Great saw, but I would expect more from the price

Great saw, but I would expect more from the price

Alright so let me start off by saying that I got this saw for free hardly used so for me I couldn’t be happier. If I were to pay the $1200 price tag, I might think twice. I have had this saw for about 2 years and have thrown everything at it including re-sawing 12” ash logs. The saw handled it fine. The bearing guides are nice along with the extended table and carter quick release. There are also multiple features that I do not like about this saw. One is the fence. The fence is ...

(New) PM2700 for sale

(New) PM2700 for sale

The good:Digital readout is a wonderful feature if you want to stack cutters on the spindle. However, you have to keep an eye on it because mine will creep even with the handwheel lock tightened. The bad:THE SHAPERat first glance I was excited to get this out of the crate and assembled because the fence looked so nice with all of the adjustment features. I was very very disappointed with this fence. it moves all over the place and by all over the place I mean the wings flex over an 1/8...

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

04-04-2012 02:12 PM by Jon Spelbring | 12 comments »

I bought this used, and having used it for the past couple of months, I thought I’d post a review. For background, my first lathe was a Jet Mini. I turned on that for about a year, then wanted to do larger work, so I upgraded to a Nova DVR. Both of these are excellent lathes. I have become much more serious about turning, and I’m moving toward larger hollow forms, and large platters/bowls. When I decided to upgrade (again), I researched quite a few large lathes – Robust...

Powermatic 54A 6” Jointer

Powermatic 54A 6” Jointer

Jointer Overview: I decided to purchase a jointer for my home workshop. I did a LOT of online research and talked to as many local folks as I could trying to make sure I made the best purchase. I considered the value of Gizzly, the somewhat less expensive Jet models available, looked for quality OLD jointers to restore, plus a dozen more possibilities. I wanted an 8” model but couldn’t quite swing it. In the end it came down to a four-day 15% off sale on Jet and Powermatic at my local Wood...

I know this is already listed under the tablesaw reviews but the previous ‘review’ wasn’t really a review. I’ll do my best to give you my thoughts on this. This review is from a perspective of ‘once the machine is put together’. Complaints are at the end. Power – SUPERB! Everything just melts as it goes through this thing (if you know what I mean). I came from a Ridgid TS2400 (I think that was the number). Granted – this isn’t a...

Really not much to say other then excellent. After using the saw all day i keep asking my self why i waited so long. Assembly was simple just took my time and rechecked everything as i went. Only downside during assembly was i had to run out and get a tap for rear fence rail there was a ton of paint in the threads . Over all it took me about 4hours to put together with a helper. Once i got it dialed in I put it right to work minus one hicup. (see my freud fussion review) We ran a total of...

The Monster

The Monster

Needing to plane more than 13” boards and deliver better quality, I’ve bought this planer. I have to say that is a real ” MONSTER ”. I putted through a 1 foot x 1” x 3’ Jatoba board and planed down to 3/4”, with only a 1/4 of the noise my 13” Rigid planer would make. I got magnificent results and I’ll be doing the wider boards this week. If you are on the look for a wider capacity planer, consider checking these reviews every week ‘c...

Powermatic PM1800 18" Bandsaw

Powermatic PM1800 18" Bandsaw

11-19-2009 06:45 AM by RobWoodCutter | 10 comments »

Apoligies for the long post but here goes. History: About a 1-1/2 year ago I picked up a Steel City 18” bandsaw from the local Woodcraft and about a year ago also picked up a Powermatic 14” bandsaw. The intent was to use the SC as a resaw machine and the PM for the balance of the tasks. Have been happy with both of them. I had been stocking up on rough saw boards, many wider than the SC could resaw. So I started looking around and reading everything I could find on the web o...

Yet another Powermatic review, close up.

Yet another Powermatic review, close up.

As I stated in another review, I spent well over a month going back and forth between the Powermatic PWBS-14CS, with riser, and the Grizzly G0513X2. The differences are stark. The Grizz uses a 131.5” blade, the Powermatic uses a 105”. (More steel, more teeth, longer wear.)The Grizz is a 2HP, 2 speed model, the Powermatic is a one speed, 1.5HP model. The Powermatic comes in around 225 lbs. The Grizzly comes in at about 390 lbs.The Grizz table is 23 5/8 X 17 1/4”, the Powerm...

Frustrating... Great customer service!

Frustrating... Great customer service!

OK, for starters I’m not much of an internet guy, Id much rather be in the shop. That said I am so disappointed with this saw that it has driven me to this. So, after getting the saw home and starting to put it together I noticed a metal bur along the cast iron extension wings, where it joins with the main saw body. It was about 1/32 – 1/64 high the entire length of both extension wings. Not much of a big deal, was able to take care of it, but I started to think humm… After gettin...
