Edited: Sturdy construction, odd warning

I purchased these last week when I thought I’d be fastening the tops to the nightstands this weekend. Well I screwed up the tops and now have a few more weeks of work(delayed until after holiday gifts are done). Anyways, I just received these fasteners in the mail yesterday and was all excited….until I read the back of the bags. I can’t remember the exact words since I dont have it in front of me right now but it goes something like this: Warning, materials used in thi...

Rockler Power Air Respirator

Rockler Power Air Respirator

2244 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 36 comments »

I wanted a respirator that I could wear all by itself. I didn’t want to contend with any head gear. I have used regular dust masks over the years, but after wearing them for awhile, it takes a lot more effort to breath.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~After seeing this one in Rockler I ordered one. It’s surprising how that little built in fan helps in your breathing, & it keeps your face cool. The fan is very quiet, & it runs on 4 AA batte...

Not a very good value

Not a very good value

I picked this up on sale from Rockler recently and put it together this weekend. First off, the box it comes in is very small. In fact, it looks tiny next to my 16 gal Ridgid vac. The Vortex comes in two halves allowing it to nest inside the carton. Clever packing. I was afraid it might leak at the joint, but it proved to be a nice tight fit. Assembly: Not hard at all. The directions are clear and well written, but… There are two connectors for the intake and out...

An EXCELLENT dust collection solution for a small shop

An EXCELLENT dust collection solution for a small shop

357 days ago by StumpyNubs | 30 comments »

We did a whole series of episodes on Blue Collar Woodworking about the importance of fine dust collection. Our solution was a homemade cyclone and six inch duct work. But I am also a realist. I know not everybody has the room or the budget for a system like that. A lot of shops are mobile and the dust collection has to be easy to swap between machines. So I did some testing and I think the Rockler Dust Right system is the best option for a number of reasons. The following three video revie...

Rockler Exotic Cutoffs 10 lbs. Assortment

Rockler Exotic Cutoffs 10 lbs. Assortment

1105 days ago by BreakingBoardom | 29 comments »

So with money being tight lately and starting to work on some smaller projects, I decided to take the plunge and buy a 10 lbs. box of assorted exotic cutoffs. The reviews on the Rockler site have been mixed with some happy and some unhappy. I guess what it probably boils down to is what your expectations are going in. I was expecting some small pieces of exotic species that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford separately. Others said the boxes were mostly Purpleheart and Padauk wh...

Cross cut sled

Cross cut sled

840 days ago by richgreer | 28 comments »

I’d always thought of a cross cut sled as a “nice to have – but not essential”. Then Rockler had a sale on this item ($99) and I said “why not”. This is a tool that raises the buy versus build question. I could probably have made a sled as nice as this one, but I am sure I would have spent at least $50 in materials and several hours of labor and I decided, in this case, to buy instead of build. I am very impressed by the overall quality of the ma...

Rockler's New Silicone Glue Brush is it worth the price?

Rockler's New Silicone Glue Brush is it worth the price?

Your shop is probably filled with tools or accessories that you use all the time but never really give them much thought, I know mine is. Today we will take a look at one of those tools; The glue brush. For years we have all used those little disposal acid brushes costing about 20 cents a piece. They work fine, so why change it? Well unless you spend the time washing them and picking out the dried glue bits, you throw them away just like I do. The first thing to consider is simply the cost...

Almost Magical

Almost Magical

The Rockler Locking Miter bit for 3/4” stock really impressed me. I took the time to joint and plane the stock to uniform thickness. I butted the two edges together (as if I was making a table top) to make sure the edges were straight. A few small test boards is all it took to get good fitting, tight joints. In fact I was surprised how snug the fit was. It creates a perfect friction fit, that will stay together – even before the glue is added. The interlocking parts seem to ...

Too much hassle for not enough stability

Too much hassle for not enough stability

1339 days ago by PurpLev | 21 comments »

I think Rockler Rocks! but with this one – they hit rock bottom. I have seen a friend having issues putting this mobile base together some time ago, and figured it’s not worth the hassle, but came upon one today myself. I picked up a shaper, and the guy (to which I am grateful) threw in this mobile base for free. The Bad!Out of the box (actually even before that) it is stated that you are responsible to providing the lumber which will size the mobile base – no worries,...
