Benjamin's Best Bowl Gouges

Benjamin's Best Bowl Gouges

I have the 3/8 and 1/2 inch gouges from Penn State. As of the current catalog (got it today), they are $15.95 and $19.95. I am a self taught turner (about 5yrs experience), so my only comparison in edge retention is from a cheapo Harbor Freight set and an older Buck Brothers set. The BB gouges hold an edge as long or longer than any of these tools, which makes them about average for HSS. I have a high carbon scraper I made myself which doesn’t hold an edge very long at all, for co...

Benjamin's best carbide pen turning chisels

I bought these hoping they would make turning acrylic blanks easier since they should be sharper than I can make my old Crafstman turning chisels. YES THEY ARE! Turning acrylic blanks is a breeze with these carbide chisels. They worked so well that I use them on wood blanks too. For the most part these are decent chisels, hold an edge well, and are beefy enough to prevent chatter.I knocked off one star due to the length of the chisel as a whole. I was expecting them to be a bit longer, They will suffice for work on my midi-lathe, but if you are getting into larger pieces I could foresee them being a bit of a hindrance. The chisels came with a decent g...

With our wood turning program growing here at the shop, we were able to get new equipment, and part of that were two sets of the 8 piece Benjamin’s Best HSS lathe chisels from PSI ($69.95). I had never heard of Benjamin’s Best before I started pen turning and looking through the PSI catalog. So when I saw a 8 piece set of HSS tools for $70 I was skeptical of the quality. When they arrived I inspected them and they all needed to be re-ground, not a big deal since we also got a n...
