I just got this plane last week and put it through it’s paces. One thing I noticed right away is that thick toe! The picture in the review is the BU Jointer next to the jack. The jack’s toe is very thick because the entire front area adjusts (see picture). In the jointer, only a small area in front of the mouth adjusts. In the jointer review, I complained about the uncomfortable tote, but for some reason, I don’t notice it as much with the jack. I think this may part...

Great plane, but uncomfortable tote

Great plane, but uncomfortable tote

I have had this plane for about 4 months. I originally bought it because I wanted a premium jointer plane, but the other ones (from LN) were much more expensive. Actually, when I bought this, I did not know that LN also made bevel up planes. On this plane, I find the adjuster a little hard to use. The adjuster controls both the lateral position, as well as the depth, but when I adjust the depth, sometimes, I’ll accidentally change the lateral position. It’s not too bad thou...

Veritas 38" Aluminum Straightedge

Veritas 38" Aluminum Straightedge

1085 days ago by TheGman | 9 comments »

I just purchased the VERITAS 38” Aluminum Straightedge from Lee Valley. The straightedge was shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube that I’ll continue to use as a place to store the straightedge to prevent any damage in the shop. I had a very good first impression once I removed the straightedge from the packaging. It has a very nice finish, which looks great and feels nice in your hand. Its contour makes it very easy to grip and handle. To check the straightness of the straight...

Truly a masterpiece of a hand plane

Truly a masterpiece of a hand plane

As you probably expect, I’m going to echo everyone else’s comments on this plane. I have to admit this is my first Veritas hand plane. Like most of you, I was hesitant to pay the hefty price tag but I finally bought it after oogling it for the past several years. During that time, I tuned up my fair share of two jack planes, two smoothers, and two block planes from ebay. They were a pain in the butt to tune up but I learned the inner workings of how a hand plane performs. Mos...

Tool Review - Veritas Set-Up Blocks

Veritas Set-Up Blocks(ed. note: This is a companion post from www.randallprice.com).For the first tool review on www.randallprice.com I’ve chosen a one that is by far the of the most often used tools in my shop and one that has raised the accuracy and precision of my work to a new level – VeritasĀ® Set-Up Blocks. As you may have already found, transferring measurements is a much more accurate method of set up than taking a measurement from a rule. This is where the Veritas set-u...

Had this now for several months. I have all three plane blades which come in different angles. No matter the wood I am usually able to achieve a good finish.

Tuning up

Tuning up

1158 days ago by boatlark | 1 comment »

Some months ago I was given a Veritas scraping plane as a present. As is almost always the case with Veritas this tool worked right from the box. As I’d no real project to test it on I spend some time trying to work out how to get it tuned and working really well. Despite the comprehensive intstructions I struggled to get it to cut cleanly until I did away with the ‘hook’ on the blade. With the back of the blade lapped and polished and a good finish to the 45 degree bevel...

Veritas Router Plane

Veritas Router Plane

My wife recently surprised me with a Veritas Router Plane and Router Plane Fence. She knows that I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to new tools. I have always wanted a router plane but only had one occasion to even use one, it was a class that Marc Spagnuolo (The Wood Whisperer) was giving at the Highland Hardware Store here in Atlanta. I loved the tool and immediately thought of a thousand used for it but only added it to my wish list. My wife always keeps a few tool mag...

Veritas Jointer Plane

Veritas Jointer Plane

(you can click the picture to go to Lee-Valley’s web site and read more if you so desire.) With Veritas I expect a good quality, mid-range tool and that’s exactly what I got. Like a kid at Christmas, I had to take a few swipes with it last night right out of the box. It did ok out of the box. Tonight I honed the blade and started getting her setup. The blade, the O1 version, was not as flat as I would have expected so I had to spend a good amount of time getting the back f...

Veritas Router Plane - 2 Thumbs Up

Veritas Router Plane - 2 Thumbs Up

I got the Veritas Router Plane as a gift from my (favorite) aunt so I have only had a few days to try it out but so far its’ really awesome. The fit and finish is excellent except that I spent maybe half an hour sanding the knobs and finishing it with oil but that’s just a personal preference.Honing the blades didn’t take too long except that the 1/2” straight blade had a small ding in it so I had to grind it out (an extra 20 minutes of so). But the other blades only t...
