No more aching thumbs

No more aching thumbs

02-29-2008 07:18 PM by MrWoody | 6 comments »

I received this last Christmas and hadn’t used it.As anyone who has used a scraper over an extended period of time can attest your thumbs become painful. This morning I needed to do a very small bit of scraping but I have a calcium growth that is interfering with the muscle in my thumb making using it for even small things very painful.I opened a drawer and my scraper holder was sitting there and even had a scraper in it ready to go.This thing works. I won’t be doing anymore scrapi...

Great Small Plane - Like a #3

Great Small Plane - Like a #3

02-24-2008 02:44 AM by RickH | 10 comments »

The tool I have owned for about a month is the Lee Valley-Veritas Low Angle Block plane, with optional rear vertical tote and wooden front knob. I originally bought in order to have a really high quality block plane, and decided to order the optional rear handle and front wooden knob in case I wanted to use this plane that way. On it’s own this LA plane is a fantastic tool:> Has adjustable front mouth to fine tune / optimize shaving control in difficult woods.> Very comfortable to...

Not impressed with this vise

Not impressed with this vise

02-12-2008 05:19 AM by Mike Lingenfelter | 5 comments »

I have bought several products from Lee Valley/Veritras, and I have been very happy with them. So, I expected a lot from them, when I bought this vise. For what I paid for this bench vise, I’m not that impressed. I took the picture for this review showing how the handles can get out of alignment. The problem is that the set-screws that lock the large screw and handle together are undersized. The use of set-screws I feel is the real flaw. The friction from a couple set-screws isn&#...

Oh the joys of smooooth wood

Oh the joys of smooooth wood

This is a review that I posted a few months ago, but I thought that as long as we were going to have a “Review” section on the Forum that it should be here. The Veritas Bevel-Up Smoother Plane has added a whole new level to my woodworking projects. This is my first new plane and it is now my favorite. Right out of the box it was cutting wood as smooth as glass. I have since sharpened it and honed it and the cuts are even smoother. I hardly use sandpaper for my smaller proje...

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane

01-24-2008 02:16 AM by TheGravedigger | 13 comments »

Every now and then you stumble upon a tool that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it. For me, that was the shoulder plane. My present workbench base project was going to require 28 large mortise and tenon joints, and practice joints showed me that fitting was going to be difficult. I had tried a combination of block plane and chisel to clean up the tenon cheeks and shoulders, but the intersection of the shoulder and cheek kept causing me problems. The shoulder plane seemed like the...

Average Marking Gauge

Average Marking Gauge

01-23-2008 05:17 AM by Mike Lingenfelter | 6 comments »

I bought this marking gauge, because I thought it was better deal than the Tite-Mark. I was really disappointed with the the Micro-Adjustment on the Veritas. It requires you to use both hands to adjust the gauge. The instructions even tell you that you have to use both hands. Once adjusted the gauge works well and is accurate. If you want to buy Veritas, I suggest buying their standard marking gauge and save a few more bucks.

Simplicity with Perfection

Simplicity with Perfection

One of the first purchases I made was a Veritas sharpening jig. I had been researching woodworking for several years before buying a single tool while I attended MTU. One thing I noticed time and time again was the fact that tools must be sharp. Beyond sharp they must be properly sharp, with a proper angle, back bevel and micro bevel! After much intimidation about the whole process I decided to pick up the Veritas jig. I purchased it in the full kit with an included waterstone to get me go...

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

01-13-2008 05:40 PM by mot | 16 comments »

Hi Folks, As promised, a quick tour of the Veritas Mk.II Sharpening System. In the video I seem to use back bevel and micro bevel interchangeably. This is a mistake and is due to doing these videos at 1am when I should be ”sawing logs,” in bed. However, here it is… Cheers!
