Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane

Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane

11-18-2014 12:25 AM by Chuck Anstrom | 10 comments »

Earlier this year, I purchased a Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane from Lee Valley. I have one other Veritas plane, a Medium Shoulder Plane. Like the first, the Low Angle Jack Plane is a tool of beauty. Superbly crafted and machined, it is a pleasure to use. Last week, I received a letter informing me of a possible fault in the plane. I checked my plane and the fault did not exist. I find it unique and extraordinary that a firm would provide this level of service—— If it is n...

Even Better With A Few Modifications

Even Better With A Few Modifications

I’ve had one of these for about 2-1/2 years. Typical of Lee Valley / Veritas tools, everything’s great. You can read all about adjustments, available blades, and the rest in the manual from their website. The tool provides excellent results, but does have a learning curve, and there are a couple of things that make it an even better tool. Initially I ended up with an overly aggressive cut. It would dig in and stop, spin around, sometimes feeling like a slot car on a wiggly piece of track ...

Works Well with Only One Negative

Works Well with Only One Negative

I purchased Lee Valley’s new Veritas custom plane when it first became available. After messing around with it for a few days, here are my thoughts. 1) The plane is built well and looks a lot better than their old line of bench planes. It feels nice and heavy and is about the same weight as a Lie-Nielsen (LN) #5. I bought mine with the “medium” traditional tote in the back and the middle-sized knob in the front. This gives it the same feeling in the hand as old Stanley or...

Great Saw for dovetails

Great Saw for dovetails

07-29-2014 12:27 AM by mramseyISU | 4 comments »

I picked this saw up a couple weeks back to try my hand at hand cutting dovetails after losing 4 teeth out of a Japanese style saw on one drawer. I’d read that the Japanese saws aren’t as good on harder woods like white oak which is what I mostly use, wish I would have read that before I bought the thing but other than that it’s a nice saw and I’ll keep it around I think. Back to the review at hand though. I started the process of laying out dovetails on 4 drawers and ...

Veritas T-Slot Router Bit

Veritas T-Slot Router Bit

06-28-2014 01:18 PM by Lumberpunk | 9 comments »

I love this bit, have owned for about a year now and used on several projects. At $22 Canadian I figure I have saved $60 or $70 on buying t-track for my jigs. The bit will cut a slot full depth straight off but I find it best to hog out most of the waste with a 1/4 or 5/16 bit first and then cut the slot. Tend to leave some furry bits on the top of the slot… easily cleaned up with a few strokes with some sand paper. Living way out in the country it also means I can have t-track anytime...

Just figured if post a couple pics of my Vietnamese style hand plane I got from veritas for 62$. It’s 245mm and comes hand tuned with a camber allready on the blade! Made from rosewood I believe and I’m very impressed so far.. Will update once it gets some abuse. Iron sides

Veritas jointer fence

Veritas jointer fence

I recently picked up the veritas jointer fence from lee valley to use with my low angle jack plane to joint some 6/4 walnut for my wifes desk.I am fairly new to hand tools and with that I am not the steadiest when prepping boards edges yet. This fence changed that. I was able to joint the entire 7 foot length of my boards smoothly and nice and square. The instructions for this tool are very clear and explain what to do if your planes wings aren’t square to the sole.Thankfully mine is so t...

Veritas Mk.II Honing Guide

Veritas Mk.II Honing Guide

03-11-2014 02:21 PM by TheWoodenOyster | 21 comments »

Overall, the Veritas MKII leaves something to be desired and is not worth the price. There are three main issues that I found with the system: 1. Not so big of an issue: The time sacrifice it takes to setup is time better spent woodworking. It is isn’t terribly painful to set up, but it does take a few minutes to get going with it. 2. A little bit bigger issue: It is very difficult to get the chisel or plane iron in the jig at 90 degrees perfectly. Even using the equipment that...

Veritas Large Spokeshave Kit

Veritas Large Spokeshave Kit

03-03-2014 05:24 AM by Lumberpunk | 3 comments »

I bought this kits a few months ago and didn’t get time to make the body until recently. As usual with Veritas products I found the packaging to be minimal, which I like. All the parts felt well made right away and the blade was already very flat and sharp, a few minutes on the worksharp brought it up to a nice mirror finish. The instructions are detailed and clear and have a good tool and materials list at the beginning as well as warning you when any operation is crucial to be p...

A goof proof sharpening system

A goof proof sharpening system

02-09-2014 05:54 PM by CharlesA | 9 comments »

I will admit at the beginning that I have never used the scary sharp, the Paul Sellers method, Tormek, or other sharpening systems. A year ago I got my first good set of chisels and started with some vintage Stanley planes. I stopped by my local Woodcraft and asked what they recommended for sharpening, and I picked up this Veritas Mk II and some Japanese water stones. Good: You don’t have to know a lot. There are lots of possible settings for every kind of chisel and plane. It...
