RIKON 10-351, 14” Professional Bandsaw

RIKON 10-351, 14” Professional Bandsaw

07-17-2015 08:30 PM by John Little | 12 comments »

I purchased this bandsaw to replace my 15+ year old Jet 14”, primarily to gain additional resaw capability and boy does this machine deliver. The 3 hp motor and 14” of resaw height gives me all the capability I could ever use. This is my first Rikon tool and I am impressed with everything about it so far. It is a beast weighing in at over 300 lbs (over 400 in shipping crate). It came well packed in a wooden crate and had no damage. Plan on several helpers to lift it off the pallet. I go...

The Rikon 10-345, 18 inch Bandsaw

It’s been about 6 weeks since I picked up my new saw so I’ve had some time to create saw dust with it. The Rikon 18 replaced a PC 14 which I’ve used for several years.First impressions. This saw is big, it’s heavy, so if you bring one home, have a friend or two handy. My saw was well packed in it’s shipping crate and had no damage. Assembly amounted to mounting the table, assembling the fence and mounting some hand wheels. Tuning is well covered in the owner...

Rikon 70-220 VSR

Rikon 70-220 VSR

After a couple of months of turning I think I can write a decent review of my new Midi Lathe. To date I’ve only been practicing turning some spindles and learning to work with the “Easy Lathe Tools”. I just purchased a pen kit and some bottle stoppers to make as soon as my fingers heal from the band saw incident. I stopped in my local Woodcraft store to look at lathes and when I saw this one I just fell in love with it. I was very surprised to see a Rikon lathe with virtuall...

problems but fast customer service

problems but fast customer service

I purchased a new Rikon 70-220VSR lathe on the 11th of November 2014 from Woodcraft. I turned a few pieces and the Rikon stopped working. I called customer service and they sent a new control board via two day mail. It took very little time to install and the lather worked like a charm. One caveat, you must stop the motor and wait for the speed indicator to clear prior to changing from forward to reverse of vice-verso. Cheers for the customer support for the fast identification and deliver...

Could have been so much better....

I will start this review with an email that I sent to the Rikon Tech support team about a week ago. “I have had my 70-220VSR lathe for about a month now. First let me say that the customer service has been great. The CS department has done what they need to do so far to take care of me. I originally ordered the lathe through Woodcraft. The lathe showed up in a timely fashion. After unboxing, I conducted a function check and noticed that the spindle was not spinning true. I remo...

Rikon Mortiser with XY Table

Rikon Mortiser with XY Table

I really wanted to give it 4 stars, but the inconsistency of the chuck and the weak motor left me wishing for more.If I had $1200 to burn … I’d prefer the large standing Powermatic mortiser, but unfortunately I have to make due with this $300 mortiser from Rikon. The table and clamping mechanism are great however. I made a video review on youtube… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3ta3OTK5Wg

Rikon 2HP Dust Collector with Jet Vortex Cone

Rikon 2HP Dust Collector with Jet Vortex Cone

For the longest time I would use my PSI DC1B-XL for my dust collection needs, but since I upgraded my jointer from a 6” to an 8” and my planer from my lunchbox to a new 3hp spiral cutter I have been buying my lumber in the rough from a local dealer. When I started to get my lumber this way I quickly realized I needed a bigger dust collector. I have read numerous reviews from this webpage and others about the HF 2hp dust collector so I grabbed my coupon and off I went to get my b...

The New Rikon 70-220 VDR Wood Working lathe

The New Rikon 70-220 VDR Wood Working lathe

After a couple of weeks of near full time turning I think I can write a decent review of my new Midi Lathe. To date I’ve turned a couple of bowls, several pens and some Christmas ornamentsTo tell the truth I stopped in my local Woodcraft store to look at the Jet 1221. I was very surprised to see a Rikon lathe with virtually identical specs. The 70-220 VSR is an electronically controlled variable speed lathe, with reverse. It advertises a 12 1/2 inch swing over the bed, a 1 hp motor, e...

Rikon 8" low speed bench grinder

Rikon 8" low speed bench grinder

02-16-2014 08:01 PM by ic3ss | 20 comments »

I bought this two days ago from Woodcraft as a replacement for the WoodRiver grinder that had so many problems that Woodcraft stopped carrying it. I just got it taken out of the box and plugged it in and it wouldn’t start. The right wheel contacted the wheel guard and stopped cold. I noticed how the guard was pushed over sideways so far that I couldn’t even turn the wheel past it by hand. I bent it back toward center a bit but it still rubs the wheel. But at least I could turn it ...

The full review, with more photos, is posted on my blog at http://www.artistryinwood.info/?p=291 The text of the review follows: Rikon 70-450 20” EVS Lathe Review First, a little background on how I landed on this lathe: I started out a little over five years ago on a little 10” benchtop model from Harbor Freight. That got me hooked on turning and I quickly realized I needed bigger gear. Within a few months I had upgraded to a used Jet 1442VS. The Jet is a 14” x 42” 1HP lathe that we...
