Great budget square - worth 5 stars at the price

Great budget square - worth 5 stars at the price

236 days ago by paxorion | 5 comments »

For the past few months, I have been looking for a replacement to an inexpensive contractor’s combination square (a freebie I got from my in-law’s hardware store during a trip many years ago). I had the opportunity to use a Starrett at my guild shop, and convinced myself I needed a replacement. To ensure I could focus my search, I came up with 4 criteria: – A solid cast head – Etched measurements that go up to at least 1/64 intervals – A more palatable price...

Only $60 but that was $60 down the drain.

Only $60 but that was $60 down the drain.

It’s cheap (cheap as in poorly made and from bad materials). It took me an hour of adjusting and more adjusting to get an ALMOST decent half blind dovetail out of this piece of _! Clamping the pieces in place is time consuming and requires way too many turns to hold the wood securely in place (which also means way too many turns to release the piece after routing it). Also, the screws that hold the template in place is positioned in a way that will prevent clamping thinner pieces of ...

Exceptionally smooth countersinks

Exceptionally smooth countersinks

1658 days ago by sry | 9 comments »

Woodcraft product page I had always heard that this style produces a very smooth cut, so I decided to pick some up when I was at Woodcraft. I bought the #6, #8, and #10. It really is amazing how smoothly and effortlessly they cut. The second picture I uploaded shows just how smooth these things cut (#10 is shown, but the results are typical). On the far left is the Wood River single flute countersink, middle is one from HD (can’t remember the brand), and right is from a Ryobi c...

Wood River Parallel Clamps

Wood River Parallel Clamps

Picked up a couple of these clamps with the sale that Woodcraft is having. I have always had Harbor Freight and Jorgensen F style clamps. I knew that I was going to need some clamping power with a project that I am working on and these turned out perfect. I bought the 40” model and they are great. Quality is excellent. I have used them a few times since I got them three days ago. They are able to hold as much pressure as I am able to give them. The cam handle is a little tricky...

Great Light, many uses.

Great Light, many uses.

This is really a great little light, comes with a wall power adapter, and runs off ‘AAA’ batteries. I keep it on one of my band saws with the light beam focused right at the blade and it works very well, the magnet holds VERY strong. When I want to use it else where such as on my mortising machine, I simply unplug it and use the battery power for that bit of time. I caught it on sale but I feel its well worth the regular price of $30. It also comes with a clamp on mounting pla...

Affordable Mobile Base

Affordable Mobile Base

1521 days ago by johnnymo | 6 comments »

I have a 12ft x 14ft shop and needed a mobile base for my tablesaw. I purchased a mobile base for my jointer/planer a few months back that I’m not happy with so I decided to try this one out from Wood River. The instructions were pretty easy to follow and it didn’t take long to get it assembled. The base rolls great around the shop and the metal cam levers are very easy to engage and disengage with your foot. A word of caution: Be careful when disengaging the wheels when you hav...

Ok for the money.

Ok for the money.

Picked up this set at Woodcraft for about $25.00. I have used tapered bits in the past and really liked to have them to use as a quick way to drill a pilot and countersink in one step. The case is great, the bits are sharp and straight but one of the countersinks spun on the bit shaft despite my tightening of the set screws. It’s a cheap set compared to the $70.00 and $90.00 sets right beside it in the store and is better than a harbor freight job.

What a difference !

What a difference !

Last week I received by mail the set of three Footprint planes I bought from Sears on the Internet. I bought them because the price was right and it seemed to be a good value. IN the last month or so I spent countless hour son the Internet reading about hand planes; what the different planes are and what are their respective use, how to tune and how to use them. Of course I have used hand planes before but I really never paid attention to them, I just used them. Lately I found out that they a...

Pretty nice plane, but not as refined as the premium planes

Pretty nice plane, but not as refined as the premium planes

985 days ago by funchuck | 9 comments »

When I first bought this plane, I was pretty impressed with it. I think it looks nice, and it’s built very well. Out of the box, the blade was not sharp at all. The back was pretty flat, and it didn’t take long to flatten the back and hone the bevel (probably 15 minutes on my oilstones). I checked to see if the sides were square, but they were slightly off. I also checked to see if the sole was flat, but it was slightly concave. But most importantly, how did it work? ...

Wood River # 6

Wood River # 6

I used this plane for the first time today and I was very impressed. It is a big step up from the other planes I have been using. It has good heft to it and all of the parts were machined nice and didn’t requiure any filing. The sole was dead flat and the iron was thick and the back flat. I spent 5 minutes honing the iron to an 8000 grit water stone and took fine shavings in maple, walnut and cherry. I have never used a Lie-neilsen, Clifton orVeritas but with the way this performed IR...
