start out with the specs – 12” x 4” capacity; 28” long bed; for HP, read #1 below. 1. The Shopsmith Thickness planer comes in two variations that are basically identical except that one is mounted on the Shopsmith Mark V and the other is a “free-standing” tool with its own stand and motor;...

New use for an old tool

New use for an old tool

1878 days ago by Sam Butler | 12 comments »

I purchased an Shopsmith (SS) 25 years ago when I first started woodworking. It was a good start but I quickly realized that I needed stand alone tools. The table saw aspects of the Shopsmith was the most inadequate. After selling the SS I missed the drill press, horizontal boring, lathe and disc sander. So a few years ago I purchased a Mark V for a few hundred dollars. It did not have the upgrade to the 510 which is why I was able to buy it for a low price. It was great to have the old frien...

Just the right size for many projects

Just the right size for many projects

SST just left his review of the Shopsmith 11” bandsaw. What you’ll see between my bandsaw and his bandsaw is that both of them are the same “base” units. The saws are exactly the same, even though mine was manufactured about 45 years later, just as he mentioned in his review. The differences are what I’ll point out in my review. The table, as you can see, is the first main difference. SST’s bandsaw has a nice, heavy cast iron table. Mine has an aluminum ...

ShopSmith Vs. Gator 3 X 21, 80 grit sanding belts. Price comparison.

ShopSmith Vs. Gator 3 X 21, 80 grit sanding belts. Price comparison.

ShopSmith sells 4 3X21 Sanding Belts for $17.98 at LowesGator sells 5 3X21 Sanding Belts for $5.98 at Lowes Figure $4.50 for each ShopSmith Vs. $1.20 per Gator I used both belts to sand the aluminum oxide finish off hardwood flooring for use in a project. That is some very tough finish. I sanded until I had to apply downward pressure on the belt sander to get a bite. I stopped there. Mind you the flooring finish dulls out the sand paper very quickly. Take a look at this picture: ...

Shopsmith 40 grit sanding discs (5")

Shopsmith 40 grit sanding discs (5")

325 days ago by Purrmaster | 5 comments »

I discovered these at Lowe’s about a year ago. Often I have need to sand out a defect and the lowest grit discs gets it done the most quickly. These discs are 8 hole, hook and loop (velcro) 5 inch discs. I’ve been very pleased with these discs. They cut pretty quickly and them seem to last a long time. Not as long as Abranet, but they’re pretty durable. These discs compare favorably with Diablo, 3M, and Norton (the other brands I’ve mostly used). These thi...
