Veritas Cornering tool

Veritas Cornering tool

I have had this tool for a few years. I use it quit a bit. I never seem to like the feel of it, just me I guess. It works very well if I keep my wits about myself. If I don’t, I end up cutting into the grain opening a big sliver on the edge I am trying to round over. The two tools have 4 radius options, 1/16, 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4. I usually opt for one of the smaller ones. Tonight I was breaking the edge on a pine shelf board. It does a good job very quickly and saves setting up th...

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

Hi Folks, As promised, a quick tour of the Veritas Mk.II Sharpening System. In the video I seem to use back bevel and micro bevel interchangeably. This is a mistake and is due to doing these videos at 1am when I should be ”sawing logs,” in bed. However, here it is… Cheers!

Nothing plain about this plane!

Nothing plain about this plane!

This is my 1000th post so I thought I should make it special; so I will write about a great plane my great wife gave me for my birthday (its actually on Sunday but we were in Winnipeg visiting my brother and his wife so we had an impromptu birthday party there). Any way this is of course a Lee Valley tool and you can go to their web page for dimensions etc. I’ll just write about my impression of the tool. First off is the heft of the tool, its got a good solid feel to it and the tote...

Veritas dovetail saw (14 TPI rip)

Veritas dovetail saw (14 TPI rip)

09-29-2012 07:39 AM by Purrmaster | 16 comments »

I’ve had this saw for a few months now. I picked it up at Woodcraft after bashing my head against the wall with some other saws that were dubbed dovetail saws. The saw I am talking about specifically is the 14 teeth per inch saw with a rip cutting profile. The bottom line is: This is a great saw. It cuts smoothly and cleanly. And quickly. It’s easier to saw to a line with this saw than any other saw I’ve used. The teeth are sharp and set correctly. It’s a ...

Great plane, but uncomfortable tote

Great plane, but uncomfortable tote

I have had this plane for about 4 months. I originally bought it because I wanted a premium jointer plane, but the other ones (from LN) were much more expensive. Actually, when I bought this, I did not know that LN also made bevel up planes. On this plane, I find the adjuster a little hard to use. The adjuster controls both the lateral position, as well as the depth, but when I adjust the depth, sometimes, I’ll accidentally change the lateral position. It’s not too bad thou...

Veritas Precision Square

Veritas Precision Square

There are only three things I carry in a working or playing day with wood. A Starrett Tru-Lok 1/2” tape measure with my little one’s reminder ( a really great tape), a bunch of different hardness pencils and Lee Valley’s small square. The square is a simply marvelous tool to own, I’ve had mine for years and years and could not imagine working without it. Weighing nothing (you will never feel it in your pocket and if you drop it on the floor a hundred times it won&...

Veritas Micro-Adjust Wheel Marking GaugeYes I have seen that there are already a review this tool! But!!! I do not all agree in the judgment: I think it’s a excellent marking tool, I think it’s so delicate, and well made, that it makes any LJ want to touch it!It’s precise. It’s cutting a sharp spur. Its a pleasure to hold in your hand. What I do agree, are that the micro adjustment are not super useful, but I actually used it to fine tune the other day for my do...

Veritas Router Plane

I bought this a while ago but have been too busy to sit down and use it. For my last project I had to make a couple of grooves for a shelf and decided that this was a good time to give this a try. To start, I marked out where I wanted the groove to be on a piece of scrap, cut the marks a little deeper with a bench chisel to establish the groove and reduce the possible tear out before it happened. Using the adjustment, I took very little off on each pass. This thing worked like a dream. ...

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

There are things you can do with a scraper that would defeat even the finest of hand planes. The micro geometry of their cut produces a Type II shaving, yielding a perfect surface even going fully against interlocked grain or over knots. I use a variety of scrapers and for spot work nothing beats a card type or even an ordinary paint scraper. One problem with these types is that they will follow any undulations on the existing surface as they have no registration (sole). For larger wor...
