Great new spray gun

Great new spray gun

03-18-2010 06:20 AM by sawblade1 | 10 comments »

Last week I received my new spray gun from woodcraft and was very pleased with the quality out of the box it had a good weight to it but not to heavy, it came with a cleaning kit, extra filters, and all accessories for adjusting and removing nozzles and tips from the gun. But where this gun excelled at was at spraying after testing with water I decided to try spraying a water based clear cote to my surprise no cloud of over spray like you get with other HVLP guns and very little and do I ...

Close Enough for Woodworking

Close Enough for Woodworking

I picked this up at a local Woodcraft (Item #148454) for ~$32. Got it mostly to speed up set-ups on the router and table saw. As soon as I got it, I measured each block with my digital caliper. Each block measured within half a thousandth of spec, except for the 1/2” and the 1-2-3 block. The half inch block measures 0.502” by 0.506” and the 3” side of the 1-2-3 measures a few thousandths over, also. Maybe that’s too much for high precision machining, but it&...

WoodRiver #62 Low Angle Jack Plane

WoodRiver #62 Low Angle Jack Plane

I bought the WoodRiver #62 a few weeks ago and I have really enjoyed using it. Out of the box it requires a little tuning but only 30 minutes or so. The blades were not sharp at all and they were not flat either. Using DMT diamond stones coarse and fine then a leather strop the blades sharpened up quickly and hold an edge all day. The sides are square and the sole is reasonably flat. There was a slight hollow in the sole but I was able to remove it by running it along a 4”x36”...

Woodriver gets it right

Woodriver gets it right

I posted a poor review of Woodriver planes a couple of years ago. However Woodcraft has come out with a much improved version called the V3. Woodcraft had them on sale so I picked up a #4. Arguably it needed no tuning and with a quick honing could have been used right out of the box. I did however strip it down and tune it for my own compulsive reasons. The sole was very true and it hardly took five minutes to get it to within 1.5 thousands. The blade which is A2 steel was slightly ...

Great blades at a great price

Great blades at a great price

02-22-2013 06:15 PM by Chris Wright | 4 comments »

I build a lot of handplanes and when I was looking for an inexpensive high quality blade set I.came across there blades. Woodcraft’s house brand, they offer blades for the #3 (153917 $15.99), #4&5 (153918 $16.98) and the #6/7 (153919 $20.99). After using the V3 handplanes extensively, I was familiar with how well the blades preformed. They are ground at 25 degrees and require honing out of the packaging but the hold an edge well and are very flat. At almost an eighth of an inch thi...

Can't get better for the price

Can't get better for the price

After watching Rob Cosman’s videos on the new V3 planes and his videos on sharpening blades I decided to go get a Wood River #5 Jack Plane. As Rob says, the plane comes covered in thick oil to prevent rust but you can just take it off with some mineral spirits. All the adjustments were easy to make and everything moved smoothly. The sole was dead flat against my straight edge and you can’t beat the tolerances in the chip breaker and blade. All it takes is 10-20 minutes of setup an...

Wood River - Banana Planes

Wood River - Banana Planes

03-16-2010 05:00 AM by mcase | 20 comments »

I recently spent about an hour and half in Woodcraft examining Wood River planes. I went there to buy these planes. I went to purchase a #4, #5, and #6. The planes are very handsome and clearly copies of the Lie-Nielsen planes once carried at Woodcraft. They are very attractively packaged in nice wooden boxes. But before I went out the door I had the sales person (very helpful) open each box. I did this so I could examine each plane before I brought it home. Using a machinist ...

very good for the price

I had to spray some General Finshes Enduro-Var water base poly. Not really poly as it is water based. After thining with about 15 percent water and a couple healthy squirts of General Finishes dry time extender I got the results I needed. A smooth flat top coat. After drying I used Micro-mesh sanding pads. 1500 to 12000 grit.I still need to get some 1 micron polish from Micro-mesh to get that extra eye popping mirror like finish.29 gal Harbor Freight commpressor 7.3 cfm at 40 psi and 5.9 at 9...

Woodcraft's WoodRiver Mobile Base Kit

Woodcraft's WoodRiver Mobile Base Kit

I recently mounted my bandsaw on a mobile base using Woodcraft’s WoodRiver Universal Mobile Base Hardware Kit. I have used similar kits before, and generally like them. Some of the features of this kit are a considerable improvement over past versions, but one change confuses me, and made it difficult to decide on an overall rating. THE GOOD: The kit is based on user-supplied lumber, such as plywood. Previously, the steel corners were equipped to take only one piece of nominal 3/...

Great Bushing Set with Improved Case

Great Bushing Set with Improved Case

09-16-2011 11:37 PM by NiteWalker | 7 comments »

I bought one of these bushing sets way back before woodcraft rebranded all their in house products as woodriver. That set has performed flawlessly over the years. A few things I love about the set is the variety of included sizes, the fact that they’re brass and won’t work loose as easily as steel bushings can, and that all the rims of the guides protrude less than 1/4” so 1/4” template material can be used. I recently bought another set because they’re on ...
