Pretty nice plane, but not as refined as the premium planes

Pretty nice plane, but not as refined as the premium planes

When I first bought this plane, I was pretty impressed with it. I think it looks nice, and it’s built very well. Out of the box, the blade was not sharp at all. The back was pretty flat, and it didn’t take long to flatten the back and hone the bevel (probably 15 minutes on my oilstones). I checked to see if the sides were square, but they were slightly off. I also checked to see if the sole was flat, but it was slightly concave. But most importantly, how did it work? ...

Wood River HVLP Gravity Feed Spray Gun

Wood River HVLP Gravity Feed Spray Gun

This is a great gun. If you have never tried a gravity feed HVLP you are in for a treat. You might actually enjoy finishing your projects! Exact same gun as the Porter Cable PSH1, except no air regulator. Just use the regulator on your compressor. Beautiful finish with shellac or lacquer. I even spray stain with it on large jobs. This was $25 on sale, but I think regular price is only $35. It comes with a 1.4 mm tip which is good for lacquer and shellac. They sell an inexpensive 2 mm...

Respectable starter set

Respectable starter set

Purchased this set about a year ago to get me started woodworking. The set is currently on clearance for $76 at Woodcraft. I realize that these are not a set of Lie Nielsens, Ashley Iles, or vintage 750’s. Therefore, my expectations were guarded. They lived up to my expectations but they certainly did NOT exceed them. Now, I do not have any significant experience with any other chisels except a couple a Stanley’s that I got from Lowe’s in the distant past. They come on...

Wood River Side Rabbet Plane I finally got my Wood River Side Rabbet Plane after ordering it about 2 months ago. It’s main job is to clean up the sides of rebates and grooves. It has two blades that can be set independently. They can be used left or right handed and can be used in either direction of the grain. There is a nose or toe to put pressure on the wood to give you finer shavings but it is a bit too far from the blade. The nose can be taken off so you can plane all the way to ...

Wood River V3 low angle block plane.

Wood River V3 low angle block plane.

Last Saturday I was at my local Woodcraft store. They had a 10% store wide discount. Well I was looking at their new wood River block planes. So for $80.99 plus tax, I bought the low angle version. It is very well made. The design is based on the Stanley #65. The bed is nicely machined so the plane iron fits very well. The plane iron is .118” thick. This gives a very nice finish. The iron on my old Stanley 60 ½ is 0nly .079” The iron only needed a bit of polishing, and a touch up with a ...

These should work as advertised

These should work as advertised

Just so you know, this is the first and only time I’ve ever used a Forstner bit. I’m working on a toy airplane project and believe I’ll have a need for these (I did in my first toy airplane – for the cockpit). Woodcraft has this set on sale right now for $12.49 (through 4/2/2011) so how can you go wrong? These bits come in a nice wood case. They are stamped with their size, “China”, and the max RPM on each bit. I made a couple of test cuts with the...

A step up from my no-name chisels

A step up from my no-name chisels

I know next to nothing about chisels but I’ve been trying to use them a bit. I’ve got some cheap set, probably from Home Depot, with nicks in them that I work around. I’d like to learn how to sharpen them but haven’t started down that path yet. I’ve read mixed reviews about these chisels but something inside me said to get them so I did. They came covered in some kind of oil that I removed with mineral spirits (please tell me if I’ve already ruined th...

Cutting a Square Hole is so much easier.

Cutting a Square Hole is so much easier.

Up until now my chosen method for cutting mortises has been a router and I’ve become very tired of having to spend a good amount of time square up each one with a chisel. I bought this after seeing on Woodcraft’s site that it was on sale for $249.00 until the end of the month. This looks very similar to the Steel City, it might infact be the same just different branding. The unit comes in roughly 2’X2’X2’ box and has 2 styrofoam trays, it weighs about 90 pou...

Wood River #6 V3 (Fore Plane)

Wood River #6 V3 (Fore Plane)

So, I got home. Cleaned the oil off of the plane and checked it out. Very impressed. Granted I am moving up from a Old Miller Falls plane, Impressed none the less. The fit and finish of this plane is very nice. The handles are super comfortable. Pushing it along the wood just feels right and is effortless. Right out of the box the blade was really sharp. I achieved shavings no problem. The back was very flat and needed minor working. Actually while working the back it was actually hard ...

Wood River # 6

Wood River # 6

I used this plane for the first time today and I was very impressed. It is a big step up from the other planes I have been using. It has good heft to it and all of the parts were machined nice and didn’t requiure any filing. The sole was dead flat and the iron was thick and the back flat. I spent 5 minutes honing the iron to an 8000 grit water stone and took fine shavings in maple, walnut and cherry. I have never used a Lie-neilsen, Clifton orVeritas but with the way this performed IR...
