Veritas Low-Angle Jack disappointment :(

Veritas Low-Angle Jack disappointment :(

01-31-2013 01:22 AM by Willeh | 58 comments »

I’ve been looking for a new jack plane to replace the turn of the century Stanley 5 1/2 that i’ve been working with for a long while (For sale btw, if anyone is interested).. Finally decided on the Veritas Low Angle Jack.. Basically the options were the LN 62, the Veritas Low-angle jack, a LN #5 or a wood river #5. I didn’t love the price of the LN #5 and, while i’m happy with my other wood river, I wanted to try one of the low-angle jacks since so many people rave ...

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

Veritas PM-V11 Bench Chisel really delivers!!

First off, I will not profess to be an expert on chisels, i do not have a toolchest full of Lie-Nielsens for which to compare, so I will give you an honest opinion based on what i do know. Not wildly impressed by the packaging, however, it is utilitarian, and a decent storage box for the chisel until it finds a new home in the tool cabinet that i’m working on. The chisel comes with a wax protector on the sharp end, the metal was all coated in a light coat of oil that was easily remov...

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

Hi Folks, As promised, a quick tour of the Veritas Mk.II Sharpening System. In the video I seem to use back bevel and micro bevel interchangeably. This is a mistake and is due to doing these videos at 1am when I should be ”sawing logs,” in bed. However, here it is… Cheers!

Lee Valley Veritas Quick Release Face Vise

Lee Valley Veritas Quick Release Face Vise

04-30-2013 03:51 PM by rdwile | 8 comments »

I recently replaced my bench’s front vise with the Lee Valley (Veritas) Quick Release Face Vise which according to my extensive reading is one of the best for this purpose. For me it was a very smooth installation as I could simply bolt it to the underside of the benchtop without much modification. The vise face was lined up on the template so it was flush with the top of my bench and I drilled the holes. The wooden jaw is bubinga with ebony shoulders to add some visual interest, I thin...

Edge trimming plane

Edge trimming plane

12-24-2010 09:13 AM by gko | 13 comments »

On a recent trip to Vancouver, BC I picked up several planes which included the Veritas Skewed Edge Trimming Plane. There is a right and left hand version but if the boards two sides are decently flat you can just change the side the fence goes on so you can plane with the grain. Let me get to the bad first. The fence on the plane was not exactly 90 degrees but closer to about 91.5. When I planed two boards and matched them there was a crack of about 3 degrees. I could change the angle...

Veritas 38" Aluminum Straightedge

Veritas 38" Aluminum Straightedge

07-21-2011 05:17 AM by TheGman | 9 comments »

I just purchased the VERITAS 38” Aluminum Straightedge from Lee Valley. The straightedge was shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube that I’ll continue to use as a place to store the straightedge to prevent any damage in the shop. I had a very good first impression once I removed the straightedge from the packaging. It has a very nice finish, which looks great and feels nice in your hand. Its contour makes it very easy to grip and handle. To check the straightness of the straight...

I’ll make this succinct. The Good: [1] Once you set it up a few times, it gets pretty quick and repeatable. I do think the overall “system” is a great concept.[2] I did not have any issues with my irons or chisels sliding around in the guide. It seems reliable in this respect.[3] Veritas customer support has been one of the best customer support experiences I have EVER had – this is really the only reason I have not given this guide 0 stars. The Bad (i.e.,...

Veritas Bevel Up Jointer Plane

Veritas Bevel Up Jointer Plane

11-21-2012 03:10 PM by jasondain | 8 comments »

Over the past month or so, I have been working on a Benchcrafted Split Top Roubo workbench (more on that in later posts). At this point, I’m in the home stretch flattening the top and I had bought this plane in anticipation of using it for flattening the top of the bench once it was ready. I have built other projects in the past where I could have used this but used my Bevel-up smoother for the task instead (I know, not technically for the purpose but it worked fine). I spent a few h...
