All around great performer and then some

All around great performer and then some

I got this when it first came out a year or so ago as I wanted something that could handle rabbets and joinery’s edges and this one seemed like a jack of all trades when it comes to that. It is no replacement for a shoulder plane, but I figured I’d use it mostly as a block plane which will also allow me to address some edges, rabbets etc. The plane itself is a beautiful designed product and the materials and machining is superb – a real gem. it is very hefty and feels sol...

Super Spokeshaves

Hello. I recently bought the Flat and Round Veritas Spokeshaves. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=49142&cat=1,50230&ap=1 Each sell for $95.00 Cdn and come with the shave, two shims and instructions. Available separately is a handle kit which allows you to make custom handles. Flat Spokeshave First ImpressionsMy first impressions opening the box and pulling out the shave was the weight of the tool. It has substantially more heft than my old Stanley #51. This ...

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

1983 days ago by mot | 16 comments »

Hi Folks, As promised, a quick tour of the Veritas Mk.II Sharpening System. In the video I seem to use back bevel and micro bevel interchangeably. This is a mistake and is due to doing these videos at 1am when I should be ”sawing logs,” in bed. However, here it is… Cheers!

Sweet Jig

Sweet Jig

Though i thought it was a little expensive when I bought it from woodcrafters I think this honing jig is awesome. I use the scary sharp system and it works great for it. the best part about this jig is that the guide you attach let’s you set a consistent square bevel every time. when you try it you’ll be surprised how far some of your chisels have gotten from spec. I found a few things about the jig confusing (the manual wasn’t very clear) so i’ll give you guys some...

Average Marking Gauge

Average Marking Gauge

I bought this marking gauge, because I thought it was better deal than the Tite-Mark. I was really disappointed with the the Micro-Adjustment on the Veritas. It requires you to use both hands to adjust the gauge. The instructions even tell you that you have to use both hands. Once adjusted the gauge works well and is accurate. If you want to buy Veritas, I suggest buying their standard marking gauge and save a few more bucks.

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane

1973 days ago by TheGravedigger | 13 comments »

Every now and then you stumble upon a tool that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it. For me, that was the shoulder plane. My present workbench base project was going to require 28 large mortise and tenon joints, and practice joints showed me that fitting was going to be difficult. I had tried a combination of block plane and chisel to clean up the tenon cheeks and shoulders, but the intersection of the shoulder and cheek kept causing me problems. The shoulder plane seemed like the...

Believe the Hype...

Believe the Hype...

Ok, I took the plunge, my two previous block planes were annoying me. On the Irwin 60 1/2 low angle, the blade just kept moving no matter what I did,and the adjustable throat was always out of square since I got it. The Stanley 9 1/2 was Ok but the throat is huge and it can tear out even a gentle wave in the grain, also fairly pointless on end grain. I read all sorts of block plane tests online and in magazines, the conclusion seemed to be that the Veritas or Lie Nielsen planes were both v...

Veritas DX60 Low Angle Block Plane is Versatile

Veritas DX60 Low Angle Block Plane is Versatile

When you start looking at a hand plane you can tell pretty quickly if it is well made. This one is. The throat opening adjusts easily, and can close up tightly for fine shavings. The depth adjustment, and angle adjustment is combined into one knob, and is easy to work. Once you dial in your setting there are a pair of set screws that hold the side of the blade in alignment. The blade lock knob is larger diameter than my other planes, which makes it easy to hold the blade steady with mini...

My New 'Favorite Plane'

My New 'Favorite Plane'

1187 days ago by TheDane | 5 comments »

I have a new favorite plane. OK … every one of my planes has been my favorite at one time or another, but my new Veritas Apron Plane is now at the top of my list. A couple of technical details. The Veritas Apron Plane is a small, low-angle block plane that weighs in at about 14 ounces (much lighter than my Stanley 60 1/2). It is 5-1/2” long and 1-3/4” wide, and is made of ductile cast iron. I ordered mine with an A2 blade. The bed is set at 12-degrees, and the Norris-styl...
