Great plane, great customer service, surprisingly bad quality control

Great plane, great customer service, surprisingly bad quality control

Let me start off by saying this is the best plane I’ve ever used. I can run it any direction with or against the grain and leave a mirror-smooth surface, taking translucent shavings. The reason I docked a star is Lie-Nielsen’s quality control isn’t very good. When I first received the plane (ordered brand new off their website), there were several problems: - The chipbreaker’s leading edge didn’t contact the blade, it was ground wrong. This means small sha...

Lie-Nielsen #62 low angle jack plane

Lie-Nielsen #62 low angle jack plane

When I first got this plane, I posted this comment on the “Hand Plane of your dreams” Thread. Since then I’ve used the plane a few time. My thoughts toward this plane remain the same. Its a great plane right out of the box. I have sharpened it once. The back of the iron was perfectly flat right from the get-go. All I had to do was sharpen. My expectation óf needing to flatten the iron was unfounded. The thick blade makes sharpening a breeze. I am good enough to sharpen...

Lie-Nielsen Shoot Board Plane

Lie-Nielsen Shoot Board Plane

This is a second review on LJs for this plane. I am going to go through receiving the plane, unpacking it, setting it up, and putting it to use. As a hand tool worker, I have become very dependent on my shooting board for many uses. It excels at cleaning up pieces that have been crosscut to get them square and smooth. I also use it for precise length sizing for multiple pieces. So it is in use on every project. That alone convinced me to purchase this plane. I ordered the plane by ...

Thats right SHAVINGS! i can’t wait until i have some time to properly hone and really giv...

Balance, precision, handling, control... Sounds like a sports car? It's a chisel!

Balance, precision, handling, control... Sounds like a sports car? It's a chisel!

Well, not just any chisel, a Lie-Nielson bevel edge socket chisel! Looking through the offerings at my local Woodcraft one evening, I spotted a beautiful set of chisels in a leather roll. Asking the salesman to open the case, I had a closer inspection. The feel was perfect, no uncomfortable bandings and they balance so well. The roll had 5 chisels in the set, with the smallest being 1/8”. Considering I do a considerable about of 1/8” inlay, I really liked these. I was taken aback ...

Quality Planes really are different

Quality Planes really are different

524 days ago by DouginVa | 18 comments »

I was parusing Craigslist today and a Lie Nielson Low Angle Adjustable Mouth Block Plane was posted…..and it said $100 or make an offer. The post couldn’t have been on there for more than a few minutes so I offered $80. The poster said Ok, but come down quickly if you can. I wrapped up what I was doing and called for the address and this woman obviously had no idea what she had or was selling. She said it was a gift to her husband who simply hasn’t even used it and doesn...

A little disappointed with Lie-Nielson an update

A little disappointed with Lie-Nielson an update

988 days ago by Indiana_Parrothead | 18 comments »

I did receive the chisels in January and have been using them now for about a year and could not be more happy with them. When I got them they were very sharp right out of the box, but I lapped the backs and sharpened them anyway. The backs were very flat and it did not take many passes over the stones to have a mirror finish on them. The two larger chisels both had a small nick on the bevel the same distance from the edge. It took a little honing to get them out as these are very hard steel....

Very Nice Dovetail Saw

Very Nice Dovetail Saw

2409 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 16 comments »

I love the feel of this saw. The grip is comfortable in my large hand. The saw has a nice “heavy” feel to it. The saw cuts straight and true. It has a rip tooth configuration, with a narrow set. The narrow set helps the saw cut straight, once your cut is started. Once I figured out how to start my cuts, with a light touch push stroke, cutting became very easy. Although, I still have some work to do on my dovetail joints :). www.lie-nielsen.com

Nice scraper but difficult sweet spot

Nice scraper but difficult sweet spot

1333 days ago by Chelios | 16 comments »

I got this scraper plane to see if I could get better results during surface prep for finishing. It cost $235 from the Lie Nielsen web page. The finish on the plane is flawless. It is a beauty and coming out of the box it created a lot of anticipation on what it was going to do for me. It has a very nice heft to it and a great blade. I honed the blade sharp like I do for all my planes and I started working with it. Right away I realized that this scraper was not going to be easy to ma...

Lie-Nielsen Customer Service

Lie-Nielsen Customer Service

1910 days ago by Treverk | 13 comments »

I wasn’t sure if this was the right place to post this, but I thought it might do… I have had the Low angle smoother since Christmas (love my wife) and have been quite pleased with it. The other day while taking it apart to sharpen, one of the retaining screws hit the shop floor never to be seen again. A quick and painlessly menu free call to Lie-Nielsen and the replacement screw was sent first class and arrived yesterday free of charge. Before this happened, I was seriously c...
