Satisfied Customer - Recommended Machine (but watch for missing components)

NOTE: First posted this review a few weeks ago; now updated with my experience adjusting tables for Coplanarity, and updating my overall take on the machine. Duration of ownership at time of this review – 3 months. Reason for purchasing this unit – Parallelogram design for longer beds than dovetail of same width; 6” wide and 55” long would fit in my relatively small shop and, additionally, be easier to maneuver to a downstairs basement (compared to an 8” machine). ...

Shaper Story

Shaper Story

12-29-2013 12:53 AM by soapmaker | 9 comments »

To review my story so far, I acquired an older grizzly shaper with only the 1/2 inch spindle. I ordered the other two. When I installed them they both had runout like a bent drill bit. I I initially thought the spindle cartridge may have some sort of issue after I installed the first set of spindles. I borrowed a spindle off of my work shaper and it lined up good with a runout of .004” So I took the first set of spindles and checked them on my work machine where they still didn’t improve. So...

Grizlly G0656X 8” Jointer with Spiral Cutterhead

Grizlly G0656X 8” Jointer with Spiral Cutterhead

Well, my lovely wife presented me an early Xmas present in November so I could Umm, make Xmas presents. so I ordered the Grizlly G0656X 8” Jointer with Spiral Cutterhead. I made a bunch of cutting boards so I ran a lot of walnut, Cherry and Maple through this jointer and it never missed a beat. I’m not going through all the hoopla of shipping/receiving and uncrating except to say it takes two to get that aircraft carrier of a cutter up on the stand. This beast weighs in at 600 pou...

G0555LANV 14" Deluxe Bandsaw - Anniversary Edition

G0555LANV 14" Deluxe Bandsaw - Anniversary Edition

12-21-2013 08:50 AM by Shozzy | 21 comments »

Today I received my Grizzly G0555LANV 14” Deluxe Bandsaw – Anniversary Edition, it is my first “real Bandsaw” so I don’t have much to compare it to, this is my first tool review and i am writing this approx an hour after assembling the machine with very little use. That being said you can easily tell when a tool is quality by the appearance, the materials its made of and how it fits together. This bandsaw nailed all three of those, as soon as i opened the box i...

My Early Christmas Present to Myself

My Early Christmas Present to Myself

12-17-2013 01:32 PM by Woodbum | 14 comments »

I recently purchased a new Grizzly G0604ZX jointer to replace an old 6” bench top jointer. This is my last upgrade to new tools from my old original shop tools that I have been acquiring since the mid 80’s. I am trying to get all of my major and most of the minor upgrades done before my retirement in 2 years when there will be no more checks coming in every 2 weeks. I wanted the 8” version, but a 76” fence just did not fit in my small shop footprint. Since I picked...

Excellent performance, great value

Excellent performance, great value

So, back in March or so of this year I was shopping for a new jointer to replace an old 6” Delta / Rockwell that was bought and subsequently sold on CL. After using the 6” for a while and learning its capabilities and limitations, I decided I wanted a larger machine. Ultimately, I decided I wanted a 8” jointer with a helical cutter head, as I work a lot with figured maple. Up here in Canada, we don’t have the abundant selection of woodworking machinery that’...

Grizzly GO555LX 14" Deluxe Bandsaw

Grizzly GO555LX 14" Deluxe Bandsaw

Well, I have had this band saw for several months now and I am in love with it. I love the cast iron wheels, rack and pinion upper blade guide adjustment, and a T-square style fence. Smooth operation, no vibration, cuts like butter (new blade). I have cut everything from pine to cherry and walnut and no bogging down, no hesitations. It’s a joy to use and a huge step up from my 9” band saw that I had. LOL! I haven’t tried to re-saw yet, but that day is coming soon. ? Assembly ...

Quick Review of a Great Little Cyclone!

Quick Review of a Great Little Cyclone!

11-26-2013 10:09 PM by WoodJitsu | 9 comments »

Like every other woodworker, I owned a Habor Freight 2HP dust collector. It served me well in its stock form, but I knew it was leaving lots of fines floating around my small shop and I needed to either upgrade it or buy something new. I looked at all the options with the filters, baffles, etc, but I came to the conclusion that for a few extra bucks (ok, more than a few) I could really upgrade. So I took the plunge and bought the Grizzly cyclone. My concern was the the CFM, I’ll add...

An obvious improvement over my Shop-Vac

An obvious improvement over my Shop-Vac

10-05-2013 12:49 AM by Kobra | 10 comments »

After using my shop-vac as my dust collector for several months, I finally broke down and purchased a real dust collector. Let’s be honest, using a shop-vac for a dust collection system is akin to using a weed trimmer to mow your lawn. Requirements – 1) I wanted a system with a relatively small footprint. Like most DIYers, lack of space is enemy #1. 2) Spend no more than $400. I couldn’t justify spending more money when woodworking is a hobby. 3) CFM greater than...

The Ultimate Bandsaw???Hmmmm.

The Ultimate Bandsaw???Hmmmm.

Well, I would have actually given this machine 4.5 stars but that is not an option. I no longer have this bandsaw but while I had it I did enjoy using it. I had a very early issue with the blade tension device but that was operator error and soon rectified by the helpful folks at Grizzly. My only complaint about this bandsaw is the crappy rubber tires. Any blade under a 1/2 inch just would not track well. I tried everything I could think of, checked that the wheels were coplanar, that there w...
