Great Craigslist find, better options at retail price

Great Craigslist find, better options at retail price

Note this 4 star rating is not for a brand new 21758. With that said, this is actually a decent planer. I’ve been doing a lot of research lately and came across this one on craigslist. Actually I came across a Ridgid R4331 that I went to look at. The gentleman was extremely knowledgeable and had a very impressive and immaculate shop. He had the craftsman for sale as well and was only asking 100.00 with a brand new set of knives installed, and a set in the package still. He was kind enou...

Old belt disc sander but in great shape

Old belt disc sander but in great shape

This is a Craigslist find that I picked up a while ago. It was made in mid-late 1970’s I believe. I had to do just a little cleaning up on it but it ran fine, but it has a lot of vibration. It’s heavy, cast iron everything above the stand, but it does vibrate a lot. The bearings seem smooth enough, I wonder if I just need to replace the belt. Oh well, I’ve been using it on a project I’m doing for my daughter for the last few weeks and it works fine. For as old as it is...

Craftsman Universal Jig

Craftsman Universal Jig

Well I promised I wouldn’t buy something and post a review without using it… so much for that! I’m posting it because I bought it on clearance- 50% off. The cost was just under $16 bucks. So in case anyone wants to pick it up-i figured I’d post my initial impressions and hopefully there are some folks that have used one. I would have liked to have made my own jig, but for the price it was hard to beat. So far my initial impressions- 1. it’s made in Amer...

Craftman's newest 14" bandsaw

Craftman's newest 14" bandsaw

-My rating is mostly based on Price and build Quality. -These are first impressions only. I will report back after a while of use. -Notice from the pics, the similarities of the Professional model and regular. I’ve basically been out of the woodworking game this whole past year. I restored a Belsaw-Foley planer (craftsman branded) and not much else. Unfortunately, I sold the planer for peanuts, and I ended up selling a bunch of my other tools. I actually have done more to...

Some issues/ Gloat

Some issues/ Gloat

I just picked this up yesterday. I have been previously using the 10” version but have been looking to upgrade to a 14”. I have been very happy with the 10” and think everything about the fit, finish and performance is great (within its 1/3 hp capacity). I been watching craigslist (Chicago area) and good 14” saw at a good price have been fairly elusive. I stumbled upon searsoutlet.com which lists all their returns/refurbs/open box items. They had this one at 279.00 plu...

Excellent routers for the money (and in general for that matter)

Excellent routers for the money (and in general for that matter)

So I figured it was time to contribute to the review section of this site. Rather than review each router individually, I decided that since these share a lot of the same features, it might be a good idea to review them as a whole. I have four routers, all of which are current production models sold at Sears: 1) Craftsman Professional 14-amp, 2.5-hp Fixed/Plunge Base (in my router table)2) Craftsman 12-amp, 2-hp Fixed Base (for my dovetail jig)3) Craftsman 12.0 AMP/VS 2.0 HP Digital Plu...

Modest Accuracy, Flimsy Design, Dangerous Features

Modest Accuracy, Flimsy Design, Dangerous Features

I wrote this review for Epinions in 2004 and felt that, as Sears is still selling the saw, it is still relevant. ProsOutfeed extension ConsExtremely unsafe saw. This is an avoidable kickback waiting to happen. The Bottom LineIf you buy this saw, you will end up buying another saw in a very short period of time. I was given this saw as a gift. It was a thoughtful gift and I appreciated the sentiment….however… Saw Specs from Sears: 15-amp direct drive ball bearing...

Fantastic 110v Tablesaw

Fantastic 110v Tablesaw

I’ve had this saw for just over a year now and love it. The saw has plenty of power and is very accurate. Repeatable cuts are a breeze as long as you don’t need more that 25” of capacity. This being my only complaint about it. The saw itself is smooth with no noticeable vibration even with my 8” stacked Dado installed. I have ripped long pieces of Red Oak strips for face frames using this with a pretty generous feed rate and no noticeable bogging down in the motor. I ...

So-So Entry-Level Bandsaw

So-So Entry-Level Bandsaw

02-29-2008 09:17 AM by Hawgnutz | 6 comments »

This bandsaw looked really good on paper with bearing guides, 7” resaw capability, and “adjustable” fence. Well, after all that hype dissapeared, it turned out to be only a so-so machine! I am dissapointed and wished i had saved my money and bought a Jet, Rikkon, or even a Grizzly! Within 4 months of very sporadic use, one of the bearings siezed on me. (Thank God I bought the extended warranty!) The service tech ordered set for me, but it still has a funny sound when ...

Craftsman 12" Bandsaw

Craftsman 12" Bandsaw

This is everything you could expect from 12” saw. It is manufactured by the same factory that makes Rikon saws. It has good power, 3/4 horse; capacity, 7”; and can be adjusted to cut pretty straight. The guides work nice and can be adjusted up tight. The factory fence is junk. I built one to use with the factory front rail and it works just fine. I’m using a 1/2” 3 tooth blade and have my fence set for about 1/8” drift from front to back. The trunion can be adju...
