Fundamentals of Inlay: Stringing, Line & Berry DVD By Steve Latta

I was really not going to buy the Tool kit but when it included the DVD by Steve Latta who actually was the one responsible for the development design with lie-Nielsen I decided to pull the trigger and invest in the kit. For me the DVD was worth the entire cost of the kit and the tools were the added bonus Steve spoke slow enough to leave time to grasp the topic and made each step clear. When explaining a new term he was easy to understand. Each section flowed seamlessly to the next and was l...

Another Great Lie-Nielsen

Another Great Lie-Nielsen

I have been messing around with this plane for about a month now – trying it sharpened at different angles and degrees of convex, using it in different woods and grains etc. I have made a lot shavings with it, but I wanted to put this plane to some real-world use before writing this review. I just finished the cherry panels for eleven cabinet doors with it. So I can now make some credible comments on it. As you might expect from Lie-Nielsen, its a real pretty plane and all you had ...

Lie Nielsen block plane

Lie Nielsen block plane

09-27-2013 07:24 AM by Purrmaster | 4 comments »

This review is for the Lie Nielsen small bronze block plane. I’m pretty sure I got the low angle one. This plane is great. The Stanley Sweetheart block plane I have was ok but this thing is leagues ahead of it. It’s a dinky little critter with a 1 1/4 inch blade. Mine is made of bronze, though iron ones are available. The plane is perfectly made. The sides are perfectly square to the sole and the sole is flat as a pancake. The blade is nice and thick, especially for ...

Great plane, great customer service, surprisingly bad quality control

Great plane, great customer service, surprisingly bad quality control

Let me start off by saying this is the best plane I’ve ever used. I can run it any direction with or against the grain and leave a mirror-smooth surface, taking translucent shavings. The reason I docked a star is Lie-Nielsen’s quality control isn’t very good. When I first received the plane (ordered brand new off their website), there were several problems: - The chipbreaker’s leading edge didn’t contact the blade, it was ground wrong. This means small sha...

This DVD impressed me, where some of his others have not. I learned that I have been wasting time by failing to follow these methods, and I am eager to try them out to see what difference it will make. The 65 minutes covers hand planing, mortise and tenons, rabbets and fillisters, joinery and curved work, all employing the Coarse, Medium and Fine methods. From the DVD back cover: ”Most woodworking projects involve roughing, refining and finishing operations. In this DVD, Chr...

O1 vs A2

O1 vs A2

06-11-2013 01:34 AM by DouginVa | 5 comments »

This past Christmas I put the Lie Nielsen bevel edge socket chisels on my Santa Please Get Me List. Between my wife and mom I got 5….....of the O1 chisels. My bad, I should have been more specific. I already had a set of decent chisels from long ago and although I didn’t know for sure what type of tool steel they were made from I was disappointed in how long, or briefly in this case, they held a sharp edge. After reading many reivews on the A2 chisels I decided that was what I...

Lie-Nielsen 15ppi Rip Carcass Saw

Lie-Nielsen 15ppi Rip Carcass Saw

For over a year I’ve been searching for a few decent backsaws I could use for dovetails, tenons, etc. I quickly found that the vintage route was not going to turn anything up as quickly as I wanted, so I figured I would see about buying my first brand new woodworking tool. After quite a bit of research, I settled on Lie-Nielsen. I seriously contemplated the Veritas saws as they seemed to have good reviews and were half the price, but I just couldn’t get past the look of the saw...

Quality Planes really are different

Quality Planes really are different

03-21-2013 10:20 PM by DouginVa | 18 comments »

I was parusing Craigslist today and a Lie Nielson Low Angle Adjustable Mouth Block Plane was posted…..and it said $100 or make an offer. The post couldn’t have been on there for more than a few minutes so I offered $80. The poster said Ok, but come down quickly if you can. I wrapped up what I was doing and called for the address and this woman obviously had no idea what she had or was selling. She said it was a gift to her husband who simply hasn’t even used it and doesn...

Lie-Nielsen Shoot Board Plane

Lie-Nielsen Shoot Board Plane

03-16-2013 05:29 PM by paratrooper34 | 25 comments »

This is a second review on LJs for this plane. I am going to go through receiving the plane, unpacking it, setting it up, and putting it to use. As a hand tool worker, I have become very dependent on my shooting board for many uses. It excels at cleaning up pieces that have been crosscut to get them square and smooth. I also use it for precise length sizing for multiple pieces. So it is in use on every project. That alone convinced me to purchase this plane. I ordered the plane by ...

Lie-Nielsen Holdfasts

Lie-Nielsen Holdfasts

03-10-2013 05:00 PM by paratrooper34 | 10 comments »

Recently, a fellow LJ posted that he was going to get a set of LN holdfasts. There were several posters to that thread that were pretty outspoken as to LN’s choice of material for the holdfasts; cast ductile iron. The OP of that thread sent a message to Chris Schwarz asking for his opinion on the LN holdfasts and he replied that they were quality items. I own several other LN products and was pretty sure that LN was absolutely not going to manufacture, market, and sell an item that w...
