Rikon Drill Press and Orion Mortising Attachment

Rikon Drill Press and Orion Mortising Attachment

I went to the March Madness sale at Woodcraft today and came home with a new benchtop drill press and I grabbed up an Orion mortising attachment while I was there. I caught the eary bird part of the sale so I got an additional 5% off. The drill press retails at Woodcraft for $249.99. For the eary bird deal they take the additional 5% off after they apply the 10% discount so it ended up costing me about $214 before sales tax. It’s a 13” drill press with a 1/2 hp motor. Prett...

Rikon 2HP Dust Collector with Jet Vortex Cone

Rikon 2HP Dust Collector with Jet Vortex Cone

For the longest time I would use my PSI DC1B-XL for my dust collection needs, but since I upgraded my jointer from a 6” to an 8” and my planer from my lunchbox to a new 3hp spiral cutter I have been buying my lumber in the rough from a local dealer. When I started to get my lumber this way I quickly realized I needed a bigger dust collector. I have read numerous reviews from this webpage and others about the HF 2hp dust collector so I grabbed my coupon and off I went to get my b...

Rikon Mortiser with XY Table

Rikon Mortiser with XY Table

I really wanted to give it 4 stars, but the inconsistency of the chuck and the weak motor left me wishing for more.If I had $1200 to burn … I’d prefer the large standing Powermatic mortiser, but unfortunately I have to make due with this $300 mortiser from Rikon. The table and clamping mechanism are great however. I made a video review on youtube… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3ta3OTK5Wg

Early but so far so good.

Early but so far so good.

I do a lot of scroll saw work. I use thin stock for most of my projects. My old jet 12” bandsaw could only re-saw six inch stock. That always left me with the problem of either planing away valuable wood or trying to buy scroll saw ready wide boards. Neither option was appealing because of cost. I finally decided to upgrade the saw to something larger with more horse power. On my wish list were at least 12 inches of re-saw capability, 4 inch dust port and a reasonably powerful motor...

First Lathe

First Lathe

Let me start by getting the disclaimer out of the way. I am a novice when it comes to turning. I have turned a few chess sets and utility shop items in the past on borrowed lathes. I really love the meditative aspects of curling wood. So, when my wife was curious if we could possibly turn out some candle sticks (she was a professional candlemaker for 12 years) I rose to the occasion and did nothing to quell the creative brain storming. I lauded the benefits of the lathe and bombarded her wit...

Solid jointer

Solid jointer

I lucked into the closeout deal at Woodcraft where it was being sold for $150. Shipping was $75. As I live in an apartment in NYC, I had it delivered to my sister’s house as she has both a garage and an SUV I could borrow to get it to my shop which is in Pennsylvania. It was shipped the same day and it arrived in three business days. I was concerned about how I would get it out of the truck, but the shipper had a liftgate and it was no problem. The best news was that it fit in my car: ...

Could have been so much better....

Could have been so much better....

I will start this review with an email that I sent to the Rikon Tech support team about a week ago. “I have had my 70-220VSR lathe for about a month now. First let me say that the customer service has been great. The CS department has done what they need to do so far to take care of me. I originally ordered the lathe through Woodcraft. The lathe showed up in a timely fashion. After unboxing, I conducted a function check and noticed that the spindle was not spinning true. I remo...

Rikon 70-450 EVS Lathe Review: Solid Performance, Cost Saving Finish

The full review, with more photos, is posted on my blog at http://www.artistryinwood.info/?p=291 The text of the review follows: Rikon 70-450 20” EVS Lathe Review First, a little background on how I landed on this lathe: I started out a little over five years ago on a little 10” benchtop model from Harbor Freight. That got me hooked on turning and I quickly realized I needed bigger gear. Within a few months I had upgraded to a used Jet 1442VS. The Jet is a 14” x 42” 1HP lathe that we...

Nice Big 6 X 10" Belt/Disc Sander

Nice Big 6 X 10" Belt/Disc Sander

I bought this sander a few weeks ago at Woodcraft (Sacramento) after scouring all the competitors. I do a lot of decorative boxes, and my little Delta 4X6 was just too small for many of my projects. At $350,the Rikon wasn’t exactly cheap, but the other brands were hundreds more. I also looked at Harbor Freight’s model, but the crudeness and lack of any dust collection ruled it out for me.First of all, this puppy weighs in at 104 pounds, so it’s not like the little 4X6 tha...

Awesome Bang for the Buck

Awesome Bang for the Buck

09-10-2011 02:48 AM by DurocShark | 7 comments »

I’ve had several lathes over the years, starting with the cheap HF stamped steel lathe (no MT in the headstock??), then the hundred buck HF mini lathe (great for pens), a PSI TurnCrafter Pro (just OK), and then a Delta 70-700 with the Reeves drive (noisy!) I sold the Delta recently to make space in my “shoparage”. It was a nice lathe but took a LOT of space. And since I mostly do small turnings it didn’t make sense to keep tripping over it. Once I got that sold, I f...
