Steel City 1.5 HP Model 65200 Dust Collector

Steel City 1.5 HP Model 65200 Dust Collector

Yes, I do know that Steel City is no more, but I figure, why not review it anyway, as someone may still be interested in purchasing one while they are being clearanced out. To be clear, I just purchased this today, so my experience is very limited with it, so take it for what it’s worth. I was able to purchase it on clearance, so I got what I felt was a good deal. I’m not too worried about product support down the road, as i figure a dust collector is fairly simple and many par...

Review of Steel City Saw after a year

Review of Steel City Saw after a year

01-19-2015 03:59 PM by _Whitey | 6 comments »

Okay, Having owned my Steel City 35911G saw for about a year now I thought I would do a little follow-up. First off, I am happy with this saw. The fit and finish are acceptable, not too beefy so as to make it cumbersome, and not to chinsy to make it rickety, if that makes any sense. If you are a woodworker who likes everything to weigh as much as a WWII era tank, you may want to look elsewhere. The Granite definitely makes this saw heavy, but the rest of the saw is practical. The situation...

My entire history with this saw thus far.

My entire history with this saw thus far.

The first 2/3 of this will be copied and pasted from the first impressions of the saw and my 6 month review of it on the forums here. The last section will be new. If you have already read my first 2 posts about this or don’t feel like reading it skip to section 3/3. _1/3 Purchased a 35990G as a floor model from my local Steel City warehouse distributor. I figured I’d leave some initial thoughts of the saw as there was not much out there for information before I purchased. ...

Steel City 14 Inch Deluxe Brand 2 Speed Model 50114 (Initial Thoughts)

Steel City 14 Inch Deluxe Brand 2 Speed Model 50114 (Initial Thoughts)

Happy Birthday to me! I have been eyeing this band saw since the beginning of summer. My band saw previous to this was a black and decker 3 wheel 10 inch which is ok for small stuff and not ok for anything else. Anyway, after begging and pleading my wife (and finally agreeing to paint the house (grrrrrrrrrrrr)) I got a bandsaw. I got the saw yesterday and since I haven’t seen a review of this anywhere online (I looked everywhere) I decided to write in some quick thoughts to may...

Good planer so far

Good planer so far

09-02-2014 12:37 AM by Mimeda | 10 comments »

Hello everybody, this is my first review on this forum. I am a hobbyist woodworker, just working on small projects late at night or during weekends and learning on the way for the past 2-3 years. I started just with a bunch of hand tools and gradually evolved to buy a few indispensable tools. I bought this planer from Amazon, total price including shipping at my door in 2 days $299. As seen below it arrived in a sturdy box, no dents or scratches. After removing some styrofoam and pr...

If you are a hobby woodworker check this unit out.

This is a great planer, out of the box the unit performed very well very smooth surface and virtually no snipe. I adjusted the in feed and out feed tables now there is no snipe at all. The only slightly annoying thing is the out feed table will not fold up all the way with the dust collection port installed but I can live with that (I’m not even knocking any stars off). I was thinking about getting the Dewalt 735x but I wanted a segmented cutting head, and upgrading the Dewalt later was way o...

Good jointer for a small workshop

Good jointer for a small workshop

06-08-2013 05:47 PM by MoshupTrail | 26 comments »

Got this after waiting quite a while for one to come in.I have a 2-car garage and not enough room for a floor-standing jointer. So I had been looking for a good quality jointer that I could use in a small space. Out of the box. Not bad. An awful lot of plastic bags with parts, but once I got started it only took about 1/2 hour to assemble. The directions were pitiful. Perhaps from an older model? I gave up on them quickly. It’s not difficult to figure everything out. Th...

Steel City bandsaw blade - fooled me

Steel City bandsaw blade - fooled me

10-23-2012 03:33 PM by Tennessee | 8 comments »

On this site it seems like everyone has their favorite blade. To me, longevity is a biggy, as it is with most woodworkers. For a long time I struggled to find a good bandsaw blade, and it never seemed like I could get more than two months out of a blade. Months ago, back when I was still a one bandsaw shop, (so this has to be before my Grizzly, maybe five-six months ago?), I ordered four Steel City bandsaw blades, 93 1/2, 1/4” thick, 14TPI, from the Home Depot website. The order got m...

steel city mortising machine

steel city mortising machine

After doing some research found this one I looked over the specs and bought it..It has many of the features I wanted. Great tool. Assy went easy, all parts lined up easily a well machined. Comes with 4 chisels and allen wrench, chuck key. Works well has a wide base of 15.5 in with pull out work piece supports that go to 36 in w. I have used a jet before and this works much better. It has a tool holder in back that will hold 4 chisels and chuck key. Rubber rollers hold stock in plac...

a lot of oil

a lot of oil

06-11-2012 09:12 PM by rookiewooder | 3 comments »

I love my Steel City helical head planer. After reading many reviews on every portable planer, I went with Steel City. Reading some of the reviews on it, just about everyone said that it is was over protected with grease/oil.I took off all my blades and soaked in mineral spirits overnight and then used a toothbrush to clean the cylinder itself. Even after soaking, cleaning I still get some oil residue 6 months later, but slowly going away. Just be patient and clean as best you can after a...
