Great Video Well Worth the Price

Great Video Well Worth the Price

02-17-2013 03:30 PM by PittsburghTim | 6 comments »

I have purchased several woodworking videos in the past and have been generally pleased, but this one was very helpful. I knew a number of the things from reading other sources, but see it first hand takes some of the remaining mystery out of it for me. I like Chris’ sense of humor and value his opinion on tools and such. This video is great for someone who does not have much experience with tuning up a plane an nobody around to teach them. He takes you from the purchase of a used...

A good video for beginning handplaning

A good video for beginning handplaning

01-08-2012 02:27 AM by Tennwood | 1 comment »

I am just getting into hand planing and got this video for Christmas along with both Schwarz’s and Garrett Hack’s handplane books. I found the video well made and edited for an instructional video. Schwartz is articulate and obviously very knowledgeable about handplanes. The following quote from book seller site well summarizes the production of this video – “This DVD doesn’t simply spout off a new idiosyncratic way to work with bench planes. Instead Schwarz e...

DVD - The Last Word On Sharpening - Review

DVD - The Last Word On Sharpening - Review

12-28-2011 01:01 PM by Nazair | 2 comments »

In his opening comments Christopher Schwarz states how confusing the subject of sharpening is to new woodworkers, and that so many different methods, products and options on the market make it worse. This was exactly how I felt. The ninety minutes he spends talking while hands on in this DVD have been a great addition to my other research. I’ve spent many an hour online and browsing different books on this subject. He doesn’t single out any one method, but comments on the good...

The Schwarz's New Workbench Book

The Schwarz's New Workbench Book

11-10-2010 08:01 AM by Tadd | 9 comments »

Chris Schwarz’s new book provides plans and details for eight different workbenches. These benches range from a Roubo bench, in which Chris built almost entirely by hand, to a workbench assembled in 24 hours. Chris actually puts a couple paragraphs in the book explaining whether you actually need this book, which I think says something. I think all of these workbenches were described in articles in Popular Woodworking. So, you can probably find the plans for the workbenches elsewh...

Handplane Basics - A Better Way to Use Bench Planes

Handplane Basics - A Better Way to Use Bench Planes

I’ve written a review of the DVD Handplane Basics – A Better Way to Use Bench Planes by Christopher Schwarz. I highly recommend this if you are interested in learning more about bench planes and their use. My high rating is also based on my experience with the customer service at Popular Woodworking’s Woodworker’s Bookshop. Check out my full review here on my personal blog. As I post this (3/20/10) I noticed that it’s currently on sale. Not sure how long th...

Forgotten Hand Tools - DVD Review

Forgotten Hand Tools - DVD Review

10-25-2008 04:55 PM by Oscar | 2 comments »

This is a great DVD, although the title is, in my opinion, a little misleading. I would instead title this work, Forgotten Hand Tool Skills and Techniques. In this DVD, Schwarz focuses on three skills/techniques: (1) gimlets, hammers, and nails (i.e., using the correct type of nails as fasteners); (2) drawboring; and (3) handsawing (and using a shooting board). Schwarz discusses the history of each skill/technique and then explains the relevance of these skills/techniques to modern woodw...

Thinking about a thumpin' slab? This is your book!

Thinking about a thumpin' slab? This is your book!

I picked up this book recently after stumbling across a mention, then a review, then a bunch of raves. I chose to purchase the book directly from Lost Art Press, getting the Deluxe Edition (w/ CD). Their website didn’t want to have anything to do with my credit card, but that simply meant I had to deal directly with a real live and very courteous individual. The verdict on the purchasing experience: the folks at Lost Art Press are a pleasure to deal with. But, you may be wondering...

An Essential Read

An Essential Read

01-23-2008 08:48 AM by thewoodwhisperer | 9 comments »

**This review was pulled from a previous blog post on The Wood Whisperer Many of you may already know Chris Schwarz. He is an editor for Popular Woodworking Magazine and a self-confessed hand-tool and workbench enthusiast. His most recent work is a book called Workbenches, truly a modest title for what is contained within those 144 pages. Perhaps it was just great timing, since I am currently focusing on my hand tool skills, but this book really struck a chord with me. In fact, since my tw...

*Lots* of practical advice on --- wait for it --- building furniture with hand planes.

Like everything else I’ve ever read or seen from Chris Schwarz, this is chock full of practical advice and tricks, combined with a good bit of useful history. This video reviews some of the techniques used in ‘Course Medium and Fine’, but often takes the details a step or 2 deeper. Also, they differ in that this video generally assumes you begin with a board that’s been machine planed, and needs finishing. This video also covers the block plane extensively. Sharp...

Excellent primer on how to take advantage of your hand planes.

Excellent primer on how to take advantage of your hand planes.

Rather than re-summarize, I will simply agree with the first review about the content and utility, and note that while there’s no earth shattering information, it’s an excellent combination of common sense and history. The video covers plane usage, including the history, the mechanism and the results, as well as discussing plane irons and other details in moderate depth (for example, why some irons have more camber). I have 3 Schwarz videos, and this is probably my favorite. ...
