French Polishing. Finishing and restoring using traditional techniques. By Derek Jones

French Polishing. Finishing and restoring using traditional techniques. By Derek Jones

2 days ago by Jorge G. | 3 comments »

While I have done French polishing in the past, I would like to become more accomplished with it. I thought this book, given it’s name would be the one that would gain me that knowledge. Sadly this is not the case, if you are considering this book, do not waste your money! There are more in depth, better explained sources in the internet. I should have bought a Charles Neil book instead of this one. First, I do not know if it is because this is written by a British person, but the te...

Why I Will Not Do Business With Taunton Ever Again

Why I Will Not Do Business With Taunton Ever Again

Here’s my experience-I’ll let everyone draw their own conclusions.I was a Fine Woodworking Magazine subscriber for 15yrs from 1995-2009, and enjoyed many of the issues in the earlier years. As my experience in woodworking grew, I found the quality of the articles, projects, advice, etc. in the magazine going downhill-particularly from 2006 onward. Purchased the DVD of all issues in 2010 and still refer to the earlier articles as they have challenging products, excellent advice, an...

The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan (2008)

I just recently purchased a lathe and have been looking at videos and tutorials online about turning. I went to the library closest my office to see if they had any good turning books and found a DVD instead. The DVD is put out by Taunton for Fine Woodwoorking and is called “The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan.” http://www.amazon.com/New-Turning-Wood-Richard-Raffan/dp/1561589578/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1350571992&sr=1-1&keywords=turning+wood T...

Combining Power Tools and Planes

Combining Power Tools and Planes

597 days ago by WayneC | 7 comments »

This DVD is another one filmed in the mid 90s and makes the argument of why would would want to use handplanes to augment your power tool woodworking. In the video he uses modern manufacture planes from the 90s such as a crappy stanley #4 stanely, #92 and 60 1/2 block plane. I was not really in favor of his advise and techniques and feel the video is so so. I would recommend videos from KingShott, Schwarz, Charlesworth and perhaps Cosman over this video. Topics coveredTuning a #4Sh...

So you want to be a Manly woodworker....

I have been getting more interested in carving utilitarian items lately. I have been carving some spoons thinking of branching out some. I picked up this video to get a broader overview of working with green wood. First of all I would say this is an excellent video that exceeded all of my expectations. Jogge takes you through making a dough bowl and a wooden spoon from beginning to end. He demonstrates selection of materials and then takes you through every step demostrating tools, ...

The Bandsaw Book by Lonnie Bird

The Bandsaw Book by Lonnie Bird

Lonnie Bird talks about everything that should have been in you bandsaw’s owners manual. A great book for beginners (like me), walking me though the ins and outs of bandsaw setup, maintenance and use. I had this book open on my workbench last night trying to fold my first bandsaw blade back into a 3 loop fold (I used method #2 out of the book). Nicely laid out, plenty of high quality photo’s. This will be my go to resource for my bandsaw questions.

an excellent design book for intermediate woodworkers

an excellent design book for intermediate woodworkers

being that i’m a self taught woodworker, i love reading woodworking books. this one is to date, by far the best one i’ve come across. i picked it up at the local library, but i’m buying my own copy as soon as i take it back. there seem to be two types of books out there: step by step instructions/tutorials, and picture/gallery books. this book is the perfect balance for someone like myself that doesn’t build from plans and already has a grasp on the techniques invo...

A Must Have for Afficianatos

A Must Have for Afficianatos

After reading the article (for the fourth time) “A Joiner’s Tool Chest” by Roy Underhill I had toolboxes and tool chests on my mind. So, when I was looking through the tool books at the library last night and happened across this book, I quickly snatched it up and glanced through it. Well, my wife had to remind me that the library hours were closing in and we needed to go because from the start I was engrossed! This is a great book. Especially, if you have any love of ...

A great resource for both hand and power tool in woodworking

A great resource for both hand and power tool in woodworking

1398 days ago by Ben | 1 comment »

When I was in college I wanted to start building things out of wood. So I went to my library (Pickler Memorial at Truman State University) and this is what I found. It was actually a series of three books “Joinery”, “Shaping, Veneering, and Finishing”, and “FurnitureMaking.” It seemed like an older series, but it was all they had so I checked them out. What a great source of information! These books were fanatastic. Tage Frid takes you through everyst...

Handplanes, which, where, how, and why do they give the best surface

Handplanes, which, where, how, and why do they give the best surface

1571 days ago by PurpLev | 12 comments »

I have recently started using the local library service and gotten a lot of reading material, from the taunton press, popular woodworking publishing, and others (japanese woodworking and such), and while some were a nice ‘introductory’ level material, others excelled at the level of knowledge, the ease to grasp it, and the relevance it had when trying to apply it to the everyday woodworking experience. This one was one of them! While some books bore you (me) with endless storie...
