General Finishes Satin Topcoat Gel Review

General Finishes Satin Topcoat Gel Review

On a recent clock order, the customer wanted a satin finish. I have always had semi-gloss as the preferred finish, but satin was his choice. I’ve seen General Finishes products on the better woodworking websites and magazines, so I thought I’d give it a try, as finishing is not my strong point. What I was looking for was a finish that would go on easily, evenly and not hide the wood, so I selected the General Finishes Oil Based Gel Urethane Topcoat. This product deliv...

This is my 2-cents on this mighty fine finish from Generals. It’s grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8!, As Tony the Tiger would have said. I used this for the 1st time on the 3 in 1 crib that I just built for my youngest Grndson. I used a sort of “French-Ball” to apply the recommended 3 coats. I had some issues getting it not to orange peel and solved that then bubbles. I tlaked to Tom at the factory and he was more than helpful. Drying time is an issue,...

Last summer I was working on a cutting board my girlfriend and looked deeply into what i could use to finish it. I considered the normal oil and wax, however that needs to be reapplied after some time of use. I then stumbled upon this salad bowl finish by General Finishes and all i can say is WOW! The cutting board i made for her last summer still looks great and fully water proof. You can take a look for yourself: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/44940 This is after almost daily use for...

General Finishes Gel Stain, a good deal

General Finishes Gel Stain, a good deal

I bought some of this because I am refinishing a dresser ( saddly store bought). The dresser has been replaced by one I built. While it sat in my garage, it was noticed by a friend that wanted to relocate it to their home, but they wanted to have it refinished. So I sanded and sanded, then I dyed the unknown Malaysian wood to find out some sections did not take any dye at all, if I hadn’t sanded it myself, I would have thought there was excess glue in those places. So I put on a coa...
