Is it worth $500?

Is it worth $500?

It all depends. Here is my philosophy for buying tools, if I say to myself “Gee it would be nice to have XXXXX tool so I could make this operation easier” 3 times, then I buy the tool. I do it this way because I know that I will be using the tool, and it makes my woodworking easier. Shooting a board is one of those operations that seem simple enough, just make a shooting board and shave the end grain with a plane. THe problems comes with the execution. At least for me. I tried ...

Why did it take so long?

Why did it take so long?

I have wanted one of these saws since I first laid eyes on one. Rob Cosman had a set of these in his toolkit , and I first got to handle one about 4 years ago. The problem was that rob’s was kinked. so I didn’t get to use it. My new Lie-Nielsen panel saw arrived today, so the first thing i did was rip open the packaging and put it through it’s paces.I may not be extremely accomplished as a furniture maker, but i have done my share of construction with hand tools, and feel...

Well i wonder if you guys can guess what i got for Christmas!!! :) I’ve got a few planes, you know the regular an old stanley some Veritas Bevel up planes, and a Lie-Nielsen block plane but out of them all this has got to be one of my favorites!!!!!! First off you would be surprised how much a rabbeting block plane would come in handy. I don’t have a shoulder plane but even if i did i couldn’t see liking it more than this. I can get a full 1 3/4” width of cut which ...

Lie-Nielsen 15ppi Rip Carcass Saw

Lie-Nielsen 15ppi Rip Carcass Saw

59 days ago by carguy460 | 12 comments »

For over a year I’ve been searching for a few decent backsaws I could use for dovetails, tenons, etc. I quickly found that the vintage route was not going to turn anything up as quickly as I wanted, so I figured I would see about buying my first brand new woodworking tool. After quite a bit of research, I settled on Lie-Nielsen. I seriously contemplated the Veritas saws as they seemed to have good reviews and were half the price, but I just couldn’t get past the look of the saw...

Any sweeter and I woulda had to go to the dentist..

For the past several months I’ve been on somewhat of a handtool kick, with a focus on DTs. Like most people I started with a Japanese pull saw, because it was cheaper. I just couldn’t get comfortable with the straight handle and also don’t like cutting on the pull stroke, bottom line was I wanted a western saw. Anyways I went to my local Woodcraft to pick up a couple unrelated items and I asked one of the employee’s if they could order me one of those new $80 Ver...

Lie-Nielsen Holdfasts

Lie-Nielsen Holdfasts

74 days ago by paratrooper34 | 10 comments »

Recently, a fellow LJ posted that he was going to get a set of LN holdfasts. There were several posters to that thread that were pretty outspoken as to LN’s choice of material for the holdfasts; cast ductile iron. The OP of that thread sent a message to Chris Schwarz asking for his opinion on the LN holdfasts and he replied that they were quality items. I own several other LN products and was pretty sure that LN was absolutely not going to manufacture, market, and sell an item that w...

Fundamentals of Inlay DVDs

Fundamentals of Inlay DVDs

1004 days ago by RogerBean | 8 comments »

I’ve had the recent opportunity to spend some serious time with Steve Latta’s three DVD set produced by Lie Nielsen. Many of us are inspired by the great inlay work of traditional furniture, but find it intimidating to begin cutting little grooves and the like into our newly created masterpiece. So we often pull up short, and fail to finish the piece with the inlays it calls for. Or, we can try the trial and error method at our peril. Neither is necessary any longer. These videos show yo...

The Best Plane Ever Made?

The Best Plane Ever Made?

139 days ago by BigDawg | 8 comments »

I purchased this plane in October 2012. Since then I’ve used the plane on several projects to put it through its paces. My thoughts toward this plane are simple; it’s a great plane right out of the box.I have sharpened the iron twice. The back of the iron was perfectly flat right from the get-go. All I had to do was hone the secondary bevel. My expectation of needing to flatten the iron was unfounded. The thick blade makes sharpening a breeze. I prefer to use an Eclipse-style honing guide an...

What a Dream... I love this Plane!

What a Dream... I love this Plane!

This plane is my first foray into the world of Lie-Nielsen. WOW! I am impressed; we get so very used to mediocre products that when we get our hands on products with this level of craftsmanship it simply blows you away. Don’t get me wrong, I love my old planes. However, I hated using the block planes I had picked up here and there. They were just too difficult to use accurately. This plane was ready to go straight out of the box. The sole is, as far as I can tell, perfectly flat and the ...

A must have for my shop

A must have for my shop

950 days ago by Chris | 7 comments »

This was a birthday present this year; I have only just been able to get some shop time with it. I am in the middle of a bookcase build and found this to be invaluable removing the whisper thin bit of wood needed to make the shelves fit just right or to clean up the home made moldings to complete the top of the case. Ease of Use:If you have used other planes you will find this plane to be straight forward and intuitive. Adjustments: The mouth is adjusted by loosening the locking screw...
