My first attempt at using the Veritas guide. I could have filled in some of the chips with sawdust and glue but figured since I’m just practicing I’ll let it go. Here’s what I found/prefer. I like to use the guide to about 3/4 the cut, remove the guide and finish using the cut slot only. That way I can better see the line to stop at. Let the saw do the work and add no pressure. I only used sharp pencil marks, cut inside the line of the waste side and made sure the fit was tight. I pared accor...

Veritas Cabinet Scraper

Veritas Cabinet Scraper

Is it weird that the whole time I was using my new Veritas Cabinet Scraper I was singing Sophie B. Hawkins’ line, “Damn, I which I was your lover,” over and over in my head? I know where it started… sorry, I was distracted by my four year old, Jane, who apparently was turned down by a boy in class today and she is really sad… back to it… it started when I took my first pass. Shhhhwit, a perfect shaving. “Damn,” the damn of amazement, not the ...

Veritas 1:6 Dovetail Saw Guide Model 05T02.01

I got this wonderful little guide for Christmas and just now had my first opportunity to try it out. It took me a couple of minutes to wrap my head around how it works, but once I did, I was pretty impressed. You set the clamp in one set of grooves for the tails, and then slide it off and set it into a second set of grooves for the pins. I say set of grooves, but that’s somewhat misleading. There are three grooves in all, but the center groove serves double duty and is used in both orie...

Veritas Wooden Plane Kit

Veritas Wooden Plane Kit

12-19-2013 03:04 AM by Woodbridge | 6 comments »

Over the last 12 months, I’ve made a few Krenov style wooden hand planes and also collected and refurbished a number of old Stanley and Record planes. I now have a nice collection of number 3, 4,5,6, and 7 planes, all of them capable of cutting wispy shavings. I am giving a presentation in the new year to the woodworking club I belong to on making wooden hand planes. I noticed a few weeks ago that Lee Valley/Veritas has introduced a Wooden Plane Hardware kit with s Norris style ...

Veritas Cabinet Scraper

I just go this tool today. I love it. It’s a great hand tool. Pulled it out of the box and cleaned the blade and put a slight hook on the scraper and away I went. Very easy to control the amount of camber in the blade. Just a little bit and takes light wispy shavings that curl. Give it more camber and it takes a more aggressive cut. I keep an old cutting board around just for trying tools out on and see how they do. This is an end grain cutting board so it’s pretty tough. This cab...

Lee Valley Veritas Quick Release Face Vise

Lee Valley Veritas Quick Release Face Vise

04-30-2013 03:51 PM by rdwile | 8 comments »

I recently replaced my bench’s front vise with the Lee Valley (Veritas) Quick Release Face Vise which according to my extensive reading is one of the best for this purpose. For me it was a very smooth installation as I could simply bolt it to the underside of the benchtop without much modification. The vise face was lined up on the template so it was flush with the top of my bench and I drilled the holes. The wooden jaw is bubinga with ebony shoulders to add some visual interest, I thin...

Well worth the extra upfront cost!!

I purchased the Veritas Mark II honing guide from my local Woodcraft store (not sure if they all do it this way, but it was kept behind a door at mine, wasn’t with the other honing guides (for good reason). I took it home, and got it out of it’s packaging, and inspected. The thing that I noticed first was the heft. It is well cast, and the brass knobs are beautifully machined. First impression: high quality tool. The instruction manual is a lengthy read, but super well writ...

Veritas DX60 Low Angle Block Plane is Versatile

Veritas DX60 Low Angle Block Plane is Versatile

When you start looking at a hand plane you can tell pretty quickly if it is well made. This one is. The throat opening adjusts easily, and can close up tightly for fine shavings. The depth adjustment, and angle adjustment is combined into one knob, and is easy to work. Once you dial in your setting there are a pair of set screws that hold the side of the blade in alignment. The blade lock knob is larger diameter than my other planes, which makes it easy to hold the blade steady with mini...

Veritas® Jointer/Edger for card scraper

Veritas® Jointer/Edger for card scraper

This is the file holder from Veritas for card scrapers. Works great for putting a new edge on card scrapers after the burr is worn out. Takes only a couple of seconds to file the edge and get it ready to burnish or you can leave it as is after filing for heavy (as heavy as you can get with a card scraper anyway) material removal. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a good jig for their card scrapers.

Extremely Useful Addition To My Bench

Extremely Useful Addition To My Bench

I purchased a set a few months ago, so I figured I’d post a quick review. Hope it helps others decide if these are for them. Initially, I honestly thought I wouldn’t like these. My first impression was that they seemed cool in a gadgety sort of way, but that they might be one of those things that fixes a problem that doesn’t exist. Boy was I wrong! The little plates that go under the holes are really easy to install and readily flip out of the way when needed. The fit of these...
