Veritas Brass Bench Dogs

Veritas Brass Bench Dogs

02-07-2013 02:42 PM by Mauricio | 11 comments »

I have only used these dogs for a couple of days and so far I am very impressed. I was one of those that said, bahhha I don’t need to spend $30 bucks on something I can make out of wood. But, I wanted to add some bling to my bench and reward myself for accomplishing my bench build. What sold me was going to Highland Woodworking, opening a box and inspecting a pair of these dogs and feeling the gripping face. There is a texture there that is not entirely apparent by looking at them. Besi...

Veritas Router Plane

Veritas Router Plane

I bought this a while ago but have been too busy to sit down and use it. For my last project I had to make a couple of grooves for a shelf and decided that this was a good time to give this a try. To start, I marked out where I wanted the groove to be on a piece of scrap, cut the marks a little deeper with a bench chisel to establish the groove and reduce the possible tear out before it happened. Using the adjustment, I took very little off on each pass. This thing worked like a dream. ...

Veritas Low-Angle Jack disappointment :(

Veritas Low-Angle Jack disappointment :(

I’ve been looking for a new jack plane to replace the turn of the century Stanley 5 1/2 that i’ve been working with for a long while (For sale btw, if anyone is interested).. Finally decided on the Veritas Low Angle Jack.. Basically the options were the LN 62, the Veritas Low-angle jack, a LN #5 or a wood river #5. I didn’t love the price of the LN #5 and, while i’m happy with my other wood river, I wanted to try one of the low-angle jacks since so many people rave ...

Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane

Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane

01-06-2013 12:55 PM by BigDawg | 8 comments »

I am not surprised at how well refined this plane is. The sole is perfectly square to the sides and the blade is perfectly ground to just barely hang over the edge of the rabbet hole. The blade is extremely easy to flatten and sharpen and I had the plane up and running in about 15 minutes after I protected the metal surfaces with CRC 3-36 spray lubricant. Features First of all, I have tried both the medium and large shoulder plane, but I ultimately bought the medium shoulder plane becau...

New Veritas BU LAJ..........+ BU Vs BD

New Veritas BU LAJ..........+ BU Vs BD

I’ve had the Veritas BU LAJ for about a month now and have had the opportunity to give it a pretty good work out with a couple of projects. I pretty much agree with all the other praises of this very excellent tool, and since mine looks like all the others out there I found no need for pictures, but the forum forces you to post at least one. Swift shipping, well pkg’d, arrived unharmed Finish – agree with everyone else – very high. I will say this area means the...

So I snuck one of the pair out of the Christmas pile and installed it my bench yesterday. There’s been a blind hole just in front of my vice for years, where there used to be one of those zinc bench stops that you screw up and down..it broke, did some filling and just left a 3/4 hole for regular dogs. This required me to put a dowel in the bottom of the hole to shorten the depth for the new springy guy.Install done, works great, cheap and once again I have a dedicated dog to match the on...

Veritas Bevel Up Jointer Plane

Veritas Bevel Up Jointer Plane

Over the past month or so, I have been working on a Benchcrafted Split Top Roubo workbench (more on that in later posts). At this point, I’m in the home stretch flattening the top and I had bought this plane in anticipation of using it for flattening the top of the bench once it was ready. I have built other projects in the past where I could have used this but used my Bevel-up smoother for the task instead (I know, not technically for the purpose but it worked fine). I spent a few h...

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

There are things you can do with a scraper that would defeat even the finest of hand planes. The micro geometry of their cut produces a Type II shaving, yielding a perfect surface even going fully against interlocked grain or over knots. I use a variety of scrapers and for spot work nothing beats a card type or even an ordinary paint scraper. One problem with these types is that they will follow any undulations on the existing surface as they have no registration (sole). For larger wor...

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

First off, I will not profess to be an expert on chisels, i do not have a toolchest full of Lie-Nielsens for which to compare, so I will give you an honest opinion based on what i do know. Not wildly impressed by the packaging, however, it is utilitarian, and a decent storage box for the chisel until it finds a new home in the tool cabinet that i’m working on. The chisel comes with a wax protector on the sharp end, the metal was all coated in a light coat of oil that was easily remov...

Very handy workbench accessory

Very handy workbench accessory

I purchased the Veritas Planing Stop from Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=69837&cat=1,41637) about a month ago. I’d had a planing stop I made myself, but I managed to crack it, so I decided to give this one a try. The stop is about 10 in wide and a little over 1 in deep. It has 2 metal posts that fit into standard 3/4 in dog holes on your workbench. The posts slide along the bottom of the stop in a T track. I have dog holes in 2 patterns on my bench: para...
