A full review post use, and swapping blade to a proper blade are going to be in the works, but I figured I would post this up now to give you guys a heads up. I may just edit this review when I am ready, who knows? This is NOT a usage, or long term review, this is just a fit and finish sort of thing. So if that is what you are interested in, read on… I picked up a Chicago Electric #98194 on Friday with a coupon I have been sitting on for a few months that expired on Sunday, so it ...

Chicago Electric Circular Saw Blade Sharpener

Chicago Electric Circular Saw Blade Sharpener

828 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 28 comments »

Addendum after 72 days: My old dewalt blade seen on the bench in the video below is what I sharpened next. I sharpened up pretty nicely. In fact I’m leaving it in the saw for a bed build and I’ve been working with Walnut, maple, and jatoba for this. So far the blade that I sharpened has been working really well. So well in fact that I think I’ll spruce up this sharpener with new knobs, and a few washers to help align things. I’m upping my rating a star. I’d se...

Great for occasional work- But plastic fence is a problem.

Great for occasional work- But plastic fence is a problem.

I almost never use biscuit joinery, but when the Chicago Electric Plate Joiner went on sale at Harbor Freight for $30 I bought one. Since nobody’s reviewed it yet, I thought I should give my observations. First of all, Harbor Freight is a wonderful store full of a LOT of great tools, some of very high quality and all for very low prices. But as a general rule I never buy their hand power tools. There’s just too much orange plastic! But I took a chance on this one and the result...

Chicago Electric Chainsaw Sharpener

Chicago Electric Chainsaw Sharpener

Got one of these for my birthday this year, just tried it out. For the money, I’d have to say it is a great value. A little play in the handle, but not any more than I’d expect for the price. Harbor Freight has them right now for just under $40. If you’re into tight tolerances, this isn’t the tool for you. But if you’re like me and don’t need exact tolerances, this is a really good buy, in my opinion.

Great Starting Sprayer

Great Starting Sprayer

I had been looking for a sprayer for my latest project, a blanket chest made with quarter saw white oak. I really wanted the finish to look good. I read a lot of good/great reviews on the Rockler sprayer. Then I found one at the new Harbor Freight in my town for about $50 less. I did a lot of research on the net, and found a review on another site that said the Rockler and Harbor Freight were the same machine. In looking at the pictures, they certainly look identical. I’ve heard/r...

I was looking for a cheap but effective option for cutting pen blanks since I don’t really have a workshop setup yet for the space nor the money for a large band-saw or table-saw even. So searching around on the internet I found this tiny little table-saw at Harbor Freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93211 Listed at $39.99 it didn’t seem like to bad a deal. It claims it can cut 3/4” and cuts at 14,000rpm which should be just fine...

A Whole Lot Cheaper for Almost the Same Quality

A Whole Lot Cheaper for Almost the Same Quality

I am not an expert carver. I did most of my carving with a rotary tool and longed to own one of those big power carvers like I saw at Woodcraft for $400. So when I saw one at Harbor Freight for 50 bucks you can imagine my excitement. Here’s the details… This is essentially a 1/4hp rotary tool. It is a motor that hangs from a wall bracket with a long flexable shaft with a little adjustable keyed chuck (like an drill) on the end that’ll accept any size carving bit. It’...

http://www.harborfreight.com/120-volt-circular-saw-blade-sharpener-96687.html Haven’t seen anybody review this, so I thought I’d give it a go. I posted it on my blog a while back, but nobody reads that. ;-) I’d been looking at this sharpener for years at HF. Sending my carbide blades out can get expensive so I needed a way to do the work myself. You can only block the teeth with a diamond card so many times… I picked it up on sale for $59. When I got it and...

Long term review, the good, and the bad.

Long term review, the good, and the bad.

184 days ago by dbhost | 13 comments »

I have had this saw for several years, and have used it quite extensively and I think I have found, and worked the bugs out of it, more or less. I have a write up on my blog of course at http://daves-workshop.blogspot.com/2014/02/chicago-electric-98194-12-sliding.html but to summarize… The blade and dust collection issues I noted early on hold as true today as they did then, which is why I built the dust hood. I don’t find the dust collection to be any worse than other sliders ...
