Restoring, Tuning & Using Classic Woodworking tools by Michael Dunbar256 pages.Published in 1989 This is an excellent book that I have had in my library for quite a while. It is currently out of print, so it has become quite expensive on the second hand market. You can find it on Amazon.com or half.com. The book is well written with lots of photographs to illustrate the author’s points. He covers information about why and how to select old tools and then goes in detail in s...

May, 2010this review is from the May, 2010 issue of our eMag The Ultimate Band Saw Book by our very own Donna Menke As always I am as fascinated by the author’s story as I am the book itself. Reading about Donna having the balance of a mother’s push to try new things along with a father’s guidance at doing a job well, to using art, math, and engineering skills to create the plans for the band saw boxes, well, I was hooked from the start! I knew the book was going to be...

Here is a book that no shop should be without. It’s called Workshop Math by Robert Scharff. I stumbled across this book years ago and have lost count of the number of copies I bought and given to my friends. This book is almost has important in the shop has fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and safety galsses. It’s a book that has been a benefit to me many times. It is not a woodworking book although it does contain some rather detailed explanations about carpentry and instrumen...

This is a very comprehensive book that shows how to make a Krenov style handplane and a lot more. The book is very clear and easy to read. It provides a lot of information on how planes work, sharpening, handplane use, how to use hand tools in general and also information on plane related accessories such as shooting boards. You have all of the information you need to create a handplane. The instructions are very clear and you should have all of the information you need to create one....

Interesting but very different than the norm...

Rodney Frost put together probably one of the most unusual project books I have ever seen. In it, you will not really find any detailed scale plans, nor projects that one would immediately think of or look to create. The beauty of this book is the openness to creativity and the ideas and techniques that really could do wonders for one’s own hand made toys. The book consists of items that I would consider more modern folk art than real toys. You do explore various cranks and gizmos th...

Choosing & Using Hand Tools

Choosing & Using Hand Tools

08-23-2011 02:51 AM by Don W | 6 comments »

I bought this book for a plane ride home. Its probably more of a beginners book, but the pictures alone are worth the read. Andy Rae does a pretty good job describing tool, their uses, where to find them and how to use them. He talks a little about the difference in buying new and used tools, and even gives some references for antique tool dealers. He has a section on sharpening. Its not the most comprehensive book I’ve ever read, but it is well illustrated and covers all differen...
