New Veritas BU LAJ..........+ BU Vs BD

New Veritas BU LAJ..........+ BU Vs BD

I’ve had the Veritas BU LAJ for about a month now and have had the opportunity to give it a pretty good work out with a couple of projects. I pretty much agree with all the other praises of this very excellent tool, and since mine looks like all the others out there I found no need for pictures, but the forum forces you to post at least one. Swift shipping, well pkg’d, arrived unharmed Finish – agree with everyone else – very high. I will say this area means the...

Veritas Prairie Dogs

Veritas Prairie Dogs

So I snuck one of the pair out of the Christmas pile and installed it my bench yesterday. There’s been a blind hole just in front of my vice for years, where there used to be one of those zinc bench stops that you screw up and down..it broke, did some filling and just left a 3/4 hole for regular dogs. This required me to put a dowel in the bottom of the hole to shorten the depth for the new springy guy.Install done, works great, cheap and once again I have a dedicated dog to match the on...

Veritas Bevel Up Jointer Plane

Veritas Bevel Up Jointer Plane

609 days ago by jasondain | 8 comments »

Over the past month or so, I have been working on a Benchcrafted Split Top Roubo workbench (more on that in later posts). At this point, I’m in the home stretch flattening the top and I had bought this plane in anticipation of using it for flattening the top of the bench once it was ready. I have built other projects in the past where I could have used this but used my Bevel-up smoother for the task instead (I know, not technically for the purpose but it worked fine). I spent a few h...

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

There are things you can do with a scraper that would defeat even the finest of hand planes. The micro geometry of their cut produces a Type II shaving, yielding a perfect surface even going fully against interlocked grain or over knots. I use a variety of scrapers and for spot work nothing beats a card type or even an ordinary paint scraper. One problem with these types is that they will follow any undulations on the existing surface as they have no registration (sole). For larger wor...

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

First off, I will not profess to be an expert on chisels, i do not have a toolchest full of Lie-Nielsens for which to compare, so I will give you an honest opinion based on what i do know. Not wildly impressed by the packaging, however, it is utilitarian, and a decent storage box for the chisel until it finds a new home in the tool cabinet that i’m working on. The chisel comes with a wax protector on the sharp end, the metal was all coated in a light coat of oil that was easily remov...

Very handy workbench accessory

Very handy workbench accessory

I purchased the Veritas Planing Stop from Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=69837&cat=1,41637) about a month ago. I’d had a planing stop I made myself, but I managed to crack it, so I decided to give this one a try. The stop is about 10 in wide and a little over 1 in deep. It has 2 metal posts that fit into standard 3/4 in dog holes on your workbench. The posts slide along the bottom of the stop in a T track. I have dog holes in 2 patterns on my bench: para...

Veritas dovetail saw (14 TPI rip)

Veritas dovetail saw (14 TPI rip)

663 days ago by Purrmaster | 16 comments »

I’ve had this saw for a few months now. I picked it up at Woodcraft after bashing my head against the wall with some other saws that were dubbed dovetail saws. The saw I am talking about specifically is the 14 teeth per inch saw with a rip cutting profile. The bottom line is: This is a great saw. It cuts smoothly and cleanly. And quickly. It’s easier to saw to a line with this saw than any other saw I’ve used. The teeth are sharp and set correctly. It’s a ...

Hello. Available separately is a handle kit which allows you to make custom handles. Flat Spokeshave First ImpressionsMy first impressions opening the box and pulling out the shave was the weight of the tool. It has substantially more heft than my old Stanley #51. This ...

Anyone looking for a block plane based strictly on performance need not read any further. There are any number of tools that will do pretty much as well as this one minus the heart attack price, including my standby for the last 30 years, the Stanley 9 1/2. For it’s mostly the iron inside and the angle and sharpness you give to it that does the work. Once you’re set, you’re set. Having said that, there are some marvelous features to this tool that make it shine well abov...

This is a short pictorial on setting up the Small Plow to cut T&Gs. This is a new-to-me plane, and I took a few pics as I was working out the kinks and having a little play. I hope this helps some of you. Link: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolReviews/AccessoryBladesfortheVeritasSmallPlow.html Regards from Perth Derek
