great for ad-hoc jigs

pics show just one example of using this product. I made this ad-hoc tapering jig for a project today in about 4 minutes, the rockler hold downs are great! as you can see i used one rockler and one cheap chinese knockoff hold down – big difference! the cheapo flexes and has a plastic insert that’s always getting sideways i will break this jig down now that i’m done cutting tapers for today (see pic below) and put the track and hold downs back into the clear plastic tube t...

If you've ever wanted to try a wheel marking gauge....

If you've ever wanted to try a wheel marking gauge....

I always wanted to try a wheel marking gauge. However, I never wanted to spend $30+ for a tool that I wasn’t sure I’d even like. I mean, a pencil seemed to do a fine job marking workpieces, so I couldn’t really justify buying a tool that I didn’t actually need. However, a few weeks ago, Rockler had these marked down to $7.50 with free shipping. It appeared to be fairly well made and had most of the features found on the expensive gauges. So I pulled the trigger. My th...

Taper jig for us lazy folks

Taper jig for us lazy folks

Got this when I was in the Cambridge Rockler store. I had been thinking about making my own but this one is only $15 and I couldn’t pass. It works as designed, both sides of the fence. Some specs from the Rockler site: Cut tapers up to 3’’ per foot/15º slope. Graduated metal scale makes it easy to cut tapers at desired angles. Easy to use and easy to adjust. Offers measurements in degrees and inches per foot of taper. I cut the the piece of red oak in the bottom of th...

Maybe round isn't such a good idea...

I just got this (for myself) for Christmas. Took it out of the package, took it to the shop, set it on the bench, turned away for something or other, and it rolled off the bench straight to the floor. Dinged up the marking wheel pretty good. It still makes a mark, but not as crisp as it should be. It’s my own fault for dropping it, but I’m thinking that the best designed tools shouldn’t roll, and that the brass body on this thing should have six or eight sides. It would...

Well you could get by without them. $15 a pair from Rockler. What the heck are they? They hold aux. fences and stopblocks to your existing rip fence, for crosscutting and dado operations where the blade would otherwise obliterate your existing fence. Just rip a piece of ply, melamine, or other stable stock, drill two holes for the clamps, and clamp away. The biesemeyer aux. fences with clamps are around $150. The only advantage I see is that their fence is exactly 1” thic...

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

890 days ago by DHS | 6 comments »

I purchased a sanding block for the first time yesterday. I had taken my mother to lunch on Sunday afternoon and then to reward myself for this good deed I visited the local Rockler Woodworking store and browsed the discount racks. I bought some sanding disks, a quart of Titebond III, some space balls, and then just for the heck of it, I purchased a rubber sanding block for $3.99. What a wonderful device. I don’t know why I’ve never used one before. Perhaps it was my abrasive high-school...

Sturdy lumber rack is easy to install

Right now this Rockler product (item 39227) is on sale for $20, normally $30, and as I’ve had my eye on it for a little while I decided to go for it and ordered three sets shortly before Christmas. I installed and loaded up all three sets within two hours this morning and am very pleased at the quality of the product. Each set includes two 24” tracks, six 14” shelf brackets and six screws. With my new magnetic studfinder (also reviewed recently) it was a piece of cake t...

Rockler customer service rocks

Rockler customer service rocks

A little history. About 5 years ago I bought a mini bench top router table from Rockler. After two moves and some mishaps the mdf subfences were ruined so I needed new ones. I didn’t want to make my own so I contacted Rockler to see if I could order these parts. Rockler answered my email promptly with the information that they didn’t make that size anymore but that the longer ones for their regular table would fit, but would stick out at the sides a bit. And they asked what m...

Rockler Trim Router Table

Rockler Trim Router Table

176 days ago by redryder | 6 comments »

I purchased this Trim Router Table last December. For me it has proved more useful than I expected. I can set it up pretty much anywhere I want. In the shop, outside or anywhere with power. It tears down as fast as it goes up. Two clamps and dust collection if you want. I am not a fan of hard edges on wood so I have used it mostly but not exclusively with a roundover bit attached. It is meant for smaller projects and not something like large panels. I compare it to my small band...
