Narex Classic Bevel-Edge Chisels

Narex Classic Bevel-Edge Chisels

First off, let me qualify everything I say by mentioning that this is the only proper set of chisels I’ve owned, and I’m a newbie, sorta. I picked the Narex brand because FWW liked ‘em for the price. So did Wood Magazine, and a few blogs. I like them too, with a few noted shortfalls: -The metal is definitely NOT hardened to Rc59 in mine. Moderate prying when chopping (chip removal) will bend the tip out of plane with the back on the standard 25 degree bevel. Using a 30...

A very good set for the money

A very good set for the money

Redoing my shop and needed a new set of bench chisels, at least I talked myself into a new set. Paul Sellers had given the Narex Bench chisels a good word, so I ordered the Imperial set from Lee Valley. They arrived almost perfectly flat, and sharp enough that only a quick hone got them ready to work. Please realize that I am not doing this for a living, so my tools do not get the hard use of a 10 hour a day cabinet maker. But, i spend at least two full days a week in the shop. These thi...

Easy to sharpen but lack durability

Easy to sharpen but lack durability

There have been so many positive reviews about these chisels that I thought I’d chime in with my experience with them. I’ve had these chisels for about 6 months. They were my first set of “real” ie. not big box store chisels. I’d read many positive reviews about the Narex set, and they are very reasonably priced, so I took the plunge. Overall, the machining and finish of the chisels was excellent. It took very little effort to lap the backs flat. I keep them ...

I got these from Leevalley with the set of Narex Skewed chisels and this review is very similar to that review as my experience with both sets was almost the same , Up until now I was using bench chisels for mortising and it left a lot to be desired, when I saw that Narex had a decent set for an affordable amount, I decided to go for it and keep my bench chisels for other lighter purposes. First Impression:Taking them out of the package I was instantly surprised by the lightness of the han...

Chisels, Skewed, Subpar machining

Chisels, Skewed, Subpar machining

With the introductory price from LV and the free shipping, I decided to get this pair of skewed chisels to have something to reach into edges and corners better. I have read another review here stating that these were far from being flat out of the box, and for their price and knowing I can handle unflat metal I figured I’d give it a shot. First Impression:Taking them out of the package I was instantly surprised by the lightness of the handles. The handles are large and look massive,...

Lee Valley part 10S15.17 Pro’s Very inexpensive at the introductory price. Can take a very sharp edge.Comfortable handle, decent balance…reasonable workers. Con’sTons of lapping required, deep machining marks on back, not exactly flat. Overall, I’m okay with what I paid, and I did save myself the time of having to make skew chisels at the grinding wheel…but the machining marks were a lot of work. Once set up they are pretty good, but don’t exp...

Narex mortise Chisels Set of 5

Narex mortise Chisels Set of 5

I bought a five piece set of Narex mortise chisels and so far have had an opportunity to actual work with one. I’m quite pleased with the fit and finish and this steel quality which seems to be just right for my liking. Not too brittle, takes an edge quickly and seems to sharpen without leaving too much curl on the cutting-edge.(Rc59) They have a nice weight to them in a nice feel in my hand and the blades are definitely long enough to be able to hold the blade in alignment while gentl...
