The DMT 3” x 8” DiaSharp® Stone, 8000x – described as a super fine stone quote – “The extra-extra fine (8000x) produces a mirror finish.” The accompanying literature says they are broken in at the factory. Well I gave this the old college try. At first touch you could tell it was way, way too coarse. So I tried breaking it in. I spent forty minutes or so working the back of a Pfiel chisel methodically over the stone on the side indicated on t...

DMT DuoSharp Fine/Extra Fine is just not worth it

DMT DuoSharp Fine/Extra Fine is just not worth it

Edit: I am leaving the original post below, and I will repeat this portion of the post below, where it makes sense with the rest of the comments; but, these “stones” are actually pretty good, but the Grit they give you is a lie. I am sticking with the two stars because I wanted a 600 grit stone, not a 6000 grit stone. Ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but after all the posts and differing opinions I decide to do some tests. The test parameters were basically to flatte...

Perfect stone for grinding and flattening tools and other stones.

For the past couple years I have been sharpening my tools using the Scary Sharp method. To grind a new bevel on a plane iron or chisel I would use a grit anywhere from 80-120 grit sheets. The paper cuts fast but it also wears fast. Another problem with the paper is it clogged up quickly. With all the irons that I sharpen I was just going through a ton of paper so I started looking into coarse diamond stones. DMT sell two different types of bench stones. They have the DiaSharp which are a s...

I have a worksharp 3000. {review of worksharp 3000} I use it every time I am in the shop. It is great for touch-up on a chisel and your right back to work. Because I hone more than anything else, I was in need to replace my 1000 and 3600 grits. If you get the replacements from Worksharp it can get pricey. The 1000 is a dollar and the 3600 is about five bucks. So I found DMT’s Magna-Disc Sharpening System for about 50 bucks from amazon. I received it and followed the directions in the b...

Diamond sharpening Kit

Diamond sharpening Kit

This kit came with 4 “stones” – actually 4 steel plates. The extra course is a little smoother than road surface. When I used this to flatten my 8000 grit water stone, I found that my flattening stone has been worn to a point that is no longer flat. When you get these, sharpen a piece of steel or something hard where you are not looking for that pristine mirror finish. I made a blade for a radius plane – thank Mads for this, the blade is now done – and went...
