First impression - very well pleased

This Veritas BU LAJ plane is an upgrade from my Stanley sweetheart BU plane. After months of researching pros and cons between LN and LV BU LAJ, I finally made my decision to purchase the LV. My first impression – very well pleased, no regrets. During my research, I wanted to see actual and latest pictures of both items but google search images seem to look the same. So, now that I have the item, I took pictures in different angles to see every inch of it. See my flickr Hand Plane albu...

Works like a charm

Works like a charm

I’m not a plane fanatic like some, and in fact this is my first. I was having trouble controlling the dado depths on plywood sheets because of bowage and remembered seeing someone, somewhere using one of these things.Anyway, I used it on my last project and it made a world of difference. The adjustment wanders a bit, and by a bit I mean something like .005”-.01” on the depth, which is probably due to how I’m measuring it, but once it’s dialed in it works really we...

Veritas Bar Guage Beautiful

Veritas Bar Guage Beautiful

I must say this measuring device is expensive, but well worth it. Works exactly as advertised. Straight out of the box, measured the inside of a box for the bottom rabbet. Transferred the measured rods to the table saw and cut my stock. It fit perfectly, not even an ants hair of a gap. I am sure I will make a box for it, to keep it all together….lol. If you are looking at purchasing, rest assured this is a quality tool that will last a very long time functioning exactly the w...

Veritas Cabinet Scraper

Veritas Cabinet Scraper

For Christmas I received the Veritas Cabinet Scraper w/EX blade. I really wanted a cab scraber because I hear they were amazing tools and I heard it was hard to beat the price of the Veritas Not to mentioned it was slightly bigger than the No 80 and had a thicker blade. Well let me tell you Veritas didn’t disappoint. out of the box the fit and finish was excellent, the sole was flat and the blade was ready to take a decent shaving. I used the stock blade for a cpl of hrs with no prob...

I’ll make this succinct. The Good: [1] Once you set it up a few times, it gets pretty quick and repeatable. I do think the overall “system” is a great concept.[2] I did not have any issues with my irons or chisels sliding around in the guide. It seems reliable in this respect.[3] Veritas customer support has been one of the best customer support experiences I have EVER had – this is really the only reason I have not given this guide 0 stars. The Bad (i.e.,...

Veritas Mark II Narrow-Blade Honing Guide

View on YouTube A quick review of the Veritas Mark II Narrow-Blade Honing Guide. For years I’ve used the regular Mark II Honing Guide and recently purchased the Narrow Blade Guide. I found the new clamping guide is perfect for using with chisels. Lee Valley Veritas 'lipped' HSS Wood Drill Bits

Lee Valley Veritas 'lipped' HSS Wood Drill Bits

I selected three of these – the two-hundred dollars for a complete set in 64’s was out of my range. As other reviewers noted, they are SHARP. Thus, be careful removing the plastic covering they ship with – I cut myself pulling it off the half-inch bit. As well, if you purchase individual bits – as I did – have a case ready fr them or plan on building one to protect them. Don’t use them in wood where nails may be present – as I did – for once ...

Finally, I can make dowels

Finally, I can make dowels

03-06-2015 04:04 AM by LJackson | 9 comments »

I have been trying to make my own device for making dowels, following some ideas I picked up on YouTube. These attempts have not gone over very well (read, epic fail). So, I had given up and instead purchased this fine product. To be thorough, I purchased the master set, which includes all of the inserts needed to create dowels from 1/4” to 1” in 1/16” increments. There are quite a bit of steps involved in setting it up for a particular size, and several trials are necess...

disappointed in Veritas

My son presented with me with a Veritas low angle spokeshave for Christmas. We were going to use it for shaping an oak axe handle we had cut out. I initially tested it on Christmas day using some pine and cherry scraps around the shop. Worked great on this fairly soft wood. However when we later tried to shape the oak handle the problems began. The blade is held in place by two bolt heads which contact side bevels on the blade. The instructions for the shave say you need to sand the back of ...
