Handplanes, which, where, how, and why do they give the best surface

Handplanes, which, where, how, and why do they give the best surface

I have recently started using the local library service and gotten a lot of reading material, from the taunton press, popular woodworking publishing, and others (japanese woodworking and such), and while some were a nice ‘introductory’ level material, others excelled at the level of knowledge, the ease to grasp it, and the relevance it had when trying to apply it to the everyday woodworking experience. This one was one of them! While some books bore you (me) with endless storie...

Wooden Boxes by Dennis Zongker

Wooden Boxes by Dennis Zongker

A nicely varied choice of boxes, with a thorough and detailed explanation of construction techniques and excellent presentation make this one of those best buys amongst books on the subject of boxmaking. Easy to follow and not in the slightest verbose. You could do worse than treat it as a reference book for the many useful techniques it describes. Pound for pound it is one of the most valuable books on box making in my collection. Well done sir.

I’ve had this DVD in my collection for a few years and today was the rainy day that I guess I’ve been saving it for.Doug Stowe goes into great detail on making several different styles of boxes as well as many different joints , machine set-ups , jigs, sleds , etc., etc.. Full of useful tips and nothing is rushed : )I enjoyed all 120 minutes of the DVD including his way of finishing the boxes. I forgot where I got this copy , but it says $19.95 US and $24.95 CAN on the label....

These aren't boxes... they're little wooden dream cubes!

A few months ago I got a copy of Dennis Zongker’s book and I’ve had a lot of time to digest it. I have to admit, I am just as in love with it now as I was when I first penned a review. So I decided to make a video… (Friend us on facebook, follow us on Twitter, and visit the Stumpy Store to help support the show!) The video is based on my original written review, which is transcribed below: When I first saw Dennis Zongker’s new book I thought, MAN that sucker’s shi...

So you want to be a Manly woodworker....

So you want to be a Manly woodworker....

I have been getting more interested in carving utilitarian items lately. I have been carving some spoons thinking of branching out some. I picked up this video to get a broader overview of working with green wood. First of all I would say this is an excellent video that exceeded all of my expectations. Jogge takes you through making a dough bowl and a wooden spoon from beginning to end. He demonstrates selection of materials and then takes you through every step demostrating tools, ...

Hand tool book review

Hand tool book review

I just finished this book by Popular Woodworking. Like most of their books, this is a group of articles previously published in the various magazines they have a hand in. If you are a Christopher Schwartz fan, you won’t be disappointed – there are 15 articles by Chris, not including the book’s introduction. Overall this is a very good read. The “chapters” are small enough to make it an easy “pick up when I have a minute” type of book. It’s pa...

A Must Have for Afficianatos

After reading the article (for the fourth time) “A Joiner’s Tool Chest” by Roy Underhill I had toolboxes and tool chests on my mind. So, when I was looking through the tool books at the library last night and happened across this book, I quickly snatched it up and glanced through it. Well, my wife had to remind me that the library hours were closing in and we needed to go because from the start I was engrossed! This is a great book. Especially, if you have any love of ...

The Bandsaw Book by Lonnie Bird

The Bandsaw Book by Lonnie Bird

Lonnie Bird talks about everything that should have been in you bandsaw’s owners manual. A great book for beginners (like me), walking me though the ins and outs of bandsaw setup, maintenance and use. I had this book open on my workbench last night trying to fold my first bandsaw blade back into a 3 loop fold (I used method #2 out of the book). Nicely laid out, plenty of high quality photo’s. This will be my go to resource for my bandsaw questions.

Why I Will Not Do Business With Taunton Ever Again

Why I Will Not Do Business With Taunton Ever Again

Here’s my experience-I’ll let everyone draw their own conclusions.I was a Fine Woodworking Magazine subscriber for 15yrs from 1995-2009, and enjoyed many of the issues in the earlier years. As my experience in woodworking grew, I found the quality of the articles, projects, advice, etc. in the magazine going downhill-particularly from 2006 onward. Purchased the DVD of all issues in 2010 and still refer to the earlier articles as they have challenging products, excellent advice, an...
