Dozuki Style, But Some Differences

Dozuki Style, But Some Differences

10-17-2015 01:59 PM by DylanC | 1 comment »

Let me start by saying this is my first venture into the world of anything other than a “construction” grade handsaw. My thoughts and opinions here are based on a whopping 10 minutes of experience. I was looking at this saw as an inexpensive alternative to a traditional dozuki style saw as I build my tool set. At less than 1/4 the cost of a Z-saw, I didn’t have much to lose. Anyway, the thing is a bit of a monster at just over 21” in length, with the cutting port...

Update:It was mentioned in a review I wrote about another tool that it took me 20 years before I wrote a review and that as far as he was concerned what I say doesn’t really count. So I thought I would update why it took so long to write my review. I have always been very happy with this tool. It’s done plenty of studs and joists and decks. Cut just great and runs like a champ. My only complaint arose the one time I do not have a table saw and I had to make some precision on a pro...

20V MAX* Lithium Ion Compact Drill/Driver Kit

20V MAX* Lithium Ion Compact Drill/Driver Kit

This was one of my wife’s impulse buys. I have stayed clear of battery powered drills, not because I haven’t had them, I have. I have one at work and I use it as much as I use a power drill at home (not drill press) – very little. Since I use it so rarely, I have to charge it before I can use it. I have 2 Milwaukee corded drills at home which I like a lot – One impact and the other is not. I was putting in a wall up on Saturday (covering an exposed cinder block ...

A real workhorse

A real workhorse

I’ve had this planer for almost 2 years now so I’ve had plenty of time to make up my mind I think. I got it as a package with the add-on tables and an extra set of blades. Out of the box all I needed to do was get the tables attached and it was ready to go. One thing to know going into this you need something to direct the chips off of it. The chip blower REALLY works and wood chips will be flying all over. I made the mistake of using it without anything and it looked like a torna...

Pretty Satisfied with Replacement for my Bosch Sander

Pretty Satisfied with Replacement for my Bosch Sander

02-12-2015 03:27 AM by CharlesA | 5 comments »

I’ve had my Bosch 1295DVSK ROS for several years and have been mostly happy with it, but two things have been a disappointment: 1) it chatters more than it seems reasonable; and, 2) the vacuum attachment doesn’t hold well anymore, partially due to the rubber ring on the sander itself getting brittle. I’ve read several reviews of the DeWalt, so I decided to see if it was the answer. This reconditioned model is only $59 at CPO Three observations: 1) I did not do a direc...

Testing drills and impact

Testing drills and impact

Of all the drills I have, I really like the Dewalt XR brushless. They are very smooth running drills and I like the three light setup. They do have more power than the 18v. The Porter Cable is a nice drill but, it didn’t feel comfortable in my hand and the length of the grip is to short. The Dewalt is the one I like the most. It is heavier than the Makita but it has twice the power. The Dewalt 5 hour batteries are well worth the money. After testing all the cordless tools out there I we...

Great workhorse for my woodworking, but I often wish I have variable speed

Great workhorse for my woodworking, but I often wish I have variable speed

This Dewalt sander was a phenominal upgrade to my old Craftsman sander. I got this sander to replace the Craftsman it because vibration feedback I felt from my Craftsman tended to leave my arm with a “funny tingling” feeling after extended use. Fearing long-term issues, I thought I was due for a replacement. Good: The sander has been my go-to sander for well over a year now. It took a little getting used to the power switch from a rocker style on my Craftsman, but over time,...

Shelix cutterhead for DW735

Shelix cutterhead for DW735

10-27-2014 12:24 AM by johnstoneb | 10 comments »

I bought a DW735 planer about a year and a half ago. The knives were starting to get some nicks in them and time rotate then. I decided after talking with somebody at the local woodworking club that had changed to a Shelix cutterhead to do the same. I ordered the cutterhead direct from Byrd. Price was only about $10 more than Amazon and freight was less. so price worked out about the same. The cutterhead was well packed came with four extra cutters , the tool to change the cutters and...

10 years and still going

10 years and still going

I am a shop teacher at a middle school in Abbotsford BC. We purchased 8 of these Dewalt scroll saws 10 years ago and have have only had to replace 1 of them (the motor went after 9 years). One more saw is making some funny sounds in its upper arm and will most likely be done soon (I will take the motor and place it in my other saw). The saws get used by grade 6-8 students cutting from 3/4” alder to 1 and 3/4” basswood. I must say that my students are not easy on the saws and I hav...
