It was shades of "A Christmas Story"

It was shades of "A Christmas Story"

Anyone who has ever seen the movie “A Christmas Story” knows the elation of discovering that you had won a major prize. I have not had a new tool infiltrate my shop in a very long time. It would be even longer had I not won this plane from the Wood Talk Online podcast—thanks Marc and Matt. See, folks, if you aren’t listening to this podcast, YOU SHOULD BE! Even a guy who never wins a thing can win something over-the-top cool! Okay: on to the plane (thank God it ...

Table works great though installation is finicky

Table works great though installation is finicky

09-30-2008 06:04 PM by JLYoung | 8 comments »

I ordered this router table insert plate on a Thursday afternoon and received it on Monday afternoon which I think is an excellent delivery time. The shipment arrived well packaged with everything in it. The instructions to install this thing are very detailed and laid out in a logical step by step manner, which though very complex and daunting upon first review, became quite logical once you take the time to follow the instruction procedure. It took me quite a bit of time to get this plat...

Be careful when using this product

Be careful when using this product

Be careful when using this product because it’ll help you get your blades so sharp you could cut yourself by holding them by the handle… This tool is remarkably simple to use and accurate. I especially like the quick micro-bevel setup. If you are not sharpening blades on a regular bases so that you are comfortable holding them at the precise angel you want them while sharpening – this guide will double and triple the value of your blade! I am the weekend warrior, and a...

A fun joinery plane

A fun joinery plane

04-30-2008 06:23 AM by johnjoiner | 14 comments »

First off, I’ll point out that I have nothing to compare this to. I have never used any other plow plane, and have little experience with any other kinds of joinery planes. This is easy and fun to use. No tools are needed to do anything on this. Blade removal and all adjustments are toolless. The only thing I can think of to complain about is access to some of the knobs. I’d say I have average sized hands and fairly dexterous fingers. But I had trouble getting at the knob...

Detail Chisels from Lee Valley Tools

Detail Chisels from Lee Valley Tools

03-01-2008 02:10 AM by tomfidgen | 7 comments »

I first purchased the set of five Detail Chisels from Lee Valley Tools a little over a year ago and can say I’ve used them on an almost daily basis ever since. My first impression when they arrived via Mail-order was the size. They’re small, extremely light and almost hobby like. Being used to chopping out mortises and cutting dovetails with heavier European style chisels, I decided to give the Detail Chisels a try and was pleasantly surprised by what I discovered. Using Chisels with only han...

Great Small In-Your-Hand Plane

Great Small In-Your-Hand Plane

02-29-2008 11:19 PM by RickH | 3 comments »

Owned this Veritas Apron plane for several weeks now, and like the other Veritas planes I have I found it to be extremely well made and a joy to use. This is one of the smallest I have in their line up, with only a 1 1/4” wide low angle, bevel up blade iron. It has a 5-1/2” x 1-3/4” ductile cast iron body for durability, and their great combination blade depth and blade angle adjuster. It is very comfortable to hold in your hand, and cuts very nicely. Ready to go rig...

No more aching thumbs

No more aching thumbs

02-29-2008 07:18 PM by MrWoody | 6 comments »

I received this last Christmas and hadn’t used it.As anyone who has used a scraper over an extended period of time can attest your thumbs become painful. This morning I needed to do a very small bit of scraping but I have a calcium growth that is interfering with the muscle in my thumb making using it for even small things very painful.I opened a drawer and my scraper holder was sitting there and even had a scraper in it ready to go.This thing works. I won’t be doing anymore scrapi...

Great Small Plane - Like a #3

Great Small Plane - Like a #3

The tool I have owned for about a month is the Lee Valley-Veritas Low Angle Block plane, with optional rear vertical tote and wooden front knob. I originally bought in order to have a really high quality block plane, and decided to order the optional rear handle and front wooden knob in case I wanted to use this plane that way. On it’s own this LA plane is a fantastic tool:> Has adjustable front mouth to fine tune / optimize shaving control in difficult woods.> Very comfortable to...

Not impressed with this vise

Not impressed with this vise

02-12-2008 05:19 AM by Mike Lingenfelter | 6 comments »

I have bought several products from Lee Valley/Veritras, and I have been very happy with them. So, I expected a lot from them, when I bought this vise. For what I paid for this bench vise, I’m not that impressed. I took the picture for this review showing how the handles can get out of alignment. The problem is that the set-screws that lock the large screw and handle together are undersized. The use of set-screws I feel is the real flaw. The friction from a couple set-screws isn&#...
