Pretty pleased with this plane

Pretty pleased with this plane

My daughters gave me a Woodcraft gift certificate for my birthday. I don’t have a low angle jack plane which I have always wanted. I did the usual research and decided that I probably will go with LN or LV version in the future. I have the Woodriver 4 1/2 which I really like and after reading the reviews here and elsewhere, I decided to go for the Woodriver 5 1/2. I was very pleased with the fit and finish, everything flat and square, etc. The blade is quite hefty and just needed a lit...

So I decided to expand my hand tool collection. Did some research and settled on wood river for my first major hand tool investment. I am really pleased with the quality and performance of this tool. For more information on this line of planes, reference rob cosman via YouTube. Check out my initial reaction when opening this beautiful plane. https://youtu.be/xwCHgyJoIkA

Exactly What I Needed

Exactly What I Needed

This set of silicone chisel tips/guards is exactly what I’ve been looking for since I started using chisels for serious woodworking. They are rugged and feel like they will survive quite a bit of use, fit standard flat chisels nicely, and are bright red so they don’t disappear in a pile of shavings. There are 10 of these in the set, about $10 or so. Shown here installed on a few of my chisels, at $10.00 for the set, not cheap, but sure helps keep the cutting edges from bangi...

Wood River #62 low angle Jack Plane

Wood River #62 low angle Jack Plane

I’ve wanted a bevel up jack plane for a while. When Wood River brought out their #62, I agonized over paying extra for the lee valley. I have a V3, #4, #5, and a low angle block plane that I’m very happy with. I had a discount coupon so I bought the wood river #62. Out of the box, it was a beauty. The sole was flat, and the sides were dead on square. I bought an extra 25 degree blade, and the 40 degree blade. I polished, and sharpened the blades. I sharpened the 40, and one of the 25’s with a...

Wait for a sale. Not worth full price IMO.

Just bough one of these from Rockler.com on sale for $35 and free shipping. Mine is a Port-A-Mate PM1000, but is IDENTICAL to the Wood River unit pictured in another review. I picked one up for my jointer (21” x 42” base size) and am very satisfied with the quality and function based on the cost. They are still on sale, and I plan on buying two more for the same price. If I had paid $60, I would expect a little more. I believe I would build my own rather than pay full price.

Exceptional performance at a reasonable price

Exceptional performance at a reasonable price

I purchased the medium WoodRiver shoulder plane in December; it was 20% off and then I had an additional $10 coupon. Before tax; $110. This deal was too good to pass up. After a few minutes on a 4000 grit water stone the blade was razor sharp. The body was perfectly square and the blade adjustment works very smoothly. I have never used a Veritas or Lie Nielson should plane and cannot compare the WoodRiver plane to the others. I am very pleased with the WoodRiver shoulder plane and would r...

Have I mentioned I have the best wife in the world! Found this under the Xmas treel. What a beauty, feels good in the hand, nice heft to it. Will have to research how to prep it for use and the sharpening angle etc.. More review will be added later, but see no reason not to do 5 stars. I pulled it apart and put it ack together and no pieces were broken/cracked etc. Hmm, I’ll have to cut some dado’s and tennons so I can use it. LOL! Like i need an excuse.

Great budget square - worth 5 stars at the price

Great budget square - worth 5 stars at the price

For the past few months, I have been looking for a replacement to an inexpensive contractor’s combination square (a freebie I got from my in-law’s hardware store during a trip many years ago). I had the opportunity to use a Starrett at my guild shop, and convinced myself I needed a replacement. To ensure I could focus my search, I came up with 4 criteria: – A solid cast head – Etched measurements that go up to at least 1/64 intervals – A more palatable price...

First Impressions Review of Wood River Butt Chisels

First Impressions Review of Wood River Butt Chisels

First Impressions Review of Wood River Butt Chisels i received these for Christmas this year. I’ve been eyeing them for a while, mostly due to the beautiful Bubinga handles that fit so wonderfully in the palm and the on-sale price of $29.99. This is just a short review based on the initial set up and a few paring and chopping exercises. The set is four chisels in 1 inch, ¾ inch, ½ inch and ¼ inch. Overall fit and finish is quite good for an economy set of chisels. It took quite a bit ...

A good chisel for 9$ each

A good chisel for 9$ each

This is my first set of chisels that are not meant to be smashed with a sledge hammer. I bought these for a few reasons: 1 – they were on sale from 89.99 to 53.992 – The Bubinga handles are REALLY well done. Both to look at and they are really comfortable to hold3 – (According to the woodcraft guy) US Steel and assembled in the US, although the box comes from China. 4 – It had every size I needed5 – Hardened to RC-59 (same as Narex) I was originally going t...
