There is just something about wooden hand planes that makes you want to pick one up. I think for me, it’s the warmth of the wood—-the tactile sensation of the wooden plane body compared to the cold steel of a modern plane. I have admired many wooden planes from afar, but no longer! I offered to do a review on the Nice Ash plane. Wood planes always intrigued me. I’ve restored a lot of them. They are stuck in corners, on shelves and above cabinets all over my house and shop. With a few exception, everyone has been made to work. The only ones I typically use though are a couple I made myself, but I normally use metal planes. I gave this a 3 and would have gone to 3.5 if I could. I believe part of the reason for the lower score is this plane is one of the first 25 ...

I had contacted rhett after seeing a post about evaluating hand planes. Rhett sent me a care package to share with my students. I run a woodworking club for my 7th and 8th grade students. I recieved a completed plane with test shavings, a plane glued up, a kit ready to be glued and some blades and plane body blanks. Rhett with Nice Ash planes sent me a plane to review which I was happy to do. The only thing I’ve used close to this plane is a Krenov plane I made with a hock iron. This plane I received works far better than the one I made in many ways. I guess this one would be their “Jack Ash” size. In any case I think it is a very versatile size plane.
