New Woodriver #7 V3 Hand Plane

New Woodriver #7 V3 Hand Plane

06-06-2012 04:45 AM by KenBry | 33 comments »

This is my first Woodriver plane and I am impressed. I needed a #7 jointer plane because I am building a woodworkers bench. I already have a Stanley Bailey #7 but really wanted a tool with a stiffer blade than the stanley. I tried the IBC in my Stanley and had some issues. Unfortunatly when Stanley built their planes back in the day they didn’t stick to specs very well. I needed a plane that is going to take use and be able to take replacment parts when the time comes. So I went shoppin...

Woodriver gets it right

Woodriver gets it right

I posted a poor review of Woodriver planes a couple of years ago. However Woodcraft has come out with a much improved version called the V3. Woodcraft had them on sale so I picked up a #4. Arguably it needed no tuning and with a quick honing could have been used right out of the box. I did however strip it down and tune it for my own compulsive reasons. The sole was very true and it hardly took five minutes to get it to within 1.5 thousands. The blade which is A2 steel was slightly ...

Wood River - Banana Planes

Wood River - Banana Planes

I recently spent about an hour and half in Woodcraft examining Wood River planes. I went there to buy these planes. I went to purchase a #4, #5, and #6. The planes are very handsome and clearly copies of the Lie-Nielsen planes once carried at Woodcraft. They are very attractively packaged in nice wooden boxes. But before I went out the door I had the sales person (very helpful) open each box. I did this so I could examine each plane before I brought it home. Using a machinist ...

Had to Put it Back

Had to Put it Back

I always feel bad recommending a restaurant to a friend and then they change the chef or something and the foods horrible. This is sort of in the same vein. In the past, I highly recommended the Woodriver V3 planes. I own three Woodriver V3s , #4,#5, and #6, which are just fine. They ARE nice planes and I enjoy using them very much. However, I recently went to purchase a #3. I really wanted a #3 Woodriver, but I had to put it back. Turns out that whoever makes these planes ground ...

Woodriver Responds

Woodriver Responds

I posted a review of the Woodriver #3 a while back. In that review I was critical of the short chipbreaker and of the the lower-level Woodcraft customer service response to the problem. Well, I am happy to report that Woodcraft passed the complaint up the ladder and the higher ups corrected the problem. I now have received a Woodriver #3 with the new chip breaker of sufficient length. Like the three other Woodriver Planes I own it was absolutely flat and required no fettling. Just a...

Amazing Plane for the Price

Amazing Plane for the Price

Okay, I know there are an awful lot of you guys out there that sport the Lie-Nielsen and Veritas hand planes (drool) but I just cannot swing the budget that high right now. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t have quality! I just picked up a brand new WoodRiver #5 (V3) and this jack is sweeeeeeet. It’s replacing the #4 Groz smoother (hissss) that I got last year. I spent hours and hours rehabbing the brand new Groz to get it to the point where I could plane pine (of a...

WoodRiver #62 Low Angle Jack Plane

WoodRiver #62 Low Angle Jack Plane

I bought the WoodRiver #62 a few weeks ago and I have really enjoyed using it. Out of the box it requires a little tuning but only 30 minutes or so. The blades were not sharp at all and they were not flat either. Using DMT diamond stones coarse and fine then a leather strop the blades sharpened up quickly and hold an edge all day. The sides are square and the sole is reasonably flat. There was a slight hollow in the sole but I was able to remove it by running it along a 4”x36”...

WoodRiver Ultimate Cabinet Maker's Kit (planes)

WoodRiver Ultimate Cabinet Maker's Kit (planes)

I bought this kit about three years ago and have since used these planes on just about every project done since. I’ll split up the review into three parts- one for each plane in the set, then I’ll follow that up with general comments. #4 Smoother- This plane has been my go to plane since receiving the tools. Out of the box it definitely needed a honing and a good wipe down of the cosmoline covering the tool. The blade was nearly perfectly flat- didn’t take much work to br...

A Great Plane

A Great Plane

I bought this WoodRiver #6 at a Rob Cosman hand planing / dovetailing seminar. He was able to take one of these new out of the box, hone the blade, and produce a shaving about 3/10000” thick according to his micrometer. Most of us attending were impressed enough to buy one ourselves (cost about $150 at the time, though the sale has ended now). I try to follow his hand sharpening technique as well, and now I can get shavings from this plane almost as thin as he can. The first pictu...

Great new spray gun

Great new spray gun

03-18-2010 06:20 AM by sawblade1 | 10 comments »

Last week I received my new spray gun from woodcraft and was very pleased with the quality out of the box it had a good weight to it but not to heavy, it came with a cleaning kit, extra filters, and all accessories for adjusting and removing nozzles and tips from the gun. But where this gun excelled at was at spraying after testing with water I decided to try spraying a water based clear cote to my surprise no cloud of over spray like you get with other HVLP guns and very little and do I ...
